About the Writer

Ensign Esma is a 22-year-old Vulcan/Romulan junior engineering officer aboard Amity Outpost.

Backstory

Esma was born on Romulus on stardate 237904.05, also known as First Contact Day in the United Federation of Planets, a major holiday that celebrates the Vulcans making first contact with humans in the mid-21st century. Born of a Vulcan father and Romulan mother, she embodies a captivating blend of contrasting cultures. Her father's involvement in Ambassador Spock's unification efforts on Romulus destined her for a life colored by both Vulcan logic and Romulan passion.

The catastrophic Hobus supernova of 2387 forever altered Esma's path. The Federation's evacuation efforts saved her and her family, although countless Romulans and Remans were lost to the tragic disaster due to the diminished scale of the evacuation following the synth attack on the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards two years earlier in 2385, which coincidentally also happened on First Contact Day and Esma's birthday.

Following their escape from the destruction of Romulus, Esma and her family sought refuge on Vulcan. However, the embrace of her paternal grandparents eluded her and her mother due to prejudice against their Romulan heritage. Ironically, as she continued towards adulthood on Vulcan, Esma took a bit more after her father's characteristics, if not his Vulcan logic completely, then his Vulcan aloofness, which had led to some tensions with her mother at times who didn't want Esma to completely lose sight of the other half of her heritage.

When the time came for Esma to decide her educational path, she faced a choice between attending the Vulcan Science Academy or pursuing other options. For Esma, the decision was clear—Starfleet Academy.

Amity Outpost

After graduating from Starfleet Academy in 2400, she was assigned to Amity Outpost in the Delta Quadrant. She met her new colleagues Ensigns Olidra Fog, Harrison Kiani, and Kaito Moore aboard the quantum slipstream starliner Charles Lindbergh shortly before their arrival to their new assignment.

In 2401, she became roommates with Samantha Richards, whom Esma was eager to study.

Later that year, during the Frontier Day massacre, an assimilated-Esma attempted to pry off her boss Nathan Richards' prosthetic arm while they were both aboard the USS Artemis-A. In the aftermath, she was unsure how best to reconcile with her department chief, concerned that he might harbor lingering resentment towards her.

Personality

Esma is fascinated by the unpredictability of non-Vulcans and finds interactions with them stimulating. She sees many social encounters as "examinations" and puzzles to be figured out to achieve the best or desired result.

Relationships

Friends

  • Harrison Blackwood: Harrison was part of the original cohort of ensigns who were assigned with Esma to Amity Outpost. They arrived to find the station in chaos with their ambassador, Rivi Vataix, missing. Harrison has helped Esma understand how to navigate social situations, and he reminded her that she shouldn't study people without their permission.
  • Kaito Moore: Like Harrison, Kaito was part of the initial set of ensigns assigned to Amity with Esma, and he quickly organized the gang into an "Ensign Mafia." With a daring and affable personality, Kaito has integrated well into the social scene aboard Amity, and Esma likewise has found his guidance (and even just himself as a model of social behavior) helpful in her studies.
  • Samantha Richards: Esma's roommate. Esma admires Sam's ease at making friends and handling conversations and hopes to learn more from observing the lively human civilian scientist.

Nemesis

  • Robin Hopper: Although well-meaning, Lt. Commander Hopper's cheerful eagerness to be helpful to Esma and the other junior officers can at times make the chief science officer particularly challenging for Esma to be around. While Hopper serves in a different department, the woman's intimate relationship with Esma's department chief Nathan Richards adds an additional complication for Esma to navigate. For her part, Lt. Commander Hopper is entirely unaware of Esma's apprehension towards her.
