EARLY LIFE

Lael As A Young Child

Lael, Age 5

Lael was born two minutes before her twin brother Kellan on Stardate 236610.24 to Adelynn Rosek in Cedar Springs, Michigan. She never met her father and, due to her mother's silence, knew very little about him. From a young age, Lael showed a talent for mathematics and science, her curious nature leading her to a passion for taking things apart to see how they worked. She spent much of her younger years in fields, studying the local wildlife, even to the point of keeping a nature journal. This love of nature extended to the stars. Lael would often spend summer nights with her brother in her backyard studying them through a telescope. She would visit the nearby Carr-Fles Planetarium whenever she could.

At age 5, Lael joined her school's Daisy Girl Scout Troop and learned the importance of doing for others. It was also at this age that she first began taking jiu-jitsu lessons to combat bullying at school. Though she was bullied in her younger years because her Al-Leyan heritage, her easy-going and compassionate nature won her many friends. She loved to sing and participated in her school's choir. By age 12, Lael's confidence blossomed and she joined her school's Student Leadership Club (SLC). Her passion for active pursuits led her to join her school's cross country team in 6th grade.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Her best friend was a boy named Nicholas Swett, who she remained close with throughout elementary and middle school. He was her first kiss at the tender age of seven. She’d dropped her sandwich at lunch wrestling with a boy named Blake Thomas for pulling her hair. She’d cried at first until Nicholas presented her with half of his and she'd pecked him on the lips to thank him.

As is typical for most young children, Lael had a vivid imagination and her play often involved fantastical adventures. One place in particular inspired many adventures: Mackinac Island, north of Muskegon, Michigan.

Lael in Middle School

Lael, Age 13

As she grew older, she sought more adventurous pursuits, chief among them sailing, cliff-diving, water skiing, rock climbing, and swimming in local ponds and lakes. When she wasn't hanging out with friends, she spent summers on her Uncle's farm doing chores and helping to care for the animals. She became skilled at riding horses and participated in several riding competitions as a young teen, winning second place in her first and second competitions and first place in her third competition. She also participated in her town's cattle roping event the year she turned 13. Animals became a passion for her and that same year, Lael joined her school's Future Farmers of Earth (FFE) club. At the Kent County Fair, she was awarded the Division 1 (grades 7-8) Agriscience Fair Award and also took home the second place award for Outstanding Junior. Outside of her agricultural science interests, she loved sports and joined her school's girls basketball team as a starting power forward. Her athletic talent helped her lead her team to the State Championships, where they unfortunately lost by three points. Lael was disappointed by the loss, but continued to play basketball.

Lael in High School

Lael, Age 16

Lael's mother was determined to train Lael in the feminine arts and when Lael was 15, Adelynn enrolled Lael in finishing school course she herself taught at the local country club. Lael learned social graces, various dancing styles, and how to play the piano.

She was very active in both sports and clubs in high school. She was well liked by almost everyone and always looked for ways to help others. She excelled academically and was a member of her school's National Honor Society. She participated in such school sports as Track, Cross Country, Basketball, Competitive Cheer, and Dance.

During her freshman year, she sang in the choir, performing a solo at the final concert that year. As a sophomore and a junior, she was an active member of her school's Athletic Leadership Club (ALC). It was during this time that she acknowledged her attraction to both men and women, becoming a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). As a senior, she was elected Class President and nominated for Homecoming Queen and lost by only three votes. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was chosen as valedictorian of her high school class.

The idea of Starfleet had fascinated her since she attended a camp there at age 14. She spent most of her adolescence dreaming of a career as a Starfleet Officer. Prior to her high school graduation, she took the Entrance Exam. She was accepted and began her first day as a cadet on Stardate 238508.07 set on following the Command track.

Notable Relationships
  • Kellan Rosek: Despite having many friends, her twin brother was always her greatest ally and her strongest advocate. To this day, they are quite close and communicate often. He often comes to her for relationship advice and she, in return, leans on him in times of emotional difficulty.
  • Adelynn Rosek: Lael's relationship with her mother is extremely strained due to her mother's high, and at times, unreasonable expectations of her.
  • Thomas DeMarcus: Lael had a close relationship with her uncle spending many of her summers until she turned 15 on his farm helping him care for the animals.
  • Louise Rosek-DeMarcus: Lael view's her Aunt Louise as "the fun aunt" and enjoys time in her company.

