Personality

Personality Type: ENFJ (Extraverted Intuitive Feeling Judging)

Manners

  • Mannerisms: Very early in life Anath tried to keep her emotional expressions hidden entirely with regular meditations and study. Currently she uses daily meditations to limit the volatility of her emotions but doesn't work to proactively repress any expression or feeling. While she may still claim to be more Vulcan than Klingon she has abandoned the outward coldness and stoicism that many people expect of vulcans.
  • Routines: Every night before bed, Anath enjoys a cup of Chamomile tea and reads a section from whatever book she is in the middle of reading (time permitting). Each month she likes to focus on literature from a different culture during her evening reading time. She reads a less complicated book with her nephew Rol'Q each night. When all three members of the family are in their quarters together, she likes to have everyone meditate as a family.
  • Speech Patterns: While Anath is able to disguise her emotions and keep them from bleeding through her voice, she rarely goes through the effort of trying to hide her feelings.
  • Carriage and Posture: Always walks with purpose and sits with her back perfectly straight for the most part, but will relax her posture in a casual atmosphere or when she is in an environment she finds to be relaxing.

Likes and Dislikes

  • Favorite Book: A Cave Beyond Logic, by Ti’Kann
  • Favorite Color: Yellow
  • Favorite Food: Vulcan Pok tar
  • Hobbies: Reading, Mok'bara, baseball, chess
  • Fears: Abandonment, illnesses affecting family and friends, the Hur'q (Frequent source of childhood nightmares)
  • Pet Peeves: Inefficiencies, uncooperative technology

Quarters and Workspaces

  • Quarters: Anath has quarters on Deck 12 of the USS Constitution-B. Anath prefers to keep her living quarters neat and tidy. Her wardrobe and personal belongings are well-sorted. Anath stores some family photos and a small collection of medical textbooks on a bookshelf in their quarters. Some of her books include Comparative Alien Physiology, Handbook of Exobiology, Gray's Anatomy, and an article she featured in from the Starfleet Medical Journals.
  • Sickbay: Whenever she is on duty, Anath likes to leave the primary sickbay facility better than she found it. Whenever there is a slow moment, she is organizing equipment, sterilizing surfaces, or generally straightening up.

Prized Possessions

  • Anath’s d’k tahg: One of Anath’s connections to her Klingon heritage. Anath has a d’k tahg emblazoned with the crest of the House of Qu’Voq. It is checked in with security and kept secured in her bedroom dresser drawer.
  • Starfleet Medical Journals, 2394, Volume 321, No. 1: Anath has a collection of medical texts in her quarters, one of her favorites being a copy of a volume of the Starfleet Medical Journals that she featured in as an author.
  • Starfleet Medical Academy Diploma: Anath’s diploma from Starfleet Medical Academy, awarded upon her graduation in 2394.
  • Meditation Lamp: The Vulcan meditation lamp is decorated with half Vulcan script and half Klingon script, reflective of Anath’s dual heritage. It is her second meditation lamp after the first was given as a gift to a friend.
  • Bajoran Reliquary: A wedding gift from Kano Risha. It is an engraved wooden box given as a traditional wedding gift to Bajoran couples that holds earrings intended for their children. Anath and Savok use the box to hold their written vows.
  • Mok’bara Uniform: Anath has a hand-sewn Mok’bara uniform she bought on a trip to Qo’noS.
  • Baseball Glove: This baseball glove has been with Anath since she took up playing baseball at Starfleet Academy. She always looks forward to any opportunities to break out the glove and use it.

History

Family Background

Anath G’Renn is the middle child of Lyras and T’Shol G’Renn. Lyras is a geneticist and a neuroscience expert for the Vulcan Biology Institute. Her parents, T'Sil and Valsur, had two other children. Lyras' sister T'lain is a member of the Vulcan government. T'lain is married and has one son. Lyras' brother Strennel is a Starfleet science officer working in research and development. She attended the Vulcan Science Academy and hoped that her children would follow in her footsteps as scientists.

