Family

Background

Wil’s home has always been Fremantle in Australia, but he attended junior school in Beijing, the Oceanic Regional Middle School in Auckland, New Zealand, and the Dr. Andy Thomas Senior School in Sydney, Australia.

He is close to his mother Stacey, and from a young age wanted to join Starfleet to be like his Mother. Throughout his life, he spent much of his time pulling apart and putting back together all manner of technology and reverse engineering software systems, which is how he came to have a technical mind. He also spent a lot of time at his grandparent’s winery - he has a great relationship with them, especially with Astrad.

Before joining Starfleet Academy, Wil took a "gap year" (that ended up being almost two years), which is why he was slightly older than other cadets.

Family History

Wil's grandfather Astradem Ukinix was a Son of the Ninth House of Betazed. His parents Kirilow and Alacem stripped him of his title in 2341 after he refused betrothal to a Daughter of the Sixth House[2].

Astradem left Betazed for Earth to find and meet the woman he was in love with but had never met, Hayley Cullen, an Australian studying viticulture. Astradem changed his name to "Astrad", the childhood nickname used by his elder sisters to tease him. Hayley and Astrad married and moved to Australia to own and operate a winery in a rural community in the Barossa wine region. Astrad and Hayley had two children - Sally (female) and Anacem (male - Wil's father). Astrad and Hayley kept Astrad's former nobility a secret from their family and community.

Anacem studied Oenology, becoming a wine maker. Whilst in Fremantle on the night before a wine maker’s conference, Anacem met his future wife, Stacey Ukinix. Stacey was born in Melbourne, Australia but moved to Fremantle after she joined Starfleet as a tactical officer. Stacey and Anacem married quickly after their first meeting, and soon after had their first and only child, Wil.

Betazoid Ancestory

Wil on Betazed in 2396

Before starting with Starfleet, Wil had never been to Betazed. Unlike his half Betazoid father Anacem, Wil had some interest in Betazed and Betazoid Culture throughout his childhood years. However, after his onset of his strong empathic abilities, Wil became less curious about his Betazoid heritage, and much more focused on being human.

Being only one-quarter Betazoid, Wil looks human, and does not have black irises like his father or grandfather. While he knows that his being one-quarter Betazoid is on his personnel file, he is happy for people to think he is human. When he first joined Statfleet, he did not bring up his Betazoid heritage, unless prompted. However that changed during his Starfleet career and now does not shun his Betazoid side as much.

Whilst on shore leave and visiting his family on Earth in 2397, Sky Blake, whilst visiting Betazed, informed Wil of some gossip she had heard about the Ukinix name from Rivi Vataix[3][4]. Wil confronted Astrad about the gossip, causing him to discover that Astrad was originally named "Astradem", and was a noble of the Ninth House of Betazed - which Astrad had kept secret since his move to Earth[5].

Several months later, Wil received a written message from his second cousin Keehani Ral asking for assistance so that her mother Vaxa Ral could reclaim the title of Matriarch of the Ninth House. When Ghant Xerix joined the Veritas, Ghant's cousin Choupette was killed in a bombing in France. Wil decided to attend Choupette's funeral on Betazed to support his new crewmate. Whilst there, he met Keehani for the first time[6]. Keehani asked Wil for his and his family's assistance in her goal of restoring her grandmother's noble title, which Wil initially shunned as he did not trust Keehani. Their relationship became strained as a result.

In 2398, Keehani discovered through Wil's family that Wil was to be posted as First Officer and Starfleet attaché at Amity Outpost, headed by Ambassador Rivi Vataix. Keehani approached Rivi for a position on Amity which Rivi agreed to[7], much to Wil's eventual surprise[8]. Since that time, they have become closer and have formed a sibling-like relationship.

Inherited Empathic Abilities

There was nothing special or extraordinary about Wil's upbringing - until his teenage years. At age 16, Wil (like his grandfather) developed strong empathic abilities, which Wil struggled with, affecting his education. He received counselling from several Earth stationed Betazoids to help him cope, with limited success.

Just after he turned 17, his worried mother Stacey asked T'Rav, a fellow Starfleet officer from Vulcan who was temporarily stationed on Earth, to counsel him. Wil received several counselling sessions from T'Rav, which helped him immensely.

Wil considers the empathic part of his heritage as a burden, but has grown accustomed to it as "just being there". Given his human appearance, having empathic abilities is something he keeps to himself and only discusses with close friends and family.

His empathic abilities can cause some nervousness in Wil, and he is not sure the human part of him is equipped to deal with it - even after his extensive counselling in his late teens, and no medical evidence to support his theory.

Wil has no telepathic abilities.

Relationships

Roshanara Rahman

Roshanara Rahman was Wil's first Captain when first joining the USS Veritas, until it's refit in 2398. In his eyes she was a model Starfleet officer, one that he was proud to be serving under. He got to know Roshanara better when they shared a shuttle to Betazed to assist the local authorities in the investigation of a local terrorist attack. At the end of the investigation, Roshanara gave Wil personal advice to "go out there and just have fun".