STARFLEET ACADEMY

Lael and her girlfriend, Ivina

Year One

On her first day of classes, Lael struggled to find her way around campus. Along the walkway headed toward her Birth of the Federation class, Lael literally ran into Ivina Genestra, a Betazoid scientist studying on Earth. The woman had been on her way to meet up with a friend, who was an Associate Professor in the Academy's Xenobiology department. The Betazoid took the whole incident in stride, even offering to help Lael find her first class. An attraction existed between the two from the moment they met and they were always flirting. Lael finally found the courage to ask Ivina out and was surprised when the older woman said yes. Through Ivina, Lael meet friends Michael Zola and Aidia Carter. The four friends spent weekday evenings enjoying Michael's legendary cooking skills and talking about the latest science and engineering developments, going out to bars and dance clubs on the weekends.

During her first year, Lael did well academically, but the holovideos and graphic descriptions of torture caused nightmares and PTSD to the point that she very nearly developed a split personality. As a result, she was dropped from the Command track, and ordered to undergo mandatory medical check-ups and weekly counseling. Lael almost quit the Academy to go in search of her biological father, but her twin convinced her to pursue her true passion: fixing and build things.

A copy of Lael's favorite poem, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night", given to her during her recovery from her rock climbing accident.

Years Two and Three

During her second year at the Academy, Lael began studying Communications/Operations, Engineering, and Physics. At this time, Lael was dating Ivina Genestra, a Betazoid scientist who was studying on Earth. The two were together for almost two years before they mutually decided that, though there was an attraction between them, what they felt for each other didn't go beyond friendship. Heartbroken, Lael went rock climbing with her friends that summer to get her mind off the break-up. However, due to her distraction and the foolish choices made by her climbing partner, she fell, resulting in a severe spinal injury that paralyzed her. She was told she'd never walk again.

About a month following the accident, she was contacted by Doctor Gibbons. He was experimenting with the use of nanotechnology to treat otherwise untreatable spinal conditions. The procedure was highly controversial and hadn't yet been approved for Humanoid testing. Despite the risks, Lael agreed to be the first Humanoid subject to receive the procedure. Following the procedure, Lael completed extensive physical therapy to regain her mobility. It was during this time that she met Elina Kincade, who supervised her care and therapy. Through Elina, Lael also became friends with Rebecca Hollendale and with Dassa Alexander, one of Elina's students and an aspiring Starfleet medical officer. Prior to the beginning of her third year, Lael had an intimate liaison with Dassa, leaving the two permanently connected via an unintentionally-formed psionic bond.

As Doctor Gibbons had promised, Lael passed all of her Academy physicals with flying colors, the nanotechnology offering the added benefit of increasing her already beyond-Human agility and strength as well as marginally increasing her senses; in particular, her sense of smell. She started classes again in the spring following her accident and moved into an apartment off campus with friends Dassa and Elina. The three friends lived together until Lael left for Starbase 118 to begin her Engineering internship at the beginning of what would have been her fourth year.

Year Four, Cadet Cruise, and Graduation

Lael's graduation gift from her grandfather, Adric.

In her fourth year while completing her Engineering internship aboard Starbase 118, she met Jensar Berel. The two had a passionate relationship. Six months following their meeting, the two eloped on Risa. Neither of their families were supportive of the marriage. Six months into their marriage, Jensar's older brother was assassinated, forcing him to return home to fill his brother's role on the Betazed council. Jensar tried to convince Lael to come with him, but she wasn't willing to give up the Starfleet career that she'd fought so hard to keep. Her dreams were in the stars. Lael was devastated and jumped into a rebound sexual relationship with an unjoined Trill woman, Alva Tigan. But this relationship inevitably ended when Alva was selected for Joining.

Lael finished her internship in January 2391, then completed her cadet cruise aboard the USS Centris-A and graduated with a double major in Engineering and Helm/Communications/Operations as well as a minor in Physics. Her maternal grandfather, Adric, was always supportive of her Starfleet aspirations and gave her a special cross upon her graduation to reward her efforts. He unfortunately passed shortly after her graduation, the sudden loss devastating Lael. She'd never really been that close with her maternal grandmother and contact with her all but ceased after Adric's death.

  • Dassa Alexander-Dalton: The two met through Lael's friend, Elina Kincade, and had a one-night stand that resulted in a psionic bond. The two remain friends and have served on multiple ships together. Dassa has provided emotional support and a steady, loyal presence in Lael's life even when they were lightyears apart.
  • Jensar Berel: She and Jensar were together for six months before they eloped despite protests from both families. They were married for six months until they chose to divorce when Jensar’s older brother died and he was forced to return to Betazed to take his brother’s post with the Council.
  • Alva Tigan: Lael’s relationship with Alva was purely sexual and lasted for a period of six months.