T’Shol, Son of Rartoll is a former field medic for the Klingon Defense Force and a member of the House of Qu'Voq. He is Rartoll and Rhila's second child, after his older brother O'Trel. A disguised anti-personnel mine exploded, requiring that his left leg be amputated. He was subsequently drummed out of the KDF and left to find a new career. With the limited positions for a doctor in Klingon society, T'Shol immigrated to the Federation and took up residence on Earth for several years. During this time he Federationized his name. For a last name, T'Shol adopted the name of his grandmother Colonel G'Renn to honor her. This last name would also be passed on to his children.

T'Shol G'Renn and Lyras first met during a biochemistry symposium hosted by the Vulcan Biology Institute, and the unusual sight of a Klingon dedicated to medicine was intriguing to Lyras. The couple married several years later. The couple's first child, Anath's sister Jolash, was born three years into their marriage. Anath was born two years later and their brother Avarak four years after that. The family has a home in T'Paal City on Vulcan, where Lyras works. T'Shol G'Renn moved to Vulcan and took up work as a civilian family medicine doctor working on Vulcan.

Childhood

Anath attended the public schools in T'Paal City along with her siblings, and has very fond memories of her earliest years. She enjoyed listening to her father's stories about his struggle for acceptance in the Klingon military as a medic, exploring the area around her home, caring for two pet sehlats, and playing chess. During these early years her closest friends were a human girl named Alexa Kennedy, her siblings Jolash and Avarak, and Savok. Alexa Kennedy brought Anath out of the Vulcan shell she had been adopting and helped lead Anath in to all manners of trouble. Both of the girls were almost removed from the Syrran Learning Center for their disruptive behavior.

Anath G'Renn as a child.

The G'Renn household was at times chaotic and divided among "Vulcans" and "Klingons". Anath's older sister Jolash took after T'Shol and exhibited many Klingon characteristics. Meanwhile Anath had become a vegetarian and often emulated her mother's mannerisms. These conflicting character traits would often lead to arguments between the sisters. Angry arguments and sparring matches were common. Avarak was a happy medium between the two and was Anath's favorite sibling.

December of 2380, the G'Renn family took a trip to Terra Nova and explored the once-desolate human colony world. During the fourth day of their trip, Avarak fell ill with an unknown infection and was rushed to a medical center. He died a few days later, with his siblings and parents separated from him by a containment force field. This incident left Anath especially upset, living in her room and rarely emerging or interacting with her family members for almost two months. Her brother's death was the initial catalyst for her considering a career in medicine. She never wanted to see anything like what befell Avarak happen again. Anath focused more and more on her academics after her brother's death, hoping to apply for and be accepted into Starfleet Academy to become a doctor and help those in need.

The years after Avarak's death were marked by a substantial increase in Anath's focus on her academic career. She selected more challenging classes and worked with other students like Savok in areas of study she struggled with. Once she completed her preliminary education, Anath applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted along with Alexa Kennedy. Months earlier she had learned of the marriage that her mother had arranged between her and Savok. Anath felt conflicted over her lack of choice in the matter and left the matter unresolved before departing for Earth.

Starfleet Academy

Cadet G'Renn at Starfleet Academy.

At Starfleet Academy Anath was relieved to learn that her roommate was Alexa Kennedy, who helped her adjust to life on Earth. Alexa Kennedy also introduced her to some human culture, specifically baseball. She took a strong liking to the sport and became a big fan of the game. However, not all of her Academy experiences were as cheerful. Her Klingon temper made some enemies, and her unique physiology made typical emotional repression techniques for Vulcans ineffective. Despite the struggle of maintaining composure, she passed her exams and received an undergraduate degree in xenology with a minor in psychology.

Medical school was a much better experience for Anath. She specialized in pediatric medicine and performed very well in her classes. During her spare time she helped found a recreational baseball team with several other students. Several negative experiences with Professor Roger Thorston at the beginning of her senior year led to mandatory counseling sessions. Despite that setback, she graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.85 and received her doctorate of medicine.

