Post-Academy: USS VICTORY

Lael aboard the USS Victory (2392).

Upon graduating on Stardate 239202, Lael was assigned as an Engineering Officer aboard the USS Victory and arrived aboard just after the ship had been severely damaged by the events at Luxis II. Her first tasks as a green ensign were focused on repairing the damage to the ship.

Before the repairs could be completed, Captain Nugra and the crew were given new orders that resulted in them temporarily being assigned to the USS Achilles with the mission of hunting down a missing vial of Plasmodium-falciparum Romulopesti (PFR, or Skyfire Virus) in conjunction with the Romulan Republic. However, the mission didn't go as planned and while chasing a young woman her colleague, Ensign Janel Tarna suspected of having the missing vial, both she and Tarna were captured and tortured by an organization called Sicarius. The two were eventually rescued, but not before both received severe injuries with Tarna's being life threatening. After retrieving the vial, they returned to the Achilles for treatment and counseling.

After a well-earned shoreleave, the crew of the Victory returned to their ship. Once out of dry dock, they encountered Captain Harrington James of the SS Lady Adventure who shared information about the USS Arrow, a ship that had been lost in the 23rd century. While the away team was aboard the lost ship investigating, the Victory encountered a group of hostile Tholians who demanded the Victory leave their space, forcing the crew to work quickly to retrieve the stranded away team. The Tholians attacked with webs and caused radiation leaks on decks 5-7. Lael was a part of the team that evacuated those decks, first getting sick from the radiation and then seizing from an allergy to the inoculation. She was treated in Sickbay and made a full recovery.

Post-Academy: USS GORKON

Lael aboard the USS Gorkon (2392).

Following the decommissioning of the Victory on Stardate 239207.17, Lael transferred to the USS Gorkon. While adjusting to life aboard her new ship assignment, Lael experienced lingering nightmares from the Tholian incident and went to Sickbay, where she met Doctor Jansen Orrey, who she felt an instant attraction to.

Shoreleave soon wrapped up and the Gorkon crew responded to a distress call from the USS Tharsis, which was caught in a gravity well. Lael beamed over with a team led by Commander Chen in an attempt to free the trapped ship and save the crew. Little did the away teams know a flying creature had accidentally been set loose that bit the crew, causing them to hallucinate and become violent. While trying to escape those hunting them, Commander Chen was rendered unconscious by a phaser blast, forcing the remaining members of the team to carry him to safety. While the away teams and some of the Tharsis crew were safely retrieved, the Tharsis and all remaining hands were lost when the gravity well tore the ship apart.

Following the Tharsis mission, the crew was prepared for the awards dinner, a masquerade theme set on Astrofori One's Holodeck 666 in a creepy Victorian mansion. But they soon found themselves in the midst of a very real murder mystery when the body of the deceased Cardassian envoy, Kotan Jara, was discovered in the library and attempts to shut down the program led them to realize they were trapped in the simulation. They began their search for clues and the culprit, leading them to a creepy basement with remnants of what they suspected to be blood. Lael and Jansen were then separated from the group when Jansen and found themselves in an underground labyrinth, searching for a way back to their team. As they went, they found evidence that someone had been living there and that the holodeck systems were failing. At last, they escaped and rejoined their team only to find that Commander Walter Brunsig had been shot by a bullet meant for Captain Reynolds. When they moved him back to the mansion, they found Commander Vess wounded as well. Once they had successfully found a way to deactivate the program, both men were beamed to Sickbay for further treatment.

After the mission, while being treated in Sickbay, Lael asked after Brunsig. Once she was cleared, she returned to her quarters to catch up with her friends and her brother. In pain and scared, Lael finally confessed to Jansen about the complications with her spinal injury and he offered his help. The day after, they went on their first date on the holodeck.

With shoreleaave over, it was back to work. What started as a standard mission scanning a nebula soon turned disastrous as some unusual readings led to them being pulled into an alternate universe ruled by the Dominion where the Federation didn't exist and its former officers were hunted by Dominion solders and loyalists. They spent months on the run, trying to keep a low profile while they worked to repair the damaged Gorkon and to return to their own universe. They were led by a man named Connor Lucas to a group of Romulans who offered the parts they needed in exchange for the rescue of a Romulan crew taken prisoner by Erik Jansen, Vess's evil alternate universe counterpart. The team managed to lie their way aboard Deep Space 10 where the prisoners were being held and they split into two groups to locate the prisoners. Once their mission had been completed, they returned to the Gorkon aboard Lucas's shuttle, but Lael was injured in the process, the intense pain of her spinal injury, exacerbated by a collision with a bulkhead, had caused her to pass out. She was taken to the Gorkon's sickbay for treatment.

