Backstory

On the windy Falkland Islands of Earth in the April of 2339, Doz was born to parents Iris and Frederick Finch, and was not only the last child of four, but also the scrawniest.

Life out in the Falklands was blissful, though for much of it her father Frederick worked away for Starfleet on various assignments as an engineer. Their mother Iris kept busy as a specialist petrologist with her studies on the topography of the Falklands, an area well known for its rugged terrain and cliff-lined coasts. Both of her parents originated from the West Midlands region of England, though had moved to the islands in order for Iris to pursue her work. Her pregnancy was quite unexpected and was the main reason they all remained on the island for many years.

In the absence of their father, Doz's brothers turned their small home into a place of electrical wonder. Mechanical contraptions and devices of all variations poked out of the crevices of every room, including a myriad of constantly breaking down robots, something she always found greatly entertaining. Though during her younger years, although she herself managed to absorb a lot of the engineering tips and tricks her brothers had imparted onto her, she didn't really see herself pursuing it as a career.

Although life in the Falklands was dreamy, the Finch's would soon discover that they would be set to move to Mars, to live with Frederick during his latest and potentially final assignment from Starfleet. This idea however was shattered just as soon as it had been found out, as her father barely a day later perished in an accident in space.[1]

The aftermath changed everything; Iris, once a sprightly woman, became steeped in depression and agoraphobia, unable to speak to anyone, look after herself or be a parent to her growing children.[2] It was decided therefore that they would all relocate to Birmingham, in England, to be closer to other family members. Life in Birmingham had its pros; she met Murve Norström, the funny scandinavian friend of her brother Wallace, who she struck an instant bond with. The parties in local parks, and the sunsets. [3] But as with pros, there also came cons, and the biggest of all was her deteriorating mother, and her brothers general disinterest in the issue.

Frustrated by her brothers and their unwillingness to help with their deeply miserable mother, her relationship with each of them strained — even with Wallace, whose parting advise to her ended up planting the seed of her escape. In the absence of Ernie, Arthur and Wallace, Doz stayed busy by learning how to maintain and fix all of the machines and inventions that they had created and installed throughout the family home, eventually lending her hand to those in the neighborhood. Whether technology, or engines or computers, she became, along with Murve who she had lovingly nicknamed Murphy, something of a self-taught technician.

Starfleet Career

At roughly twenty years old, Finch took it upon herself to apply for the Martian Starfleet Technical Services Academy, greatly encouraged by her best friend Murve Norström, lovingly nicknamed Murphy, who believed that she had more talent in engineering than "all three of her brothers put together". Having waited for her to do so, the pair of them set off for the academy, later taking part in its intensive programme that covered a variety of subjects from checking, repairing and servicing starships to the more fiddly arts of reprogramming and reconfiguring computers and their many parts. The abridged programme also involved a myriad of electrical, mechanical, chemical, radiological and nuclear damage scenarios, and the difficulty of it was not lost on Finch who had for so many years done "her own sort of engineering". Upon graduation, she pursued roles in maintenance whereas Murphy preferred electrical ones.

They both shared their first tour of duty aboard the USS Bonestell, serving under a cantankerous Chief Engineer who often separated the two, and liked to punish Finch by having her do maintenance work on the outer hull of the ship. Despite this however, his repeated punishments actually instilled within her an appreciation for spacewalking, which has remained one of her favourite things to do ever since. Her career as an enlisted officer spanned seven ships over forty years —— the last of which was spent on the notorious Intrepid Class starship USS Marigold.

Having reunited with Murphy during this posting, she was quite satisfied with her life until an unexpected disaster resulted in his death. As if history had repeated itself, she was flung into panic, terrified of the way she felt and her reaction to his death, and the all too real possibility of her becoming "like her mother", who had died decades prior. Desperate to distract herself, she asked Captain Koth of the Marigold if she could change her mind about an offer of academy sponsorship that she had declined many times before.

