|Ensign Caitríona Cayne|
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."
Early Life (2362 - 2380)
Caitríona was born on Earth. Her parents, Kathleen and Patrick, were Irish and raised her along with her brother, Anthony. They lived on a small farm in the south of Ireland that her father owned. She had a good upbringing and considers her parents to be good people, they would have done anything for their kids. If you asked someone who lived in the village close by, they would have been described Caitríona as a shy child, usually listening rather than speaking. She would enjoy going to the seaside at the nearby harbour town of Cobh - the fresh air and the smell of the sea always brought her great comfort.
In her school work, she was pretty normal. Even though she was a shy child, she loved to take part in plays and productions that were put on. Seeing the smile on her parents face, it made her feel proud, and that was something she always wanted to make them feel.
Her brother who was older than her finished school first. Caitríona would help out on the farm from time to time but this became more of a full-time job for Anthony. However, Caitríona wanted more for her life, and she was heavily influenced by her mother, a maternity nurse to go out there and find what she was looking for. She suffered from a lot of doubt, she didn't feel Starfleet would be for her - well actually, she didn't believe she was for Starfleet. Her doubt deterred her from applying to the academy so she could study as a Doctor. Instead, she went to the local Starfleet Medical Facility so she could apply to train as a nurse.
Nursing (2380 - 2388)
Caitríona was now 18, finished her secondary education and she had to do something with her life. It was time for her to grow. She started training to be a nurse, even though she was unsure what she wanted to do in the future - but she did know. Her dreams were to be a Medical Officer on a Starship, to discover the universe. Her own self-doubt and insecurities caused her to not even try.
She spent 4 years studying with a few other people her age, some were passionate about Nursing - more so than she was maybe. Caitríona is a very meticulous and precise person, and eventually, she really started to enjoy what she was doing. She had a friendly nature and couldn't bear seeing others in pain. Her seniors would tell her that she had great qualities in becoming a great nurse.
Once she graduated from her training, she was immediately put to work. She would spend hours and hours in the medical facility, getting experience in all types of situations. It really helped her grow as a person. She wasn't as shy as her childhood self after being forced from her shell in the medical environment. Communication was key and she was thankfully quick to adapt. However, she still felt like she wasn't doing what she wanted to do, what she needed to do. She saw many people go to Starfleet Academy and become officers and she was always envious of the Doctors.
While working as a Nurse, Caitriona met a Bajoran Marine who was visiting Earth. His name was Bikar Zuv. Tales of the state of the Bajoran homeland were in their peak on Earth, lots of wounded - militia and freedom fighters. Even though a small few (from her somewhat small-minded/gossipping community) may have been wary of interacting with a Bajoran at the time - "He could be a terrorist" some would whisper. - Caitríona wasn't worried about Bikar at all. The two become close, lovers, after a few years he even proposed. Caitríona was the happiest she had ever been and it was total bliss.
In 2388, the year Bajor joined the Federation, Caitríona accompanied Bikar to Bajor to see his home and also meet those he cared for, however, an old Cardassian bomb which was hidden during the Occupation was trigged accidentally with Bikar and Cayne - among many other civilians and military being in close proximity. The explosion was devastating, and even though she survived she suffered from psychological and physical damage.
She needed to do more with her life, being a nurse wasn't enough. She needed purpose and duty. She knew if she was a Starfleet Officer during that one moment, she could have done more. She could have saved more. Her brother was the one who convinced her to eventually apply to Starfleet Academy, and she got in.
Starfleet (2388 - 2396)
Caitríona didn't mind being a mature student. In fact, some people were older than her!
She had never taken anything more seriously in her life. She needed to do this, her dreams were becoming a reality and there was no one going to get in her way. Yes - she was very competitive in class. Once a shy little girl with mediocre grades, now she was one of the top students in the class. All that self-doubt she felt was all before couldn't have been anymore untrue, her experience as a nurse and the dedication she put into her work made her excel, there was no doubt in her mind anymore. She was meant to be a Starfleet Officer.
The academy was long, she knew it would be. 4 years studying Medicine and another 4 years to become an Officer. She had met a lot of people along the way, she made great friends - even a few flings, but she was only there for one reason, she would someday be on a ship and exploring beyond her horizon.
The USS Gorkon (2396)
After her training was finally finished, Caitríona was posted to the USS Gorkon as a Medical Officer. After immediately boarding the Gorkon, she was briskly shuffled to her quarters where she had to prepare for an away mission. First Officer - Lieutenant Commander Jo Marshall, Councillor - Lieutenant JG Corliss Fortune and Security & Tactical Officer - Lieutenant JG Groznin Smith were already in preparation for their mission on Nassau in the Ma no Umi region. Caitríona was on board the shuttle and waited until she was called into action. Lt. Cmd Marshall thought her assistance would be needed from the get-go - so it didn't take long before she found herself submerged in a bustling dock full of people. This was the furthest she has ever been from home.
Their mission was to seek out and extract an undercover agent in the Habitation District of Nassau.
