Family

Background

Wil's grandfather, Astrad Ukinix, had a falling out with his parents and became disillusioned with Betazoid culture and religion. He also hated his telepathic and empathic abilities.

Astrad left Betazed to start a new life. He ended up on Earth working in wineries in France, where he met Wil's grandmother, Hayley, an Australian studying viticulture in France. Hayley and Astrad eventually married, and moved to Australia to run a winery in a small rural community, which suited Astrad. Astrad and Hayley had two children - Sally (female) and Anacem (male - Wil's father).

Anacem studied Oenology, becoming a wine maker. Whilst in Fremantle on the night before a wine maker’s conference, Anacem met his future wife, Stacey Ukinix. Stacey was born in Melbourne, Australia but moved to Fremantle after she joined Starfleet as a tactical officer. Stacey and Anacem married quickly after their first meeting, and soon after had their first and only child, Wil.

Wil’s home has always been Fremantle, but he attended junior school in Beijing, the Oceanic Regional Middle School in Auckland, New Zealand, and the Dr. Andy Thomas Senior School in Sydney, Australia.

He is close to his mother Stacey, and from a young age wanted to join Starfleet to be like his Mother. Throughout his life, he spent much of his time pulling apart and putting back together all manner of technology and reverse engineering software systems, which is how he came to have a technical mind. He also spent a lot of time at his grandparent’s winery - he has a great relationship with them, especially with Astrad.

Before joining Starfleet Academy, Wil took a "gap year" (that ended up being almost two years), which is why he was slightly older than other cadets.

Betazoid Ancestory

Wil on Betazed in 2396

Before starting with Starfleet, Wil had never been to Betazed. Unlike his half Betazoid father, Wil had an interest in Betazed and Betazoid Culture throughout his childhood years. Wil saw Astrad as his kindred connection to Betazed, and Astrad suggested that maybe Wil could connect with Betazoids better than he himself ever did. However, after his onset of his strong empathic abilities, Wil became less curious about his Betazoid heritage, and much more focused on being human.

Being only one-quarter Betazoid, Wil looks human, and does not have black irises like his father or grandfather. While he knows that his being one-quarter Betazoid is on his personnel file, he is happy for people to think he is human. He does not bring up his Betazoid heritage, unless prompted.

Whilst on shoreleave and visiting his family on Earth, Sky Blake, whilst visiting Betazed, informed Wil of some gossip she had heard about the Ukinix name from Rivi Vataix[1][2]. Wil confronted Astrad about the gossip, causing him to discover that Astrad was originally named "Astradem", and was a noble of the Ninth House of Betazed - which Astrad had kept secret since his move to Earth[3].

Several months later, Wil received a written message from his second cousin Keehani Ral asking for assistance so that her mother Vaxa Ral could reclaim the title of Matriarch of the Ninth House. When Ghant Xerix returned to the Veritas, Ghant's cousin Choupette was killed in a bombing in France. Wil decided to attend Choupette's funeral on Betazed to support his new crewmate. Whilst there, he met Keehani for the first time.

Inherited Empathic Abilities

There was nothing special or extraordinary about Wil's upbringing - until his teenage years. At age 16, Wil (like his grandfather) developed strong empathic abilities, which Wil struggled with, affecting his education. He received counselling from several Earth stationed Betazoids to help him cope, with limited success.

Just after he turned 17, his worried mother Stacey asked T'Rav, a fellow Starfleet officer from Vulcan who was temporarily stationed on Earth, to counsel him. Wil received several counselling sessions from T'Rav, which helped him immensely.

Wil considers the empathic part of his heritage as a burden, but has grown accustomed to it as "just being there". Given his human appearance, having empathic abilities is something he keeps to himself and only discusses with close friends and family.

His empathic abilities can cause some nervousness in Wil, and he is not sure the human part of him is equipped to deal with it - even after his extensive counselling in his late teens, and no medical evidence to support his theory.

