Personal History

John was born in Kansas City and the timing could not have been better, as his fathers’ ship was in Earth spacedock for a refit when he was born. As he would say it was one of the proudest moments of his life to be there for the birth of his son.

Early on, John was an avid reader, and he pretty much read whatever he could lay his hands on. His thirst for reading led him to languages and he learned several languages, including Romulan, Klingon (two dialects), Vulcan and a little bit of Ferengi.

His love of the spoken word took him to the University of Kansas, where he majored in both Linguistics and Psychology, graduating in 2376. On the advice of his mother and father, he went to college first before attending Starfleet Academy, where he majored in Counseling and Communications. He always had a drive to talk to other races which inhabited the Federation, and he always had a drive to see what was over the next hill, find the next new sentient race, learn their language and teach them his. His parents made sure they kept him out of the Dominion War by having him go to college first before going to the Academy. John was also an accomplished boxer, having taken up the sport at the age of twelve and earned the nickname, "The Punisher."

Graduating in 2380, Johns’ first assignment was at Starbase 375, where he was assigned to the Counselors’ Office, where he was one of ten on the staff.

In 2383, he made his first deep space assignment and promotion to Lieutenant on board the USS Trieste, which was assigned to patrol the far reaches of known Federation space. He found the work challenging, since he was the only counselor billeted for the ship. However, he made it a point to talk to those he counseled in their native language, and as a result, spoke more than adequately in several more Earth languages including Farsi, Spanish, French and Bantu.

In 2389, John left the Trieste and was assigned to Starbase One, on Earth. Later that year, he worked with several veterans of the Klingon invasion of that year, assisting them with handling PTSD from the conflict

In 2392, John was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and was assigned to Deep Space Nine, where he learned snippets of two more languages...Ferengi and Bajoran and occasional forays through the wormhole.

It was during his time on DS9 he met his future wife, Melinda, a strikingly beautiful woman from Cestus Three. She was an archaeologist, and the two spent a great deal of time exploring Bajoran archaeological sights, and the two married in late 2394.

However, it was not a smooth marriage. Melinda was not Starfleet, and she wanted John to resign his commission and explore ruins across the quadrant and use his considerable linguistic skills to translate whatever writings that they might find, but he continually resisted, and they had several major arguments about their future.

In the middle of counseling passengers from the Red Star Incident of 2397, Melinda filed for divorce via subspace radio. . It took him by surprise, as he thought they might be able to work things out. Unfortunately, Melinda was not going to relent on her request for him to resign, and there was no way he was going to. He never saw her after the divorce petition, and the divorce was granted Stardate 239803.18

In late 2398, John was assigned to Amity Station, an assignment he requested because of the opportunity to meet and converse with new races in the Delta quadrant and hopefully help the Federation and Starfleet make a few new friends, and strengthen old ties. It is an assignment he is looking forward to.

His first mission out of the gate was to establish an alliance with the Hawlat, a nomadic race which followed space borne creatures which they referred to as Angels. Left in command of the outpost while LT. Commander Ukinix took the USS Independence B out to assist with what to do with the creatures, which were complicating mining operations in the nebula. The Hawlat were skeptical, their dealings with other races were not positive. When the Hawlat envoked the "Ritual Of Trust", John immediately seized upon it to prove that the Federation and Starfleet could be trusted. However, in the middle of the negotiations, Ikaia Wong expressed his misgivings of the contents of the Hawlat provided "Angels Milk." Wongs' timing could not have been worse as the non united front could have easily derailed the talks.. However, this hiccup was overcome, the Federation and Starfleet proved their worth, and Amity Outpost had made their first allies since their arrival.

However, all was not completely well. John was extremely displeased with Wongs' difficulty in understanding the protocol required in such situations, and transferring him to Andoria was something he kept under serious consideration. However, after talking to Katy Toliver, he decided against it.

John was always wondering what he could do from a Command point of view, and he found out during a mission escorting the USS Kitty Hawk on board the USS Independence B. The ship was caught in a subspace sinkhole and pulled in, badly damaging the ship and cutting off all access to the rest of the ship. John was in command on the bridge, and he worked to restore control to the rest of the ship. Those and subsequent actions earned John the Legion Of Merit and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