After graduating the Officer Candidate School, she was reassigned to the USS Gorkon, ironically not far from the Marigolds theatre of operation.

KOTH.jpg.jpg

Captain Koth Th’shrysrir
Captain of the USS Marigold and Finch's Officer Candidate Sponsor

Crotchety, irritable, and a bit of a loner, Captain Koth was the Andorian Commanding Officer of the Marigold, and Finch's official Officer Candidate School sponsor. Known for his back-seat approach and general avoidance of the affairs of his crew, he became rather unpopular after promoting Lieutenant Gepe Grasa, the mean-spirited Chief Tactical Officer, into the temporary position of Acting First Officer, allowing her the unmitigated freedom to do whatever she wanted. Despite this however, he enjoyed a personal rapport with both Finch and her best friend Murphy, and on occassion invited them to dine with him.

Gepe Grasa (gepp-EE-GRAH-seh)
Acting First Officer USS Marigold

Ruthless, egotistical, and a staunch disciplinarian, Gepe Grasa was the Bajoran Chief Tactical Officer and later Acting First Officer of the Marigold who often liked to bully the crew. She was once a member of the Bajoran Militia until her transfer to Starfleet. Despite her usual horribleness, she was vaguely interested in Finch's "usefulness" and so mostly left her alone.

HEEZA.jpg

Lieutenant Zeeza (zee-ZEH)
Chief Engineer of the USS Marigold

Airy, analytical, smart, and yet charming, Zeeza was the Denobulan Chief Engineer of the Marigold, whose friendly but self-contained personality made her a highly trusted engineer, and an even greater friend. During one of many incidents on the notorious Marigold, she was able to combine her expertise in energetics and shields harmonics with Finch's prevailing knowledge of the ship's inner configuration, reducing the impact of a massive solar flare, and pulling repairs down from a few weeks to just a few days.

USS Gorkon
Individual Status Details
Gnaxac Engineer & Colleague One of the first Engineers that Doz encountered on the Gorkon.
Alieth Chief Science Officer They met during a terrifying escape from the "Rogue Planet", and through a mishap of communications, Doz wound up with the temporary nickname "Boz Binch".
Megan Bendyn Operations Officer Distracted by the thoughts of her late friend Murphy, Doz found herself in a conundrum in which she was unable to make basic repairs to a box of burnt circuits. Having met Meg in the Brew Continuum, a conversation flowed, as well as her help, and through it Doz was able to focus and get the work done.
T'Lar Counsellor A chance encounter in the Brew Continuum left Doz feeling rather amused and amazed by the Vulcan's almost Human sense of humour.
Tahna Meru Science Officer Theirs was a meeting that was more complicated than is usual for Starfleet Officers; hurled into the shared "Skarbek" dream by an unusual nebula, Doz and Tahna knew each other as "Gramma" and "Lark", and through a psychologically challenging mission in which they often had to rely on one another, despite an initial lack of trust, they ultimately survived.
Vylaa zh'Tisav Engineer & Colleague After the "Skarbek" nebula fiasco ended, Doz, Vylaa and a handful of other engineers became more acquainted over a game of cards in the Lower Shuttlebay Maintenance and Support room.
Samira Neathler First Officer On a power-walk that led to a marketplace venture that led to a casino jaunt, Doz and Samira bonded in the balmy air of Bajor, and a drink or three.
Tali Namura Doctor They first met during Doz's initial check up, and later during a casino jaunt on Bajor with Samira Neathler. Doz thinks she's secretly "off her head", but likes her because she hasn't condemned her tea-intake like previous doctors did.
Erin Reynolds Chief Engineer Another "chance encounter" situation in which Doz and Erin enjoyed tea in the company of the Chief's many well-watered plants. Although polar opposites, their unusual dynamic works.

However, as an ex-convict, cold and sometimes unfeeling, achieving such a feat came with many challenges. Ultimately, her biggest contribution was the suggestion of stealing a shuttle and using it to their advance, which they later did and with great success.
