USS Discovery-A

Revision as of 03:44, 8 May 2007 by Salak (talk | contribs) (Adding Discovery-B nav menu as there isn't a Discovery-A one yet that I know of and I don't want to glare at a red link for the time being)

The primary support vessel of the StarBase 118 Ops crew during the command of Captain Tyr Waltas was the Akira-class USS Discovery-A. Like her predecessor, the Discovery-A was the protector of Starbase 118 and a multi-role craft.

The Discovery-A was destroyed after the Romulan incursion at StarBase 118.

Specifications

The Akira-class is what many other ships at the time of her initial run wished they were. She is a true warship. Even after many years of production, the Akira is one of the most dangerous ships in production. The vessel is smaller than the Galaxy class starship yet easily has twice the overall firepower thanks to its many torpedo launchers. It was original planned to stop the production of these vessels because they were seen as warship only. The people in the government who had forced a stop in production had also stopped the Defiant class from going beyond prototype. Due to escalating tension between the Federation and the Dominion, they were overruled and the production of the Akira class was continued. It was very lucky that this class was continued because they often were the ships that held out in the fight. These ships did incredibly well during the war against the Dominion and sometimes took on ships far large than them or had to take on groups of enemy vessels. It is hoped by many senior officers that the production will not stop with the end of the war. So far, at least the finishing of construction on the ships that had already begun. While before the war against the Dominion, theses ships were not as popular with crews as the Galaxy class, they are now the most popular class to serve on after the Sovereign and Defiant classes. In appearance, the ships looks a little like the prior Akyazi class although the Akira is far larger and far more powerful.

These ship's main advantage is in the large number of torpedo launchers. The ship has a total of 15 photon torpedo launchers: 4 forward-firing on the "roll bar," 2 rear-firing tubes on the "roll bar," 2 side-firing on the port side, 2 side-firing on the starboard side, and 5 forward-firing in the saucer section. In beam weaponry, the ship does carry less firepower than most ship classes of its size. The ship carries one phaser strip on the top of the primary hull and two phaser strips on the bottom of the primary hull. The shields of the vessel are as powerful as those carried on the Galaxy class starship even though the Akira is smaller. These ships also carry some armor to withstand combat.

As a result, these ships have a good rate of survival compared to most federation ship classes. It is probably that later ship classes with carry adaptive phasers and adaptive shields similar to those carried on the Sovereign class.

Just recently, the newest models of the Akira have finally made some accommodation for civilians. This was resisted for quite some time, and was only accomplished by reducing the area devoted for Marines. Even the newer models do have space for some marines and have the ability to act as flagships although usually the larger Sovereign class is used as flagships. These ships have expanded shuttle bays, to accommodate several fighters and shuttles.

Stats

  • Number of Decks: 18
  • Height: 87.43 meters
  • Width: 316.67 meters
  • Length: 464.43 meters
  • Warp Engines: MARA
    • Normal Cruise Speed: Warp 7
    • Max. Cruise Speed: Warp 8.8
    • Emergency Speed: Warp 9.8 for 12 Hrs
  • Crew:
    • 500 (100 Officers/400 Enlisted)
    • 154 Families/Civilians
    • 146 Starfleet Marines
    • 4,500 Maximum "evacuation limit"
  • Propulsion: In-line Impulse Engines, providing superior turning velocities. Warp engines and fuel supplies containing enough Antimatter and Deterium magnetically sealed storage pods to go 15 months at standard cruise velocity (warp 8).
  • Weapons:
    • 4 x Type X phaser arrays, total output 22,500 TeraWatts
    • 15 x Pulse fire Photon torpedo tubes + 3000 torpedoes
  • Shields:
    • Generators (Type 19 shield generators)
    • Total capacity: 1,876,500 TeraJoules
  • Ablative Armour: Plating attached to the outer hull to displace the heat associated with phaser blasts or atmospheric friction.
  • Flight Deck: Another unusual feature of the Akira class is the hangar bay arrangements. There are two large shuttle bays in the saucer section, one at the forward edge of the saucer section and one at the rear. These are linked together through the centre of the ship, allowing large numbers of launch and landing operations to be handled simultaneously. During peacetime this allows the Akira to evacuate large numbers of small survey craft, or ferry evacuees on board at a high rate. During the Dominion War the ships often serve as fighter carriers; in this role they can carry up to one hundred attack fighters, although a load of thirty six fighters and a dozen utility craft is more usual.
  • Sensors: Long range sensor package 27.2 lightyear range