POST-ACADEMY: USS Victory

Lael aboard the USS Victory (2392).

Upon graduating on Stardate 239202, Lael was assigned as an Engineering Officer aboard the USS Victory and arrived aboard just after the ship had been severely damaged by the events at Luxis II. Her first tasks as a green ensign were focused on repairing the damage to the ship.

Before the repairs could be completed, Captain Nugra and the crew were given new orders that resulted in them temporarily being assigned to the USS Achilles with the mission of hunting down a missing vial of the Skyfire Virus in conjunction with the Romulan Republic. However, the mission didn't go as planned and while chasing a young woman her colleague, Ensign Janel Tarna suspected of having the missing vial, both she and Tarna were captured and tortured by an organization called Sicarius. The two were eventually rescued, but not before both received severe injuries with Tarna's being life threatening. After retrieving the vial, they returned to the Achilles for treatment and counseling.

After a well-earned shoreleave, the crew of the Victory returned to their ship. Once out of dry dock, they encountered Captain Harrington James of the SS Lady Adventure who shared information about the USS Arrow, a ship that had been lost in the 23rd century. While the away team was aboard the lost ship investigating, the Victory encountered a group of hostile Tholians who demanded the Victory leave their space, forcing the crew to work quickly to retrieve the stranded away team. The Tholians attacked with webs and caused radiation leaks on decks 5-7. Lael was a part of the team that evacuated those decks, first getting sick from the radiation and then seizing from an allergy to the inoculation. She was treated in Sickbay and made a full recovery.

POST-ACADEMY: USS Gorkon

Lael aboard the USS Gorkon (2392).

Following the decommissioning of the Victory on Stardate 239207.17, Lael transferred to the USS Gorkon. While adjusting to life aboard her new ship assignment, Lael experienced lingering nightmares from the Tholian incident and went to Sickbay, where she met Doctor Jansen Orrey, who she felt an instant attraction to.

Shoreleave soon wrapped up and the Gorkon crew responded to a distress call from the USS Tharsis, which was caught in a gravity well. Lael beamed over with a team led by Commander Chen in an attempt to free the trapped ship and save the crew. Little did the away teams know a flying creature had accidentally been set loose that bit the crew, causing them to hallucinate and become violent. While trying to escape those hunting them, Commander Chen was rendered unconscious by a phaser blast, forcing the remaining members of the team to carry him to safety. While the away teams and some of the Tharsis crew were safely retrieved, the Tharsis and all remaining hands were lost when the gravity well tore the ship apart.

Following the Tharsis mission, the crew was prepared for the awards dinner, a masquerade theme set on Astrofori One's Holodeck 666 in a creepy Victorian mansion. But they soon found themselves in the midst of a very real murder mystery when the body of the deceased Cardassian envoy, Kotan Jara, was discovered in the library and attempts to shut down the program led them to realize they were trapped in the simulation. They began their search for clues and the culprit, leading them to a creepy basement with remnants of what they suspected to be blood. Lael and Jansen were then separated from the group when Jansen and found themselves in an underground labyrinth, searching for a way back to their team. As they went, they found evidence that someone had been living there and that the holodeck systems were failing. At last, they escaped and rejoined their team only to find that Commander Walter Brunsig had been shot by a bullet meant for Captain Reynolds. When they moved him back to the mansion, they found Commander Vess wounded as well. Once they had successfully found a way to deactivate the program, both men were beamed to Sickbay for further treatment.

After the mission, while being treated in Sickbay, Lael asked after Brunsig. Once she was cleared, she returned to her quarters to catch up with her friends and her brother. In pain and scared, Lael finally confessed to Jansen about the complications with her spinal injury and he offered his help. The day after, they went on their first date on the holodeck.

With shoreleaave over, it was back to work. What started as a standard mission scanning a nebula soon turned disastrous as some unusual readings led to them being pulled into an alternate universe ruled by the Dominion where the Federation didn't exist and its former officers were hunted by Dominion solders and loyalists. They spent months on the run, trying to keep a low profile while they worked to repair the damaged Gorkon and to return to their own universe. They were led by a man named Connor Lucas to a group of Romulans who offered the parts they needed in exchange for the rescue of a Romulan crew taken prisoner by Erik Jansen, Vess's evil alternate universe counterpart. The team managed to lie their way aboard Deep Space Ten where the prisoners were being held and they split into two groups to locate the prisoners. Once their mission had been completed, they returned to the Gorkon aboard Lucas's shuttle, but Lael was injured in the process, the intense pain of her spinal injury, exacerbated by a collision with a bulkhead, had caused her to pass out. She was taken to the Gorkon's sickbay for treatment.