After completing medical school Anath was sent to Starbase 118 for her cadet cruise. She passed with flying colors and, after a farewell to her family, left for the Par'tha Expanse the next day to report to her first assignment.

Andaris Task Force

Upon arrival aboard the USS Blackwell, Anath began serving as a medical officer alongside Jora Kalis and under the authority of the ship's chief medical officer, Graeme Cook. She was present for the emergency triage and subsequent disaster relief efforts on Kiros, helped cure a plague on Debin VII, and helped evacuate Deck 11 of the Blackwell along with Krindo Pandorn and Kalara Avran during the ship's encounter with a Taventa Robotics minefield. During this time she made connections among the crew of the task force including Jarred Thoran, Morin, and Ferentis. Anath was also promoted to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) following the events of the mission on Debin VII.

Anath's transition into a leadership role in sickbay began when the Blackwell encountered a telepathic virus. With Doctor Cook gone and current chief medical officer Isabel Pond unavailable, Anath became the ranking medical officer in charge of sickbay until being incapacitated by the virus. She would later make a full recovery and was promoted to Lieutenant and chief medical officer of the Blackwell during the departure of Captain Zaekia and Theo Whittaker taking command. Anath was present on Arndall to witness the return of the Hur'Q and invented the sonic weapon that drove them back underground. She was on the away team sent back in time on P-409 Sigma and was involved in the evacuation and eventual destruction of the Columbia-class Forthwith. She was also reunited with childhood friend and betrothed Savok, who arrived on board as a civil in researcher on assignment from the Vulcan Science Academy in May of 2395.

USS Columbia

Anath and Savok at their wedding aboard the USS Columbia.

When the crew of the Blackwell was transferred to the USS Columbia Anath was made the ship's chief medical officer. She led her first away team during the search for Captain Whittaker. In late 2395, Anath was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and it was announced that she had also been made the ship's new second officer with the departure of Randal Shayne leaving the post vacant. She served aboard the Columbia as chief medical officer for the entirety of Theo Whittaker's tenure as captain of the ship and was joined on the ship by her betrothed Savok. The two of them were married aboard the Columbia on Stardate 239609.07.

During her time as chief medical officer and second officer, Anath further developed her skills in sickbay leadership. She developed friendships with many longtime sickbay staff members and worked with several new medical officers who arrived on the Columbia including Saden Lor and Nali Talia. Anath also continued studying the telepathic virus the USS Blackwell discovered as a personal research project. She also played a supporting role in the battle with and hunt for Tarius Kaironn. A later incident saw Anath as acting captain of the Columbia during an emergency in Captain Whittaker's absence. Anath was also taken prisoner, seriously wounded, and briefly presumed dead during her tenure as the CMO of the Columbia.

Transfers and Return to the Par'tha Expanse

The mission of the USS Columbia was cut short a month after Anath and Savok's wedding and the ship was recalled by Starfleet Command in October of 2396. Initially, Anath was transferred to the USS Astraeus as their chief medical officer. This assignment would prove to be very short-lived. She served on the Astraeus for less than a month before that ship's mission was also cut short and she was sent into administrative limbo once again. While frustrated by the repeated reassignments across the Alpha Quadrant, Anath's second reassignment brought her back to the same place her Starfleet career began. Anath was made the new chief medical officer of the USS Atlantis under the command of her good friend Jarred Thoran.