Wil has no telepathic abilities.

Relationships

G'var

While marooned on Limbo, Wil got to know G'var and became good friends with her on Purplewhitehaven beach. Their professional and personal relationship blossomed in the next few months - G'var, being a Klingon, intrigued Wil - and scared him just as much. After G'var lost her arm fighting a native predator of Limbo, Wil wondered if she was a "reckless Klingon", which made him question whether he should get involved with her. When he visited afterwards to check on her well-being, their friendship became romantic after Wil realised she wasn't reckless after all - she was a junior and inexperienced officer as much as he was. [4][5]

Geoffrey Teller

Geoffrey Teller has been Wil's Chief of Engineering since joining the USS Veritas. Even though both of them were Ensigns when Wil first joined, Wil greatly respected Geoffrey's position as his Chief, and relied on his leadership. Wil cemented his friendship with Geoffrey while marooned on Limbo, and was proud of him when he got promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. While Wil jokes about Geoffrey's love for sea shanties as much as the other Veritas crew members do, Wil enjoys hearing Geoffrey sing them, because he knows it means Geoffrey's in a good mood. Wil does however also find it amusing when Teller is in a grumpy mood, and enjoys being cheeky towards him to cheer him up.

Niccolò del Vedova

While Wil was aware of Niccolò del Vedova, it wasn't until after 119 days on marooned Limbo that Wil finally met Del. When Wil realised that Del was also from Australia, Wil felt as though part of his home was with him, even though he was literally light years from Earth.

Music Interests

When he was 16, one of the Betazoid counsellors had told him to try to appreciate the emotions expressed in art. Ultimately, he discovered music of his native Earth of the mid-20th to early 21st century.[6] Not only was he surprised there was so much of it and of many different genres he'd never heard of, he also found a lot of it conveyed raw emotions. At first, he thought most of the music of that time was poor quality, but he kept going back to it - and eventually acquired a taste for a lot of it.

Over the years since his late teens, Wil amassed an eclectic collection of songs that he liked. When leaving Earth to start his first Starfleet assignment on the USS Veritas, he took a copy of his collection on a PADD that he "acquired" from the Academy. Those songs were transferred to his personal storage space on the ship's computer. Whenever he is working in a Jeffries tube (especially on his own), he usually plays a song from his collection through a PADD, to break the silence.

Events that occur to Wil after he graduated from Starfleet Academy remind him of specific songs for various reasons. Since joining the Veritas, Wil has found himself singing more than he ever did before in his life.

Personality

Wil has a wicked, cheeky sense of humour. He likes to make fun in most situations, in a fun and friendly type of way. If there is an intense situation where people around him are feeling strong emotions, it can affect him by making him grumpy.

