Maria was born the youngest of three children to a comparatively traditional family in Argentina. While comparatively isolated from a lot of technology and non-human culture, she was heavily immersed in a broad range of earth languages and customs early on, notably the cultures of several indigenous peoples from the region and the greater Americas. She demonstrated significant aptitude for music and especially dance from a young age. Her parents quickly pushed her into top schools from the area, eventually resigning to let her use a transporter to commute to Buenos Aires for lessons. The family moved to Paris when she was in her teens, nominally for opportunities for the whole family, but in no small part to offer even more opportunities to Maria's training at the Paris Ballet School.

She attended the prestigious Tisch School for the Arts in New York for a degree in music majoring in dance, where by all accounts she excelled with a combination of exceptionally hard work and natural intellect and ability. Her master's degree marked a significant shift away from her focus on human-based cultures, at least formally, with a specialism in xeno-musicology. Records indicate special proficiency picking up languages and instruments, at least conversationally. After graduation, she joined a dance group specializing in experimental combinations and synthesis of various styles. Despite strong reviews - one critic calling the group 'an explosive tour-de-force of physical dynamism' - the group disbanded after just over a year lacking popular reception and experiencing creative disagreements. After this, she spent several months living with her Sister and Brother in law in Córdoba, and traveling throughout the Americas.

No official records exist on why Maria joined Starfleet in a sudden change of career. Admissions advisors were skeptical about admitting her given this in addition to her psychological profile, but were ultimately swayed by a recommendation from her Brother in Law, who serves as a Lieutenant in Starfleet. Given her already extensive educational background, she was granted several credits accelerating her timetable for graduation. Her academy record is exceptionally average, remarkable only for a considerable number of derogatory remarks surrounding her behavior and conduct; though none seemingly serious enough to merit major discipline. Several instructor remarks cite high potential, but a stubborn unwillingness to completely apply herself. She largely avoided any cultural or artistic types of classes at the academy, and rejected offers to join extracurriculars that would have made sense with her musical past. She was known to associate with multiple groups of high-performing cadets, developing a handful of loyal friendships and equally many confrontational relationships.

Characterizations of Maria range a variety of often contradictory adjectives: confident, self-possessed, out-going, individualistic, private, warm, overbearing, humorous, irreverent, bold, unruly, flirtatious, moody, physical, chaotic, intelligent, unambitious, unmotivated, and many others. The way she presents herself to others frequently varies with mood and her estimation of the individual she's interacting with. She's extraordinarily loyal to her friends, building them up and pushing them, but also a cunning enemy, willing to use unconventional and effective approaches. Her application to the academy raised a lot of eyebrows during the psychoanalytic phase, with an unwillingness to discuss in detail her motivations for joining Starfleet almost stopping her acceptance.

She's a remarkably quick learner when focused, but a terrible student given to frequent distraction and bouts of procrastination. Her background in dance demonstrates a particular combination of abilities: teamwork, creativity, intense organization, immaculate planning, and ability to still change direction and improvise with little notice. On the flip side, when unmotivated or disinterested she can be chaotic, scattered, and challenging to work with. Aside from a sloppy (if effective) approach to computers, she hasn't proven any special ability in engineering or sciences. Instead, she seems to have a liking for research, law, logistics, communications, and history.

Maria's self-assurance and sense of humor lead the show with most of her interactions. She has a distinct distaste for formality, preferring an irreverent and straightforward approach to her work, to the chagrin of senior officers everywhere. There's rarely very little doubt about what Maria is feeling, and she can be highly expressive. She forms opinions of others quickly, but seems to be always open to being surprised by people, for good or ill.

Maria has said little about her parents, but what she has said makes it clear they don't speak any more. Maria is fairly certain they don't even know what ship she's posted to. Even before things turned bitter, it's apparent it was a fraught and complicated relationship, particularly with her mother.