Jansen Orrey

Jansen Orrey was a counsellor aboard the USS Veritas for most of Wil's posting, and became an important friend and mentor to him. Wil was fortunate enough to be chosen as best man at Jansen and Raissa Moonsong's wedding.

Geoffrey Teller

Geoffrey Teller was been Wil's Chief of Engineering when he joined the the USS Veritas. Even though both of them were Ensigns when Wil first joined, Wil greatly respected Geoffrey's position as his Chief, and relied on his leadership. Wil cemented his friendship with Geoffrey while marooned on Limbo, and was proud of him when he got promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. While Wil jokes about Geoffrey's love for sea shanties as much as the other Veritas crew members did, Wil enjoys hearing Geoffrey sing them, because he knows it means Geoffrey's in a good mood. Wil does however also find it amusing when Teller is in a grumpy mood, and enjoys being cheeky towards him to cheer him up.

Niccolò del Vedova

While Wil was aware of Niccolò del Vedova, it wasn't until after 119 days on marooned Limbo that he finally met Del. When Wil realised that Del was also from Australia, he felt as though part of his home was with him, even though he was literally light years from Earth.

Music Interests

When he was 16, one of the Betazoid counsellors had told him to try to appreciate the emotions expressed in art. Ultimately, he discovered music of his native Earth of the mid-20th to early 21st century.[9] Not only was he surprised there was so much of it and of many different genres he'd never heard of, he also found a lot of it conveyed raw emotions. At first, he thought most of the music of that time was poor quality, but he kept going back to it - and eventually acquired a taste for a lot of it.

Over the years since his late teens, Wil amassed an eclectic collection of 20th and 21st century Earth songs that he liked. When leaving Earth to start his first Starfleet assignment on the USS Veritas, he took a copy of his collection on a PADD that he "acquired" from the Academy. Those songs were transferred to his personal storage space on the ship's computer. Whenever he is working in a Jeffries tube (especially on his own), he usually plays a song from his collection through a PADD, to break the silence.

Events that occur to Wil after he graduated from Starfleet Academy remind him of specific songs for various reasons. Since joining the Veritas, Wil has found himself singing more than he ever did before in his life.

Personality

Wil has a wicked, cheeky sense of humour. He likes to make fun in most situations, in a fun and friendly type of way. If there is an intense situation where people around him are feeling strong emotions, it can affect him by making him grumpy.

Quirks

  • Wil seems to always get lost on Deck Four of his assigned ship, the USS Veritas, and secretly jokes that the Temporal Integrity Commission are constantly changing the deck layout on him for their own amusement.[10][11]
  • Whenever working in a Jeffries Tube, he likes to listen to music from his collection.
  • When initially annoyed or frustrated at something, he has been known to let out a line of "colourful" language.
  • He has a habit of acquiring and then subsequently losing PADDs that have been assigned to the Engineering department.
  • Can never remember the name of the Captain that led the five-year mission from 2265-2270 on the USS Enterprise

Here Kitty Kitty 239801 While the Battle of the Bands is underway on the idyllic farming community of Donova IV, the criminal organization known as the Cobalt Clan which runs the colony behind the scenes uses the musical event as a front for the illegal exotic animal trade. Animal rights activist Maria Chicchoni is on a mission to put a stop to the trade, with her top nemesis being Gorgeous George, a rock star and showman who uses exotic animals, particularly big cats, in his shows. However, Chicchoni’s methods are even more ruthless than the cats she’s trying to save. 21. Here Kitty Kitty Playlist
Wil volunteers to be band manager for "Glasgow Kiss", the band formed by fellow members of the Veritas crew to participate in Donova IV's battle of the bands. After becoming smitten with the Andorian competition organiser (who happens to be the head of the Cobalt Clan) during the band's rehearsal, he has to confront loyal Maria Chicchoni protesters at the Donova IV Convention Centre who are protesting against Gorgeous George. Days later, at the backstage party before the competition, he is incensed when he sees Gorgeous George with a cute Quokka, and effectively steals it from him - much to the dismay of his crewmates, and the regret of Wil. He operates the sound booth when Glasgow Kiss take to the stage, and is chased by three large Nausicaans at the end of the gig demanding the Quokka. Wil is back on Veritas when Gorgeous George takes the stage, but beams back to the planet when two of George's tigers leave the stage and start attacking his audience.

  • Has recurring right ankle soreness due to an injury from football training at age 17.
  • In stressful situations with other people, is prone to blurred vision and seeing "fields" around people, due to his empathic nature. In most cases, this causes him to suffer from a migraine headache, and can lead to exhaustion. He can also sometimes suffer mood swings in these situations[12].
  • Very slight discolouration on the skin on his shoulder due to a burn mark from a burst of energy from an AI controlled prong that embedded itself in the USS Veritas.
  • Has a small letter "g" tattooed on his left ankle (removed).
  • Allergic to goldfish [13]
  • Is otherwise fit and healthy.