Mission History

Mission History
Mission Stardate Synopsis Songs
FlashPoint 239511-239512 After the Tholians destroy Astrofori One in the Menthar Corridor, the crews of the USS Veritas and USS Montreal must prevent all-out war from breaking out between the Federation and the Tholians over a Starfleet cargo vessel left adrift in Tholian territory carrying classified equipment. [01. Flashpoint]
Wil's first mission sees him joining the USS Veritas at a time that coincided with a spatial anomoly that damages the ship. His first job was to enact repairs, before he discovers that a software bomb has been planted in the ship's computer. After being suspicious of Jhalib Ekal, he assists the acting chief engineer, Ensign Geoffrey Teller, to scuttle the USS Artemis in Tholian territory.
Limbo 239512-239601 When sabotage hits the USS Veritas, the crew is forced to abandon ship and seek refuge on an uninhabited moon. [02. Limbo]
After only having started his Starfleet career for a few weeks, Wil evacuates the Veritas with the rest of the crew to become stranded on Limbo, a tropical moon. He assists his chief engineer Geoffrey Teller in building a hot tub, meets his fellow Human/Betazoid hybrid Raissa Moonsong and her daughter Natalia for the first time, a forms a friendship with G'var on "Purplewhitehaven" beach. After it appears the crew were stranded on Limbo forever in a time displacement field, Wil helps Geoffrey create an escape plan, before joining G'var on an expedition to the far side of the continent to find more survivors.
Dawn 239601-239602 Four months since being stranded on an M-class moon, the Veritas crew embark on a bold plan to get back to their ship and rescue themselves. [03. Dawn]
Wil witnesses G'var losing her arm to a fierce native predator of Limbo known as a "Mantilion", before they discover a second camp of survivors, led by Captain Nickson. Whilst at the camp, he begins a romantic relationship with G'var, before the survivors from "Camp Nickson" decide to evacuate and head for Captain Rahman's group of survivors. On the way back to the main camp, Wil witnesses another attack from a Mantilion, this time on Nickson.
Home 239602 While Veritas is repaired, the crew returns home, some to families and loved ones while others fight to be reunited with theirs. [04. Home]
Safely back on board the damaged Veritas, Wil stays with his Chief engineer as the ship makes it way to a docking berth in Esperance - which results in a drunken night in Adelaide to blow off steam. Geoffrey and Wil decide to "borrow" G'var's prosthetic arm while she is sleeping, to enhance it - only to enrage the Klingon. Wil joins some of his fellow crew for New Year's celebrations at the Star Station Esperance, before he returns home to his native Australia on Earth to see his family and introduce them to his new girlfriend. During his time on Earth, he has dinner with Jansen Orrey, Raissa Moonsong and her daughter Natalia on Jansen's plantation in Louisiana. He also learns from Sky Blake that his grandfather is a former Betazoid Noble. Out of boredom, Wil cuts his shoreleave short and returns to the Veritas at Utopia Planitia to help Geoffrey with the new Warp XV engine. However, he is momentarily recalled to Earth to discuss the events of Limbo with Fleet Captain Cassandra Egan Manno.
Sentinel 239603 With tensions still high after the destruction of Astrofori One, Veritas is sent back to the Menthar Corridor to investigate the sudden disappearance of a Tholian fleet. [05. Sentinel]
With the ship under attack, Wil is dispatched to the computer core, only to find a probe (which Wil affectionately names "Prongy") lodged in the ship, attempting to interface with the computer and take control of the ship's systems. When he tries to stop it, the probe hits Wil's shoulder with a bolt of energy. After assisting G'var, Jayla Petras and Raissa Moonsong to neutralise the probe's threat, he joins Lieutenant Dallas Zea in a shuttle to scan the debris of the USS Solaris that was seemingly destroyed by Tholians. With an away team including Wil's chief Geoffrey Teller dispatched to investigate ancient ruins on a planet, Wil is briefly left in charge of engineering before he joins an away team on a re-assembled Solaris in an attempt to regain control of it.
Play the Part 239605 The Veritas crew investigates a mysterious stasis box, while Ghant Xerix and Wil Ukinix head to Betazed and soon find themselves caught up in the drama of the Noble Houses. Meanwhile, with the captain's life at stake, Geoffrey Teller is forced to continue the saga of Silas Finley. [06. Play the Part]