About a month after the DSX incident, she encountered Chythar Skyfire in the Sto'vo'kor Lounge and, despite resenting him for the pain the Skyfire Virus and subsequent Skyfire Cure had brought into her life, the two quickly became friends. Not long after, the crew found a way home via a Romulan deflector array used to open another fissure like the one they'd been pulled through months ago and managed to evade Erik Jansen's ships to find the USS Yahrala, under the command of Commander Brunsig waiting on the other side to tow them back to Earth.

POST-ACADEMY: USS Za

Lael aboard the USS Za (2394).

Shortly after her spinal replacement surgery, Lael followed her transfer orders with her friends Dassa and Chythar to the USS Za where Alex was already waiting. Not long after her arrival, she reported for her first duty shift on the bridge where she was a part of first contact with a bear-like race called the Hocktin. Lael was assigned to Alex's team to help with setting up a ship to ship network to exchange information. However, the mission quickly went sour when a crewmember was bitten by a flea-like creature and was exposed to a deadly virus.

To make matters worse, Lael and Alex were bitten while aboard the Hocktin vessel and Captain Rhani her team were taken hostage by a militaristic faction. The situation was further exacerbated when Hocktin scientist Professor Mindor beamed aboard without following proper quarantine procedures and exposed the whole ship to the virus. Lael and Alex learned that the Captain had been taken and had to they fight against time to get a blood sample from the immune Hocktin to save the crew and locate the Captain before the disease reached its final stage. The energy they expended in their efforts took a severe toll on them both and they barely returned to the Za in time to receive the cure the Medical team had synthesized.

POST-ACADEMY: USS Veritas

Lael aboard the USS Veritas (2395).

Lael transferred to the USS Veritas on Stardate 239407.07 after the decommissioning of the USS Za. When she, Chythar, and Alex beamed down to New Macau, the Antor II capital, they were shocked at the devastation they found. When they beamed aboard the Veritas, they checked in with Captain Roshanara Rahman where they learned that rifts in space had caused disastrous earthquakes that had damaged many of the planet's dome environments and made them uninhabitable on top of leaving many people dead.

Lael was assigned to work with Alex and Luna Walker, the Veritas Chief Engineer, to repair the domes. While they determined a more sustainable, longer term solution, they beamed down to establish temporary housing in some old mines that would protect the inhabitants from dangerous levels of tetryon radiation. However, they became caught in a cave-in. While Lael and Alex escaped unharmed, Luna and Anjar Thoran became trapped.

Lael, Alex and the Search and Rescue (SAR) Team led by Commander Kelrod and Lieutenant, Junior Grade Carter Greyson worked desperately to free the two trapped officers. At last, they were able to safely retrieve Luna and Anjar and transport them to Sickbay to be treated for their injuries.

POST-ACADEMY: USS Montreal

Lael aboard the USS Montreal (2396).

The Veritas was scheduled to meet with the Montreal to transfer Lieutenant Commander Sky Blake. However, the vessel arrived early at the rendezvous badly damaged with Commander Zhou Tai-Sheng seriously injured. Lael was ordered to gather a team to aid with repairs and Commander Mei'konda, unknown to Lael, was instructed to take command of the vessel. [1] Not long afterward, Mei'konda invited Lael to his ready room and offered her the position of first officer.[2]

Their first mission as a crew was one of the more memorable ones of her career. News reached her in the Montreal's Engineering from Commander Mei'konda that the Tholians had destroyed Astrofori One, a rather large Federation outpost. It stunned her that the Tholians would do something so bold and brazen. She ordered Lieutenant Thoran to take a team down to the torpedo launchers and help load them since their autoload was still offline. Before heading to the bridge, she gave Ensign Jacob Harkrow an encouraging pep talk. [3]

Once she arrived on the bridge, she took her place at Commander Mei’konda’s side. Not long after she sat down, Lieutenant German Galven detected a temporal rift. Concerned, Lael instructed Ensign Mesda Chatva to keep them well away so they didn’t get pulled in like the ‘’Gorkon’’ had during one of their missions. [4][5] Lieutenant Galven and Ensign Esbrun Vardai began to work on closing the rift.
