Plot Summary
Severely damaged while rescuing her stranded crew, the USS Veritas has been towed all the way back to Utopia Planetia dock yards for extensive repairs and a comprehensive refitting. Her crew, battered from their months eking out basic survival, have been granted an extended shore leave to recover physically and psychologically from the ordeal. Some seek the comforts of home and family while others face new challenges in their personal and professional worlds. A few even choose to pursue (mis)adventures when confronted by a criminal from their recent past with a tantalizing opportunity.
Shoreleave Traditions
A night on the town at Esperence for Lieutenant Junior Grade Geoffrey Teller and Ensign Wil Ukinix[1][2] goes from fun to catastrophic when they awaken the next day to discover that, in their reverie, they have absconded with the new cybernetic limb of Lieutenant Junior Grade G'var and made modifications to it which neither can remember. To their shock, Geoff & Wil discover that those modifications are not the only souvenirs of their drunken night out.
The Lost Treasure of the Bolian Rose
With the ship just towed to Esperence base on the edge of the Shoals and free to take leave for the first time since their ordeal, G'var, Wil Ukinix and Geoffrey Teller are stunned to discover the Orion Pirate, Mistress IA, in their shared hotel suite with a threat, a bargain and a treasure map.
Meeting the Family
Ensign Wil Ukinix and Lieutenant Junior Grade G'var have decided to spend much of their leave with Wil's family, at their home situated on a vineyard in Australia. The promise of a welcome home barbecue among his large family sounds like paradise to Wil, but G'var, still adapting to her cybernetic replacement limb after losing her arm on Limbo, is uncomfortable and uncertain at meeting the family of the man she has come to love. The happy homecoming is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of Fleet Captain Cassandra Egan Manno, who works with Commander Stacey Ukinix, Wil's mother.
Fine Dining
At the Jansen Plantation in Louisiana, Lieutenant Commander Raissa Moonsong, her infant daughter Natalia and guests Ensign Wil Ukinix and Lieutenant Junior Grade G'var are welcomed to a special country feast as prepared by ships counselor Jansen Orrey. Comfort food is the order of the day as a newly developed treatment, courtesy of Orrey, allows Raissa to indulge in dishes rich in meat, much to her delight. Bourbon and conversation goes late into the evening as Wil and G'var explore new dimensions of their relationship while Jansen and Raissa explore the boundaries of theirs.
A Look Within
Returning to Betazed and his mothers insights, Commander Kelrod, with his original consciousness of Marcus Dickens in the lead, attempts to forge a new balance between the dual personalities that inhabit the single body.
Family Matters
Elsewhere on Betazed, Lieutenant Commander Sky Blake seeks out a man from her forgotten past in an attempt to build a future for their estranged daughter, Faith, who is separated from them by distance, time, and Blake's own traumatic experiences.
Exposure
Back aboard the Veritas, the mountain of repair work and excitement of an engine upgrade brings together Captain Roshanara Rahman and Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Junior Grade Geoffrey Teller. After a series of shared work and conversations forms a bond between the officers, their personal and professional relationship is strained after Captain Rahman discovers a personal indiscretion committed by Teller at the beginning of his leave.
Special Projects
Back on Earth, First Officer Commander Evan Delano is contacted by an old colleague in Starfleet and brought out to the testing grounds for an unusual and slightly suspicious weapons platform being tested on the edges of the Sol system.
An Encounter With the Past
An unexpected visit from a determined investigator at her families home forces Captain Roshanara Rahman to question her past, her parents and herself.
New Faces
Two new officers join the scattered crew of the Veritas as the ship is being mended.
Ensign Ronen Pragus joins the crew straight out of the Academy, anxious to prove himself as he assumes the Operations position. As a member of the bridge crew, he knows his responsibilities are critical but discovers that life aboard ship is not at all what he expected.
Ensign Addison 'Addy' MacKenzie, M.D., has just completed a micro-surgical fellowship and joins the ships medical team under newly transferred Chief Medical Officer, Nicolo Del Vedova. Confident in her skills and background as a healer, she's less confident about applying those skills to what she sees as a military organization with a nebulous goal. Still, she rises to the challenge and is confronted with an emergency only days after joining the crew.
Log Entries
Personal Log, Commander Evan Delano. Stardate 239601.13 While much of the crew has departed to get an early start on their extended shore leave, a skeleton crew including myself and Captain Rahman have seen Veritas through the final leg of our journey all the way back to the Sol system. It’s strange being back here after so long. Last time I was on Earth, I was considering withdrawing from Starfleet permanently. Now, I feel like a fish out of water. The Shoals feels more home to me than Earth or Vulcan ever did. But, I will be glad to catch up with the human half of my family. Strangely, a part of me is already feeling homesick. |
Chief Engineers Log, Lt. JG Geoffrey Teller. Stardate 239601.13 // Since the damage suffered escaping Limbo, my primary duties have involved keeping the ship spaceworthy as we were towed from one dock to another for substantial repairs and refitting. The entire primary deflector array will have to be replaced along with half the EPS grid and there are numerous subsystems that will require substantial inspection and re-certification before the ship can again be declared spaceworthy. It breaks my heart to see the big girl getting towed around and the idea of turning her over to the yard teams at Utopia Planetia is making my eye twitch, but the fact of the matter is the ship has taken a huge amount of abuse recently and patching the damage just isn't realistic. Most of the Engineering crew is taking much deserved leave while we're in the Sol system but I'll be staying aboard to oversee the repair work and to try, anywhere I can, to accelerate repairs so we can get back out there. There's a very old quote that has been rattling around my head the last few weeks and it seems appropriate to share here. “A ship is safe in port, but that is not what ships are for.” |
Personal Log, Ensign Wil Ukinix. Stardate 239602.20 Ah, stuff it. I’m going back to work. |