Along the way the team travelled along via rail system - however, they were sidetracked by an Orion woman names Theeda who pickpocketed the First Officer and stole their credit chit and her weapon. They pursued the woman through the streets resulting in a small head injury for Caitríona. Once they caught up with Theeda in an alley they quickly realised it was an ambush - they were surrounded, weapons aimed directly at them. Corliss and Groznin who were disguised respectfully as a Pirate Captain and her first mate tried to negotiate with Theeda. She asked them to steal a Horga'hn from a nearby bar, but as before she left, she quickly stabbed Jo Marshall in the stomach.
Caitríona immediately rushed to her side and performed emergency trauma procedures by (temporarily) closing the blood vessels to prevent internal bleeding and sealing the wound with a Dermal Regenerator and Pseudocutean Dressing. This would give them enough time before Jo Marshall would need further treatment only available in the sickbay aboard the Gorkon.
After the intense incident, they finally found their way back onto the rail system and into the Habitation District.
Once they found their way into the Habitation district. The team came upon a bar - The Western Inn. A fight broke out and the team was split momentarily. Caitríona and Corliss were tasked with investigating a strange person who was spotted on the floor above them by Jo - who with Groznin got involved in the bar fight as a form of distraction. The two women made their way upstairs and ran into the Orion, Lishesaa. She blocked a doorway, however, she eventually let them pass. Once inside this room they were surprised to find their target, Blackbird, outside the window and ready to take flight.
The fight seemed to find its way upstairs as two Nausiccan men broke through the door, followed by a Klingon. Blackbird slipped a piece of paper into Caitríona's hand and disappeared. The Klingon took out the other two and grabbed onto Caitríona's "satchel" - her medical kit in disguise. Corliss helped by fighting the man off, however, Cait was left with a nasty scratch on her face. The two followed Blackbirds lead and flew out the window into the alleyway below.
In the alleyway, they were reunited with Jo and Groznin and continued their search for Blackbird. This time they had a clue - the piece of paper he left them. Following his cryptic clues, their path led them deeper and deeper into the Habitation District. Now covered by nightfall they found the Blackbird, and riding on bikes they found their way out of the city - into the middle of nowhere. However, they were tailed and chaos ensued. The Orion from The Western Inn, Lishessa and the Klingon now revealed to be Thontiq, found the group after Thontiq slipped a tracking device onto the bag of Caitríona. As a joke they decided to play a mind-game, knowing the Blackbird's trust would be further destroyed, and in turn, the Fox had become a "Rat".
Everyone but Blackbird still had trust in Cait. Jo didn't give him much choice but to follow them, so while Groz and Corliss fled the scene; they followed them - Blackbird coming up with the cunning idea to throw an overloaded phaser into the ring of Lishesaa and her goons. This turned into a little bit of a bike chase back into the city, along the way Cait ditched the bag and they were able to shake those who survived the blast and followed them. From here Caitríona and Jo made their way back (Blackbird deciding not to go with them) to the Boneshaker - the shuttle - and came across an altercation between Groz, Corliss and Theeda, who seemed to have been taken out.
Caitríona helped Groznin and Jackson (the pilot) back onto the shuttle - however from outside Caitríona heard a cry from Corliss as Theeda made another attempt to kill Jo. The counsellor was left with no choice but to use her phaser to defend herself and their FO. It seemed Blackbird followed them here and was joining them after all - he shuffled them all onto the shuttle, however, Theeda's body ended up on the shuttle also after the pilot brought it onboard. After checking the Orion - it seemed she was going into Cardiac Arrest. Cait administered her with medicine and began to perform CPR - essentially saving her life. However, the Orion seemed distressed at her newly found situation and inevitable imprisonment - Caitríona used a drug to knock her unconscious to prevent any mind games and pheromones which would affect the males on board.
As they worked their way off the asteroid - Caitríona noticed the FO Jo, wasn't looking healthy - it was quite alarming how quickly the woman was deteriorating. After some push and pull - the commander agreed to come to the back of the shuttle so the doctor could look after her. Their hearts sunk when they looked at the previous stab wound and found it had a nasty trail of black tendril-like fluid travelling up a blood vessel toward her heart. With no equipment to stop this on the shuttle, Caitríona could only comfort the woman and keep her cool as a fever set in. The team quickly got to the rendezvous point to meet with the USS Triumphant and the two human females were transported to the sickbay.
It was here Caitríona's skill as a Medical Officer were put to the test. She had spent a long time while comforting Jo in working out exactly what she needed to do and essentially pushed her way into leading the surgery instead of one of the more experienced Doctors onboard the Triumphant. During the surgery, Caitríona removed a microscopic piece of the blade Theeda used which had a poisonous material attached to it which was slowly making its way to the woman's heart to kill her. She removed this and drained the poison. However when everything was finished - Jo Marshall's heart began to fail and eventually stopped. By using revival techniques, Caitríona was able to restart the heart and save the Commander's life.
After a short break, a moment to herself, Cait returned to check on the Commander and found the Chief Medical Officer Genkos Adea by her bedside. This was the start of a professional relationship between the two as the Gorkon returned to Earth for the wedding of it’s commanding officer. While on Earth, a temporary position opened up at the Academy which Cait undertook.
