Background
Lera was an infant when she survived a crash landing on new colony planet. The only surviving adults were her adoptive parents. She was raised by the Michaels who had only minimal knowledge of Vulcan ways. Lera and the Michaels were rescued seven years later having survived on crops grown from seeds they were able to salvage from the crashed ship. Lera first encountered a "normal" Vulcan at the age of 12 when it was decided that she was too old to begin a traditional Vulcan education. It struck everyone as logical impossibility that she could survive the Vulcan adulthood trial and would never be truly accepted in Vulcan society. Because of her deep bond with the Michaels and a host of other factors, it was decided the best situation would be to leave her with the Michaels.
The Michaels did their best to raise Lera as a Vulcan establishing a home in the American desert southwest and becoming vegetarians. They made Vulcan music and literature available in their household. Lera became obsessed as a teenager with all things Vulcan and mastered the language, though with an accent that no normal Vulcan could quite place, before entering the Academy. Like many Vulcans, she is vegetarian and extremely hesitant to kill any living creature. Despite her mastery of the language, her human upbringing has resulted in her being viewed as strange by most Vulcans.
Lera has no special physical abilities and intellectually above average in mathematics, the physical sciences and engineering. She was in the top third of her class at the Academy.
