A region of space near the Aurona Nebula and the asteroid fields bordering the Wheeler Colony which is composed of various gases and materials, including an unidentified substance (believed to be feces of a space-faring entity within the region) that renders sensors unreliable and, upon contact with metal-based material (such as ship hulls), is corrosive.
The Furnance is also an established trade route for the Free Trade Union which also operates the Furies Furnace Base on a moving asteriod within the corridor, recently discovered by the crew of the USS Independence, serving aboard the USS Hammond at the time of the discovery.
The incident in question led to the FTU signing with the Federation the Furies Furnace Treaty, opening the doors for further interaction with the Union.
