“A little revolution is good... every now and then.”

The USS Independence, NCC-1776-A, was the fifth Prometheus class vessel built in the Fleet, commissioned and built at Utopia Planitia before being dispatched to the Ithassa Region to replace the loss of the first USS Independence during the Gorn Conflict of 2383. Like its predecessor, the Independence-A launched under the command of Rear Admiral Jessa Anassasi.

Prometheus class heavy cruisers are an onset of combat support Fleet vessels, designed primarily in response to technologically advanced threats facing the Federations. Developed from a combination of the technologies of Defiant, Sovereign and Intrepid classes, the Prometheus utilizes the latest in ablative armour, warp field technology, and quantum weaponry. It is the only ship class which is capable of separating into three sections (upper engineering hull, lower engineering hull, and the saucer section) coordinated through its multi-vector assault mode.

While the USS Independence-A was designed as a tactical assault cruiser, it served a much wider role and performed deep space exploration and diplomatic/military roles, utilizing the full advancements of its science, medical, and engineering facilities. It continued the exploration and defense of the Ithassa Region as the Fleet’s flagship.

In late 2388, the Independence-A was destroyed in the Mirror Universe. Rather than allow the ship to fall into enemy hands, Fleet Captain Sidney Riley ordered its self-destruction. After seizing control of the mirror counterpart of the USS Tiger to return back to the prime universe, most of the Independence-A's surviving crew were reassigned to the newly commissioned USS Tiger-A.