About a month after the DSX incident, she encountered Chythar Skyfire in the Sto'vo'kor Lounge and, despite resenting him for the pain the Skyfire Virus and subsequent Skyfire Cure had brought into her life, the two quickly became friends. Not long after, the crew found a way home via a Romulan deflector array used to open another fissure like the one they'd been pulled through months ago and managed to evade Erik Jansen's ships to find the USS Yarahla, under the command of Commander Brunsig waiting on the other side to tow them back to Earth.

Notable Relationships
  • Aldek Desai: It was shortly after her return to her universe that Lael, driven by meeting the alternate version of him, contacted and met her biological father for the first time. The two quickly became close and he became an invaluable resource for her in helping her come to terms with her empathic gifts, a unique family trait.
  • Alex Blair: Though the two had worked together throughout their time in the other universe, they became closer when he began dating her best friend, Chythar Skyfire. They had a bit of a falling out when it was uncovered that Lael shared a deep telepathic/empathic bond with Chythar as a result of him pulling her back from the brink of death during her spine replacement surgery and that she was nursing a physical and emotional attraction to Chythar.
  • Chythar Skyfire The two first met during the Gorkon halloween masquerade, but really only became close after they became trapped in the other universe. In a moment of compassion upon seeing Chythar so miserable, Lael began a series of social graces lessons intended to make him less awkward. However, during their time in the other universe, they developed a close bond, even sharing a kiss while under the influence of extreme duress, believing the rest of the crew to be dead and them soon to be so. This sparked their telepathic/empathic link, which was only strengthened when Chythar pulled her back from death during her spinal surgery.
  • Dassa Alexander: She is considered one of Lael's best friends. The two first met back at the Academy while at a bar one night, leading to a drunken one-night stand between them. They remained close friends and developed an unusual empathic connection. When Lael met her now ex-husband, Jensar Berel, he forced her to sever ties with Dassa out of jealousy, which Lael stupidly did. Years later, following Lael's divorce from Jensar, the two reconnected aboard the Gorkon. Dassa still held a non-platonic affection for Lael, which put a strain on their friendship. However, Dassa eventually came to terms with her feelings and began dating Tobian Dalton, a counselor aboard the Gorkon. Lael's surgery was particularly hard for her as, in the midst of performing the surgery, Lael's death broke their connection. Though this was hard at first, when Chythar was able to bring Lael back, Dassa and Lael began work on repairing their friendship. The two are again very close.
  • Jansen Orrey: The two met when Lael came into Sickbay one night for a sedative, but an attraction quickly developed between them. After a few months as friends, they began dating. They were together until shortly after their return from the other universe, when they initially got engaged, but Lael broke off the engagement in a moment of anxiety fearing that Jansen had changed his mind. Though their next meeting a month following this incident was awkward, they agreed to stay friends.
  • Anjar Thoran: They worked together prior to their time in the other universe, but really became close when they were stuck there together. They shared a brief fling after Lael's break-up with Jansen, but remain just friends. The two have an easy banter due to their similarly cocky natures and share a close friendship, though not nearly as close as Lael shares with Dassa, Alex, and Chythar.
  • Tobian Dalton: Her connection with Tobian was first with him as her counselor and then as Dassa's significant other. She enjoyed a shoreleave with him and Dassa on the ice planet shortly following Lael's break-up with Jansen. It was during this shoreleave that she attempted to teach Tobian how to snowboard.
  • Michael Goodwell:The two met on the Victory when Lael was trying to charm her way in to see Janel (who had gone AWOL and was confined to quarters when he returned). Michael initially nursed a crush on the charming Lael, but during their time in the other universe, fell in love with Abigail Young and was planning to propose to her when she died, something that he blamed Lael for.
  • Aleya Thompson: She and Lael first became friends while serving together aboard the Victory. Aleya's fun and laid back personality was a welcome relief to the everyday anxiety and stress when they become trapped in the other universe. The two are still friends and talk regularly.
  • Abigail Young: She was a nurse's assistant who Lael worked with in the other universe to evacuate injured crew from a damaged section of the ship. However, when Lael was attempting to erect a forcefield around the section to give them more time to evacuate, the hull breached. She was unsuccessful in erecting the forcefield and, out of fear for her own life, she ran when Abigail was sucked out into space, something she still feels immense guilt about.
  • Madeline Young: The daughter of a colleague, Abigail Young, who died in the other universe, she became Lael's ward after her Abigail's mother died and Abigail's will named Lael as a back-up guardian. Lael, Dassa, and Chythar have all since developed a very close bond with the little girl. Maddy affectionately refer's to Lael's two best friends as Uncle Chythar and Aunt Dassa. She connects most closely with Chythar, perhaps because of their shared abilities.
  • Ayiana Sevo: Though Lael was not especially close with Ayiana when they first began serving together, the two had something in common in that both had a friendship with Janel Tarna and had both worked together to stabilize him during a mission gone awry. They became a little closer during their time in the other universe and Lael even asked for Ayiana's input to solve the issue with her spinal injury and the nanites, to which Ayiana proposed genetronics. This technology later became part of a very complicated procedure intended to keep Lael mobile.
  • Cory Stoyer: The two became acquainted during an away mission where their team leader and First Officer became incapacitated. Though the two didn't always agree on what next steps needed to be taken, Lael came to respect the engineer for his dedication to his duty. At one point, she began instructing him and Chythar Skyfire in the Earth martial art of jiu-jitsu.
  • Eerie: She didn't know Eerie very well and her longest conversation with him was in the Officer's Lounge during their time in the other universe. It was just following a mission to gain much needed supplies. He commended her on her actions and they talked a little bit about her scars.
  • Alucard Vess: Though her relationship with Alucard is mostly professional, she enjoys his wit and sense of humor as well as his professionalism and his dedication to both his duty and his family.
  • Yishira Somlen: Lael first met Shira as her counselor after Tobian and Dassa started dating. Though she initially didn't like the woman very much, Lael has come to respect her professionalism.
  • Nefan Venal: She and Nefan first met in the Mess Hall a couple months after she and Jansen had broken up. He'd flirted outrageously, which she'd returned in kind, reluctantly agreeing to a date. However, when he tried to kiss her, she became spooked and never went on another date with him.