After helping Geoffrey modify Jansen Orrey's Romulan distruptor, and witnessing Geoff as the test dummy for the weapon, Wil joins Geoff and Jansen in Captain Rahman's ready room for disciplinary action. His punishment is sidearm re-certification, which Wil doesn't enjoy given his dislike of hand weapons. Soon after Ghant Xerix first joins the Veritas, Wil accompanies him to Betazed, and whilst there meets his extended family Keehani and Vaxa Ral for the first time. He attends a Liberation Day party hosted by the Rivi Vataix of the Eleventh House of Betazed - and teaches her and Ghant an ancient Terran dance. On his return trip back to the Veritas, he suddenly has to step up as a commanding officer when the Guardians of Betazed attempt a terrorist attack on the ship carrying he and his crewmates.
The First Colony 239606 Veritas investigates the murder of a Starfleet officer on Ketar V, where tensions have been rising between the growing Romulan refugee population and the original Federation settlers of the colony. [07. The First Colony]
Wil is assigned to his first official away team comprising of Captain Rahman and Commander Kelrod to interview Raoul Livernois, owner of the Livernois Shipyards. After the interview, the trio make their way to "Welder's Diner" which boasts the best burgers in the Shoals. Whilst at the diner Wil, Roshanara and Kelrod have a run in with some xenophobic locals, and are arrested by the Colonial Coalition Marshals Service (CCMS) - requiring the trio to be bailed out by Sky Blake. Wil then joins Addison MacKenzie, Kelrod and Raissa Moonsong on the surface to assist and monitor a CCMS raid on "Romulan Town", a part of Centennial City that is populated by Romulan Refugees. Wil calls in the assistance of the USS Veritas to put out a building fire. When a relief effort is coordinated to help the Romulan refugees who now have no home, tensions rise when some Romulans take the CCMS Chief Marshall hostage, and Wil is forced to draw a phaser.
Tour de Ketar V 239608 The Veritas crew spend shore leave helping the colonists and refugees of Ketar V, while also enjoying the local hospitality. [08. Tour de Ketar V]
After helping Geoffrey Teller to help rebuild parts of Romulan Town, Wil decides to organise a pub crawl of some of the seedier establishments of Ketar V. During the pub crawl, he reenacts his arrest at Welder's Diner, bumps into two middle-aged British ladies he had previously met on a space station, performs a duet with G'var at a karaoke bar, nearly gets into a fight at the "Explosive Decompression" bar, and gets completely drunk at a suave jazz bar. Upon his return, Captain Rahman gets to see first hand just how "tired and emotional" he is. He also sits a bridge re-certification test with Captain Rahman (and fails), helps to create the new "Stargazer Lounge" with Geoffrey and Charlena Vanlith, and is informed by his friend and engineering chief Geoffrey Teller that he is to be acting chief engineer while Geoffrey is away testing the USS Diligent.
Charybdis 239609 With a class of schoolchildren aboard on a field trip during a regional starship race, Veritas falls through a hidden wormhole into a pocket of seemingly empty subspace only to discover that they may not be alone. [09. Charybdis]
As Acting Chief Engineer, Wil leads the engineering team to make modifications to the USS Veritas so that it complies a regional ship race's stringent rules. A group of school children visit the ship on an excursion, and Wil describes to them in basic terms how a warp engine works. Once the race starts, another ship cuts the Veritas off and uses some questionable race tactics, so Wil lodges a protest with the race organisers in the most surprising of ways. The race is cut short when the ship falls into a void at "Scylla Pass", leaving it without any power, and Wil has to get the ship back up and running while it is attacked by creatures names "Vipers". He experiences telepathic communication with Raissa Moonsong for the first time, before he joins an away team lead by Jansen Orrey to one of the other racing ships. Upon their return, he leads more repairs in engineering while the Veritas escapes the void and returns to normal space with the aid of the USS Diligent.
Lost and Found 239611 As the Veritas and the Diligent head back towards Ketar V, the crew tries to recover from the events of 'Charybids' while welcoming some new faces aboard. An unexpected visit from a Betazoid noble provides the ship an opportunity to host a formal reception dinner, while the upcoming holidays are the perfect setting for a team of Elf-gineers to leave delightful surprises for the whole crew. Medical Record

  • Has recurring right ankle soreness due to an injury from football training at age 17.
  • In stressful situations with other people, is prone to blurred vision and seeing "fields" around people, due to his empathic nature. In most cases, this causes him to suffer from a migraine headache, and can lead to exhaustion
  • Very slight discolouration on the skin on his shoulder due to a burn mark from a burst of energy from an AI controlled prong that embedded itself in the USS Veritas.
  • Has a small letter "g" tattooed on his left ankle.
  • Is otherwise fit and healthy.