The quiet, unassuming kid of the bunch, he and Maria haven't always been particularly close, but never really fought either. He's been supportive of her joining Starfleet, and has actually been closer to Maria since. He is the most regular penpal of the family, but still lives in Argentina, working on a ranch with their uncle.

The oldest child, now married to Lieutenant Paulo Ledesma. The two were quite close growing up, but lost touch when Maria moved to Paris with their parents and Camila stayed behind. The two reconnected after Maria left her dance troupe, and before she went to Starfleet Academy. Maria frequently calls her big sister "Cami".

Randal Shayne Commanding Officer, USS Arrow Maria's captain on the Arrow. It was pretty clear almost immediately the two wouldn't see eye-to-eye, with Maria's off-the-wall sense of humor and dangerously clever individuality no doubt shortening the captain's life expectancy. Maria views her captain as something of a rigid, emotionally closed-off authoritarian to be avoided or outwitted. Still, she harbors a sneaking respect for his abilities however antagonistic the relationship may be - not that she'd ever tell him.

Quentin Collins The Unlikely, Prodigious Bond Collins was Maria's XO on the Arrow when she first came aboard. The relationship started on a bad foot after misjudgements on both sides, but has since grown into a quirky and wholesome friendship. Their relationship took its current shape after accidentally swapping bodies on a mission to Gentii II, and sharing no small amount of personal memories and fears when plunged into a liminal space as their neural patterns broke down. Since then, Maria feels rather fond, even protective, of the man but was reassigned before their new relationship had an opportunity to be tested.

Cassandra Mason Friend Though the rambunctious Maria is quite different from the reserved, even shy, doctor, the two have gotten surprisingly close. Maria plays the role of willful extrovert, but knows she has a lot to gain from Cassie's thoughtful compassion. Maria is deeply grateful for someone who understands and accepts her for who she is - even if she does sometimes misplace her overabundance of energy and passionate emotions.

Regan Wilde Best Friend and Playmate Flashy and outgoing pretty-boy - the two are too similar to be anything but friends, but different enough to regularly drive each other crazy too. Maria is particularly close with Regan after he reached out and made her feel at home after a rocky first mission, despite having a fairly explosive start to their friendship. The two are playmates, confidants, partners-in-crime, and may eventually even be best friends if they can figure out their differences and continue to open up.

Chloe Waters Prior Roommate Maria's old roommate on the Arrow. Maria doesn't overly mind her roommate, though it would be hard to find a more different pair of human women. Her boisterousness and humor put Chloe in an awkward spot more often than not, but never from malicious intent. Maria doesn't really understand or have much patience for Chloe's closeted, dry, and shy personality, but it doesn't bug her much either.

R'Ariel Confidant Arrow's counselor seems like almost a natural fit for the kind of person Maria seeks out: kind, clever, and capable. Maria admires her way with words as well as her thoughtfulness. The two share a love of food and drink, and Maria has promised she'll have to make her family's asado for R'Ariel.

A Scouring of Stars

Maria arrives aboard the USS Arrow after an incredibly long, sleepless shuttle flight made unbearable by a faulty inertial damper she was unable to repair. Out of the loop, and terribly loopy, she makes her first introduction to the captain and crew during a conference between the major powers orbiting Theta 122. She's immediately pressed into service - with the help of Crewman Patrick, Chloe Waters, and Hayley Caden in Shuttlecraft 1, she targeted and destroyed a dampening field cutting off communications with an orbital strike. The success is only temporary, and soon the life of the captain and other senior officers are under threat, trapped in the conference room with the bloodthirsty orion pirate queen, Ghant. Maria discovers that in the crew's haste to return to the conference, she wasn't granted command codes for the ship, and ends up locked out from the computer and unable to assist. She hatches an insane plan to use the security module from the shuttle she arrived on to hijack the Arrow and deploy anesthizine before boarding pirates can take control. With the help of Chief Brom, Eerie, Regan Wilde, and the engineering staff, the crew holds out against an all-out assault on main engineering long enough for her to complete the plan and deploy security screens (and become accidentally registered as Fleet Admiral in the process). Still the anesthizine is inoperative, and she discovers she must engage a manual bypass in the cargo bay. Once there, she is confronted with the escaped Ghant, who nearly roundly defeats Maria after calling her ability and motivation into question. Given a moment's reprieve by the heroic sacrifice of Lt. Wilde and intervention of Lt. Serinus, she pulls herself together and just in time before she's cut off from help yet again. She finally gains the upper hand and kills Ghant, and manages a hasty re-activation of the anesthizine before falling unconscious from her wounds and sleep deprivation.