Post-Academy: USS ZA

Lael aboard the USS Za (2394).

Shortly after her spinal replacement surgery, Lael followed her transfer orders with her friends Dassa and Chythar to the USS Za where Alex was already waiting. Not long after her arrival, she reported for her first duty shift on the bridge where she was a part of first contact with a bear-like race called the Hocktin. Lael was assigned to Alex's team to help with setting up a ship to ship network to exchange information. However, the mission quickly went sour when a crewmember was bitten by a flea-like creature and was exposed to a deadly virus.

To make matters worse, Lael and Alex were bitten while aboard the Hocktin vessel and Captain Rhani her team were taken hostage by a militaristic faction. The situation was further exacerbated when Hocktin scientist Professor Mindor beamed aboard without following proper quarantine procedures and exposed the whole ship to the virus. Lael and Alex learned that the Captain had been taken and had to they fight against time to get a blood sample from the immune Hocktin to save the crew and locate the Captain before the disease reached its final stage. The energy they expended in their efforts took a severe toll on them both and they barely returned to the Za in time to receive the cure the Medical team had synthesized.

Notable Relationships
  • Janel Tarna: Lael and Janel developed feelings for one another while both were held captive and tortured. They dated for a period even after Janel was transferred, but mutually ended the relationship due to the distance.
  • Tarsii Asmara: Though the two only served together briefly, she came to highly respect his intelligence and his dedication to his duty.
  • Nugra: Despite her initial hesitation, she came to highly respect him as a commanding officer and as a colleague. She enjoyed working with him and was sad to see him step down from command of the Victory.

Post-Academy: USS VERITAS

Lael aboard the USS Veritas (2395).

Lael transferred to the USS Veritas on Stardate 239407.07 after the decommissioning of the USS Za. When she, Chythar, and Alex beamed down to New Macau, the Antor II capital, they were shocked at the devastation they found. When they beamed aboard the Veritas, they checked in with Captain Roshanara Rahman where they learned that rifts in space had caused disastrous earthquakes that had damaged many of the planet's dome environments and made them uninhabitable on top of leaving many people dead. Lael was assigned to work with Alex and Luna Walker, the Veritas Chief Engineer, to repair the domes. While they determined a more sustainable, longer term solution, they beamed down to establish temporary housing in some old mines that would protect the inhabitants from dangerous levels of tetryon radiation. However, they became caught in a cave-in. While Lael and Alex escaped unharmed, Luna and Anjar Thoran became trapped. Lael, Alex and the Search and Rescue (SAR) Team led by Commander Kelrod and Lieutenant, Junior Grade Carter Greyson worked desperately to free the two trapped officers. At last, they were able to safely retrieve Luna and Anjar and transport them to Sickbay to be treated for their injuries.

Lieutenant Commander Lael Rosek is the 32-year-old first officer of the USS Montreal under Commander Mei'konda. She previously served as an engineer and helm officer respectively aboard the starships Victory, Gorkon, Za, and Veritas, and was chief engineer of the latter vessel.

She was born in Cedar Springs, Michigan on Earth to mother Adelynn Rosek minutes before her twin brother, Kellan Rosek. As a child, she excelled at mathematics and science. Always curious about the world around her and the way things worked, she enjoyed building and repairing things, much to her mother's displeasure. At the tender age of 17, she enrolled in the Command Track at Starfleet Academy only to be dropped from it due her very negative reaction to the torture and hostage holovids and texts she was exposed to. Instead, she decided to pursue the Engineering track.