She arrived aboard the ship in the aftermath of Deep Space 26's arrival in the Paldor system. Anath also encountered another familiar face from the Andaris Task Force and began settling in to her new post. Savok, as with the move to the Astraeus, accompanied her to the new ship and continues his work as a civilian researcher in the Par'tha Expanse. This was Anath's new normal for several months until she and Savok took long overdue personal leave to return home to Vulcan. Their visit was interrupted on Stardate 239708.05 by the news that Jolash G'Renn and her husband had disappeared, along with the transport ship, the Star Lily, that they were travelling on. Anath's visit home of a few weeks extended into months as she eagerly waited for any news on the search. Starfleet eventually discontinued the search and declared that the ship was destroyed by a warp core breach. Anath and Savok became the guardians of Anath's nephew, Rol'Q. This was quickly followed by a request that Anath return to Starfleet service as the chief medical officer of the USS Chin'toka.

Starfleet Medical Academy

Anath's tenure as chief medical officer of the USS Chin'toka would only last a few months. In that time, Anath was troubled by how to approach the new arrangement of Rol'Q living with them. All of the evidence pointed to a warp core breach aboard the Star Lily. But she took her time disclosing that information to her nephew. The dangers of being in the Par'tha Expanse weighed on her mind and she quietly sent a request to Starfleet Medical asking to be transferred. A position was available at Starfleet Medical Academy and she accepted it. The family moved to Earth and found a new routine. Savok's exchange program with the Vulcan Science Academy transferred from Starfleet to Cambridge University and Rol'Q was enrolled in a primary school in San Francisco. At the medical academy, Anath took over teaching both MED202: Diagnosis and MED301: Surgery classes covering Klingons.

Teaching did not come naturally at first. Her time as a chief medical officer for starships had grown a focus on the daily administration of sickbays and managing a staff of medical officers who already had their education. Now she had papers to grade and inexperienced cadets to instruct in the basics of medicine. Savok provided some advice on teaching from his time as a professor and Anath dropped by the office of a few old professors for guidance. After her first semester she was asked to meet with Dr. Cole Anderson at Starfleet Medical headquarters. He appreciated her concern for the safety of serving on a starship. However, he was concerned that teaching was not a task that her skills were geared towards. He asked her to consider a new assignment back on a starship and not in a classroom where she wasn't comfortable if she wished to remain in Starfleet. She and Savok discussed the option and whether to bring Rol'Q with them if she transferred again. They ultimately decided that their nephew had been through enough disruption in environment without a change in guardianship as well. Anath was not open to leaving Rol'Q behind after finally telling him what happened to his parents and accepting that she was his caretaker. However, scheduling conflicts and logistics meant that Savok and Rol'Q remained on Earth for a short time while Anath travelled to her new assignment on the USS Constitution-B alone, to be joined by her family later.

Relationships

See full family background here.

Savok
Husband

Savok is the child of one of Lyras’ biologist co-workers. The two would often spend time together, and he helped Anath with her studies in botany. As well as being Anath's friend, the two were betrothed as children in the Vulcan tradition. The two of them eventually decided to get married, and their wedding was on Stardate 239609.07. Savok now serves as a civilian researcher on the USS Atlantis.

T'Shol G'Renn
Father

While certainly a Vulcan behaviorally, Anath has never forgotten what she has inherited from her father and often reflects upon his old Klingon sayings and stories of being a field medic.

Lyras
Mother

Anath's relationship with her mother is very strong, despite Anath being forced to provide enough emotional investment for them both. Anath adopted many of her mother's habits that her siblings did not, such as her early adoption of vegetarianism. Lyras can find empathizing with her emotionally turbulent daughter difficult, but she has adapted as best she can.

Jolash G'Renn
Sister

The relationship between Jolash and her little sister Anath has always been a complicated dynamic, with several high and low points throughout their lives. However, the two siblings have always managed to put aside whatever differences are plaguing them when one needs the other. Jolash G'Renn is currently missing and presumed dead when the ship she and her husband were on disappeared. The ship and all its passengers are presumed dead.

Avarak G'Renn
Brother

Avarak was the closer of Anath's two siblings and was her closest friend and confidant during her early life. His death on a family trip still haunts Anath and was the driving force in her decision to pursue a career in medicine.