Shore Leave

Maria finds herself struggling to adapt to everyday life aboard the Arrow, especially after such a wild first day. She fails to connect with her new roommate, and has a spat with both the CO and XO in an attempt to minimize and hide her actions, already set on edge by the ship buzzing about her actions in Engineering. She finds herself reliving killing Ghant over and over again. She reaches out to Regan Wilde, one of the few people she felt like she connected to after cake, but the first two tries at their friendship go terribly awry. She speaks at the funeral for Sofia Davenport. Regan and Maria finally manage to bond over a game of paintball assassin, and Maria is overwhelmed when Regan reveals he gave up his holodeck time on the Syrtan to be with her, and they become fast friends. Maria receives the Legion of Merit and the Innovation Ribbon in the awards ceremony.

The Ultimatum

Maria leads a new charge to decipher the Sheliak language, under pressure with the new Sheliak threat to Theta 122. The effort doesn't get very far with too little time to make serious progress. She aids in a maneuver to disable the Razor's Edge, and mostly facilitates the crew's actions. When the crew discovers they can't get communications with the away team and that the shuttle had been shot down, she works with the engineering teams to jury-rig a probe that can bypass the interference in the atmosphere. This plan helps regain contact, and also draw the attention of a Sheliak captain. With contact re-established with the away team, the Arrow discovers there's not just an Iconian portal, but a live Iconian on the surface. With the Sheliak captain now heading to the surface, Maria assists with a plan to dive the Arrow into the atmosphere and shut down the portal so the Sheliak can't benefit from the technology. The plan works, and the crew rescue a number of wounded from the surface, the Sheliak beaming away and repatriating the rest.

Shoreleave

Maria started out the leave with little to do other than paperwork, leaving her in a bit of a bored bind. She spent a fair bit of her early leave with her friend, Regan - emceeing "FSB" and consoling him about long lost love, Nicholas Rehme. During the same discussion, Maria discovers her roommate, Chloe, might be harboring a growing crush on R'Ariel, and she meets the ship's new doctor, Cassie Mason. She eventually returns to her doldrums though, worse than ever. She ends up improvising a rap during the bridge night watch with Collins that cuts some of the tension, and the two end up reconciling and sharing music and drinks while the watch finishes. It's still not enough, and in an attempt to escape dwelling on her past, she invents a project to build a holodeck aboard the Arrow. Her first step is to justify the need of such a construction, and prove its viability. In the course of doing so, she winds up taking likeable R'Ariel out for drinks and having a surprisingly in-depth conversation about identity, siblings, myths, and legends. Soon after, she's compiling data, and discovers Regan is being transferred off of Arrow by his father. Upset, she confronts him, and is frustrated when he refuses to fight the transfer even though he doesn't want to go. The next day, she goes to sickbay to gather more data for pitching the holodeck, but winds up making a new friend when she confides in Cassie about Regan, and shares a conversation about joining Starfleet and Maria's past. Maria is delighted later when Regan asks her to help him stop the transfer once and for all - she takes internal sensors offline long enough for Regan to have a private conversation with his father. That complete, she finally pitches her idea of a holodeck to the Captain and the Engineering team. Afterwards, she has an antagonistic confrontation with Shayne over what to do with the Sheliak linguistic data Arrow gathered, but more importantly the events of Regan's transfer. She eventually reaches a truce with the Captain, only backing down from her position when the alternative is a transfer. She's awarded a second Innovation Ribbon for her efforts assisting in closing the Iconian Portal on Theta 122.

