Player Profile

  • Name: Keegan (he/they/she)
  • OOC Rank: Lieutenant Commander
  • OOC Role: First Officer, Amity Outpost
  • Writer ID: V239806K11

Hey there! I'm Keegan, and my primary character is Lt. Cmdr Robin Hopper - Chief Science Officer and Second Officer of Amity Outpost. I also have a menagerie of oddball PNPCs and side characters, all of whom I love dearly. When I first joined SB118, my primary character (and the namesake of my username) was Kivik - now a PNPC and the Chief Science Officer aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.

I'm from Vancouver, on Canada's West Coast, and have somehow managed to stick out living there to this day (though wooo is it ever getting expensive!) I was first introduced to Star Trek at a young age, watching re-runs of The Next Generation with my dad. At the time, I didn't really understand a lot of what I was watching (I even called the show "Saturn" because of the ringed planet in the show's intro). Growing up, we continued watching Trek as a family and I was much more engaged with Voyager and Enterprise. Nowadays, I dearly love Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, and tolerate the other shows with the type of good-natured love one has for family members that rub you the wrong way occasionally. I'm currently in the thick of a full watch-through of Deep Space Nine (which, until recently, had remained a pretty blatant 'blind spot' in my Trek knowledge).

I'm also a big fan of other sci fi franchises, like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Alien(s), and fantasy, such as Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice & Fire / Game of Thrones, and so on. I've been roleplaying since I was about 12 years old, starting with forum-based RPs based on Lord of the Rings and Diablo - but got properly introduced to TTRPGS in high school with World of Darkness and Vampire: The Requiem. I tried Dungeons and Dragons for the first time properly as an adult and began DMing my own campaign during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

My approach to roleplaying here are to focus exploring characters as complex and diverse people first, and exploring their job / duty post second. I often take a lot of inspiration from IRL sources (myself / my own experiences, people I know, or even the face claims of the characters) and generally try to imagine I'm writing a real Trek show for real actors to play in. I'm also interested in using roleplay as a way to gain additional perspective on diverse identities and character traits as well as developing and 'grounding' world and species development. You can check out my Lower Decks Interview (from when my Primary Character was Kivik) to learn more about me and my goals at that time.

Characters

Primary Character - Lt. Commander Robin Hopper

Lt. Commander Robin Hopper is a Human/Centauran woman serving as First Officer aboard Amity Outpost.

Hopper was born and raised on Theta VII - and old Frontier Colony world near the former Romulan/Federation Neutral Zone first developed under the "small town" model popularized in the early-to-mid 2200s. The colony, initially focused on essential mineral extraction (ore mining) and agricultural supply chain support (farming), quickly blossomed as a hub for travelling traders and Starfleet vessels in need of repairs and has since grown into a world of sufficient scale to achieve Federation Membership status.

She grew up on her parents' hydroponics-based farm not far from the planetary capital, Port Hibbing, where they specialized in growing high-yield crops such as soybeans. Following her secondary school graduation, Robin relocated to Earth to attend the University of California, Berkeley - graduating with a Masters in Physics. Applying to Starfleet on a whim (in fact, a drunken dare) she was pleasantly surprised to receive a letter of admission and quickly accepted, relocating to San Francisco and completing her Doctorate in Physics while also completing her Academy graduation requirements. She graduated Starfleet Academy with the unusual distinction of being commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, rather than Ensign.

Hopper's first posting was aboard the USS Wall Street, an Oracle Class deep space science vessel, where she served as a Computer Science Officer and, later, Assistant Chief Science Officer under Lt. Trisha Montgomery. In 2399 Montgomery informed her of an opening on the far-flung Amity Outpost and, drawn by her interest in frontier exploration and her childhood obsession with the Voyager mission, Hopper put her name forward with her superior officer's recommendation. She would transfer to Amity that year as the station's first Starfleet Chief Science Officer.

Her time aboard Amity has been eventful, to say the least, and formative in her development from scientist to leader to prospective Commander. From bumping elbows with the Betazoid Nobility, to squaring off with the Hirogen, to meeting her Universe counterpart (Raven Hopper), to facing the Borg Queen during the Frontier Day incident, there hasn't been a dull moment. There have also been unexpected changes in her personal life as well; Typically a somewhat flighty person, driven by a sense of adventure and career aspirations, Robin has surprised herself with a desire to stay and even begin to put down some roots in the Delta Quadrant - turning down an offer to serve as First Officer aboard the USS Cambridge to remain on Amity - putting her relationships with her colleagues and her sense of duty to the Outpost's mission ahead of her own ambitions.

Now holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Hopper has served as the station's Second Officer for over a year; With a number of changes to the station's role and its leadership structure in 2402, Robin has been selected as the Outpost's First Officer under Commanding Officer Wil Ukinix. 2402 should prove to be one of the most eventful years yet for Robin, given her engagement to Amity's new Second Officer, and it's Chief of Operations, Nathan Richards, with the two expected to 'tie the knot' in the summertime.

"Amity Outpost is supposed to be a station with 2,245 people, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Keegan, Kivik's writer, someday ends up writing for half of them."

There are also a handful of what I would consider "side characters" I involve on a recurring basis, but whom aren't full-fledged PNPCs as far as I'm concerned. Characters like the Matriarch of the Twentieth House of Betazed, Seri Polgonz, or the relatable criminal clerk, Aaris Idar, the Hawlat Luminary, Prarim, and the aged Hirogen Alpha, Acherax.

Activities & Badges (OOC)

"This year I would like to give a commendation to Keegan, the writer behind Kivik/Robin Hopper. He has been one of the most reliable people in image production, a continuous source of inspiration and information, always looking for new techniques and sharing them with wilfulness and passion. On an artistic level, he has made several of my favourite images this year and I have seen him improve image by image and grow as an artist by leaps and bounds. Not only that, but his presence has been a continuous source of optimism, encouragement, and enthusiasm and embodies many of the best skills and characteristics that a drone in the collective (and an artist) should have. The image collective is better off having him with us!"

Player Awards (OOC)

"The multiple nominations Keegan, the player behind Robin Hopper, received for this award all cite his tireless dedication to “engage with anyone and help anyone,” particularly when it comes to Keegan’s involvement with the Training Team, Image Collective, and the wiki as a wiki administrator and member of the Wiki Ops squadron. His involvement with these three areas of our community in particular means that he’s often called upon to help assist those who are just starting out with our community, from brand new members learning how to sim in the Academy or junior officers beginning to expand their wiki character pages beyond the basics. Keegan’s graphics work for character avatars and other images is renown.

Not only is the quality of Keegan’s work well-known to those across the fleet, it serves as a shining beacon to inspire others. As one nominator put it, “When I first joined, I wasn't certain that the request that I would be making for my character image would even be *possible*, but almost as soon as I had posted it in the forums, [he] hopped on and offered to take on the challenge. I was blown away by how good my character's portrait looked, as well as how fast they were able to make it! And every other image I've seen him make for others (or for himself/his own characters) on the wiki and elsewhere has similarly blown my mind, both in terms of quality and speed of response. [He’s] someone that I look up to immensely regarding photoshop/image manipulation skills, and someone that I've found to be endlessly open to discussion about said things. [...] Keegan has created so many innovative and aesthetically pleasing pages, templates, [and] what-have-you on the wiki, and his work has been a major inspiration for my own fiddling around with character page layouts.”

For being a constant and supporting presence in our community, it is my pleasure to present Keegan with this year’s Northern Star Award. Thank you for helping all of our members, from the newest cadets to our seasoned staff, and being a big part of what makes the StarBase 118 RPG community special."