Personal History

Lael was born two minutes before her twin brother Kellan on Stardate 236610.24 to Adelynn Rosek in Cedar Springs, Michigan. She never met her father and, due to her mother's silence, knew very little about him. From a young age, Lael showed a talent for Mathematics and her curious nature led her to a passion for taking things apart to see how they worked. She spent much of her younger years in fields, studying the local wildlife, even to the point of keeping a nature journal. Though she was bullied in her younger years due to her Al-Leyan heritage, her easy-going and compassionate nature won her many friends.

As she grew older, she sought more adventurous pursuits, chief among them being sailing, cliff-diving, water skiing, rock climbing, and swimming in local ponds and lakes. When she wasn't hanging out with friends, she spent summers on her Uncle's farm doing chores and helping to care for the animals. This became a passion for her and at age 14, Lael joined her school's FFE club (Future Farmers of Earth). Lael's mother was determined to train her in lady-like arts. When Lael was 15, she began attending a finishing school course her mother taught at the local country club. Lael learned social graces, various dancing styles, and how to play the piano.

Lael began her freshman year at Cedar Springs High School on Stardate 238108.12. She was a member of her school's National Honor Society and participated in such school sports as Track, Cross Country, Basketball, and Dance. In her senior year (Stardate 2385), she was nominated for Homecoming Queen and lost by only three votes. The idea of Starfleet had fascinated her since she'd attended a camp there at age 14. She spent most of her adolescence dreaming of a career as a Starfleet Officer. Following her graduation from high school on Stardate 238505.25, she took the Entrance Exam and began her first day as a cadet on Stardate 238508.07 intending to follow the Command track.

She did well academically and was excelling on the Command track until the holovideos and graphic descriptions of torture caused her nightmares and PTSD. She was forced to undergo counseling and drop out of the Command track. Her twin brother convinced her that she would do better in gold than red, and Lael began studying engineering, operations, physics and communications. Her first romantic liaison occurred during this time, with one Ivina Genestra. The two were together for about a year before Lael's nearly-fatal rock climbing accident, which resulted in near total paralysis. Through controversial nanite therapy she managed a miraculous recovery and once again resumed courses at the academy. During the engineering apprentice internship aboard Starbase 118, she met the man who would later become her husband, ending in a messy divorce six months later. In 2391, she graduated with a dual major and a minor in physics before receiving her first posting aboard the USS Victory in engineering.

FULL DETAILS: See Biography

Personality

She is extremely ambitious, persistent, determined and somewhat controlling. Not in a stubborn sense however, because she works for what she wants and controls with justified reasons. She never gives up when in pursuit of a goal. She is resourceful, adaptable and flexible, allowing her to re-survey a situation and take a different approach if necessary. She is fiercely competitive with strong observation skills and an excellent memory, allowing her to recall facts and when necessary, bring them to the table at the time of need. She uses proper facts and arguments to support her thoughts and opinions, ultimately winning her many intellectual and other battles. Her adaptability makes her an asset in diplomatic situations and she excels at restoring order to a chaotic situation.

Strengths Charming and self-confident, Lael is the ideal diplomat and a great person to have around in tense situations. She puts all she has into everything she does and doesn't settle for anything less than spectacular. Her strong intuition allows her to determine a person's true motives, alerting her in moments if the individual is not to be trusted. Fiercely loyal, faithful and dependable, she will fight for those she loves and for what she believes is right. Her high intellect and dedication makes her a great problem-solver, an ideal person in a crisis. She's mentally strong, which allows her to overcome most external influences. Her natural curiosity and love of exploration make her exciting company.

Weaknesses Despite her high intellect, Lael is prone to extreme jealousy and once involved in something, can border on obsessive. She's the classic workaholic, determined to solve all the universe's problems herself. She doesn't forgive easily and never forgets, occasionally acting on her vengeful tendancies. Part of her natural diplomatic skill is her ability to manipulate. Though she more often than not uses this trait for good, it comes in handy when she's in the mood for revenge. Her stubbornness and low tolerance for change mean she's inflexible regarding her beliefs and routines. She has great difficulty in acknowledging her flaws and can be somewhat judgmental of others, especially if her own beliefs are attacked.

The team managed to lie their way aboard Deep Space Ten where the prisoners were being held and they split into two groups to locate the prisoners.

Not long after, the crew found a way home via a Romulan deflector array used to open another fissure like the one they'd been pulled through months ago and managed to evade Erik Jansen's ships to find the USS Yahrala, under the command of Commander Brunsig waiting on the other side to tow them back to Earth.

BACKGROUND