Miracle of Venthis

The Arrow is assigned to Second Contact with the people of the planet Venthis. Venthis had been in a global catastrophic civil war for nearly two hundred years before the fighting suddenly stopped eighteen months ago. After First Contact with the Arkhipov, the Venthis have petitioned for membership in the United Federation of Planets. Arrow is tasked with evaluating the planet for membership and discovering the reason for their new technological advancement in such a short time. Maria is tasked with running a survey of a large debris field surrounding the planet, hunting for clues as to the technological advancement. She doesn't get very far before the ship suddenly locks down, every console aboard displaying a Greek Omega symbol. After releasing the lockout, the captain abruptly re-tasks her to building a quantum resonance chamber with Hayley Caden. Upon completion, she finds herself thrown into escorting the enigmatic Venthian, Hawisa Alios, then taking her daughter, Azzo, on a brief tour of the Arrow that ends in Sickbay. Before long, Maria is ordered to the surface with Serinus, Ander, and Caden to find the Omega Particle and neutralize it. They nearly locate the particle in a southern city called Lowka when they're pinned down by enemy forces. Arrow barely manages to beam them and the particle out just in time, leaving Maria somewhat dazed as the particle is deposited in the closest black hole.

What Happens on Risa... (Shore Leave)

Maria is dragged into a book club by Quentin and Cassie, but manages to convince them to go on an adventure with her at the next available opportunity in return. While cleaning out a storage closet, Maria discovers an old Fleeter Still, and takes it to Shayne. She tries to convince him to keep the still, and they end up drunk and discussing a mysterious letter of the Captain's in the process, somehow bringing the two slightly closer to an understanding. Later, she throws a birthday bash on Risa, and convinces some fellow officers to dance at the club with her. At the awards ceremony, she's decorated with an Innovation Ribbon and a Captain's Commendation. She barely manages to catch up with Regan, who's decided it's time to take leave of Starfleet for a while, and says her goodbyes to her friend.

Freaky Friday

Arrow is put on a mission to strike a deal with the exacting Gentii. Angling for a spot on the away team, Maria dives head-first into researching the Gentii and their elaborate customs, finding a traditional called a "Bairiri" that blends festival and art exhibition. She proposes holding a Bairiri, and receives approval from Captain Shayne and Commander Collins. Upon arriving at Gentii II, however, her plans are thrown into chaos after a probe swaps around the crew's minds! Suddenly, she finds herself inhabiting the body of Quentin Collins, unsure of how to proceed when its clear the Gentii demand a live performance in the Bairiri. Initially, she tries to get Collins (in her body) to perform a dance, but instinct and muscle memory alone aren't enough to accomplish anything worthwhile. Time quickly runs out, and the Gentii delegation shows up demanding to see the show immediately. Fortunately, Collins manages to come up with the idea of singing a song he knows well, which goes okay and stalls the Bairiri for a little bit. Still, it's a far cry from what the delegation expected. Maria pulls Collins out of the performance, and begins to melt down emotionally, strongly experiencing the symptoms and confusion from the body swap and finding herself in a crisis of confidence. Just in time, Doctor Mason appears with neural collars, designed for assisting quad- and parapalegics, which will allow Maria to "pilot" her own body without waiting to be swapped back. The collar works spectacularly, at first, with an unexpected side-effect of entangling the pair's feelings and minds even more than they already were with the body swap. However, things quickly go awry as the body-swap begins deteriorating, and Collins is pulled into a liminal mind-space haunted by a man he knows as "Faraday." Maria is pulled along with him, and experiences a number of disturbing visions, involving her mind's interpretation of Faraday - a man calling himself "Fernandez." She ends up discovering a way out of the visions after realizing she's "stuck" on her failures from the past, and fear of future failures, which have most notably manifested themselves in visions of Maria's mother, Emilia. She asserts her control over her own mind, and destroys Fernandez, then finds Collins in their shared mind-space. Having seen a version of some of his memories, she realizes he's been running from his fears - much the same as hers. Together, they admit they have a lot of work to do, and finally become unstuck from their visions, allowing them to wake back up in sickbay in their own bodies - the rest of the crew figured out how to get everyone swapped back.