Rol'Q
Nephew

Anath is very fond of her sister's only child, Rol'Q. She enjoys watching his curiosity about the world around him grow and often made a point of returning home as much to see him as to see her parents and sister, if not even more so for Rol'Q. After the disappearance of his parents, Anath and Savok became Rol'Q's guardians.

Rartoll
Grandfather

Anath and her grandfather have a complicated relationship. Rartoll did love her just like his other grandchildren, but he was always trying to subtly push her in a more Klingon direction. They would often see each other during family trips to Qo'noS. He was a freighter captain and would occasionally allow Anath's family to join them on a cargo run. This meant that Anath is also familiar with the crew of the SS Kajunpak't.

T'pril
Sister-in-Law

T'pril is the younger sister of Savok. She was born a few years after the Dominion War, born in January of 2378. She has studied the V’tosh ka’tur and Vulcan emotional repression practices, and does not follow the traditional interpretation of the Teachings or Surak. She is a gifted musician and was recently accepted into the Aldebaran Music Academy. Anath would sometimes help watch T'pril when she was a toddler and always encouraged her interest in music. The two are now sisters-in-law and regularly write letters to each other.

Alexa Kennedy
Best Friend

The daughter of two Starfleet officers, Alexa moved to Vulcan at age five with her parents' reassignments and quickly made friends with Anath in school. They shared a room at the Academy, and Alexa was assigned elsewhere in Starfleet as an engineer but remains in regular contact with Anath.

Thordic Sende Ulthex Ferentis
Close Friend

Anath’s first encounter with Ferentis was not what many would consider a strong foundation for a friendship. When the engineer’s attempt to help in sickbay led to a crate of equipment being misplaced, Anath used the reptilian engineer as a metaphorical punching bag to let out her pent-up frustrations. Ferentis seemed to be very understanding of her need to let off some steam and became one of the officers that Anath was closest to on the USS Blackwell and USS Columbia. However, they went their separate ways after the ship's decommissioning.

Jarred Thoran
Close Friend

The friendship between Anath and Jarred began during shore leave on Oscion. After helping him meditate to ease his guilt over the Blackwell's encounter with a minefield, the two seemed to form a connection. Since then she has built a friendship with the Chief of Security and he has become one of the members of the crew that she trusts the most. Anath was saddened to see Jarred leave the USS Columbia for Losaria. After serving under his command on the USS Atlantis, Anath was devastated to learn of Thoran's death in her absence on personal leave.

Theo Whittaker
Friend and Former Captain

During their time aboard the USS Blackwell and USS Columbia, Anath grew to view Theo as a very inspiring commanding officer. She was the chief medical officer for his tenure in command of both ships, and he later promoted her to second officer of the Columbia. While the two did occasionally share a pot of tea, the relationship did remain mostly professional given Theo's position as captain of the Columbia. However, Anath still counts him as a friend and even asked him to officiate her wedding.

Kurt Logan
Friend

Kurt Logan was already serving in the Andaris Task Force when then-Ensign G'Renn first arrived. They did not work together frequently, being on different ships, but she did enjoy her interactions with the eccentric security officer. Reunited on the USS Atlantis, the two remain on very good terms and enjoy sparring with friendly banter back and forth.

Jora Kalis
Friend and Sickbay Colleague

While Anath has worked with more than dozen other medical officers and reported to two chief medical officers before taking the office herself, but she still remembers working with Doctor Jora on the USS Blackwell quite fondly. She assisted him in treating victims of an earthquake during her first days on the Blackwell and would become friends with him outside of sickbay. Anath even invited the Bajoran/Betazoid medical officer to attend a baseball game with her on the holodeck.

Languages

Fluent

  • Vulcan: Learned during her childhood. The language that Anath uses by default.
  • Klingon: Learned during her childhood. She used to have some trouble with the ‘Q’ and ‘H’ sounds.

Conversational

  • Federation Standard: Learned at Starfleet Academy and from Alexa Kennedy. Almost fluent.
  • Trill: Learned at Starfleet Academy.