Shore Leave

With the first Bairiri on Arrow ending in disaster, the Gentii government allowed Maria and crew to host a Bairiri a little more than a week later on Genti II at a purpose-built hall inside their Federal District. Maria practices hard to put together a performance, but during preparation has a heart-to-heart with R'Ariel about the difficult visions she experienced, and the feelings they stirred up. R'Ariel encourages her to embrace the challenges in front of her, and reconnect more fully to her dance and artistry. Inspired, she doubles down on the efforts and dives head-first into putting together the Bairiri and her performance. She shares in some of the local cuisine with Serinus and DeBarres, and discusses the value of avant-garde art with a native Gentii Girl. She cheers on "Bad Maz" Rodan and Serinus in their performances on the main stage. Finally, she partners with a Gentii dancer, Eka, to put on a production of Stravinsky's Firebird; creating a memory she won't forget any time soon.

After the Bairiri is over, Arrow is off to Deep Space 3...

• Maria catches her roommate Chloe fussing over her hair on her way to meet R'Ariel. Remembering Chloe's admission of attraction to the counselor (however awkward), Maria encourages her to try on some casual clothes to help boost her confidence and maybe express her feelings to the counselor.
• Maria finishes clearing out space for Arrow's new holodeck, and goes shopping with Ander...
• Maria accidentally catches Shayne in his quarters with his new fiance, MacKenna. Surprised to see him so obviously romantically involved, she goes a little off the deep end...
• Maria and Quentin finally confront the nature of what they experienced together, and decide to embrace their unlikely bond...

At the end of shore leave, Maria is re-assigned the the USS Degault as an ambassadorial aide and operations manager for a new diplomatic mission with the Gentii. She is promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in recognition of her accomplishments and the new duties she will have.

Shore Leave 239810.24 and Return to the USS Arrow

Maria returns to the Arrow only two short months later aboard a shuttle craft that, to say the least, has seen better days. It turns out her early return is due to accidentally sparking a youth counter-culture movement on Genti II with the introduction of Earth ballet. Before Arrow heads back off on mission, she welcomes newcomer Ensign Jacin Ayemet aboard, reconnects with Cassandra Mason, and plays a well-meaning prank on Quentin Collins pretending to be her 80-year-old self from the future to announce her return.

Endless Night

Arrow encounters high-energy particles during a stellar survey, seriously damaging the ship's power systems. Maria proposes abandoning ship, and use a shuttle's Bussard collectors and plasma grid to purge and re-energize the ship's systems. She's ordered to join the shuttle team, along with Waters (accompanied by Mandy), Rodan, and then the late arrival, Ar'Gorvalei. The shuttle team spots Jacin's crashing escape pod. When they go after it, they're caught in a "subspace riptide" that crashes them nearby. Maria is the only one uninjured in the crash. After taking stock of their status, they discover Rodan's injuries are much worse than they seemed, and decide to risk using the shuttle's transporters to rejoin Ensign Jacin and the crashed pod. With his and Chloe's injuries, Maz implores Maria to ensure the safety of the crew crashed at the pod should something happen to him. Initially, Maria refuses vehemently, but after realizing his deteriorating state and how much she's needed, Maria resolves to face her fears and start working to solve the mystery of the "Midnight" planet's lights and pernicious fungal infections.
