Lt. Commander James

“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.”

Professor Carl Sagan

Lieutenant Commander James, a Terran/Vulcan, is the First Officer of Deep Space 285. Formerly he was the First Officer aboard the USS Constitution-B, before a near-fatal heart attack forced him to resign his position, and has previously served as a Com/Ops Officer aboard the USS Discovery-C, Engineering Officer aboard the USS Drake, Assistant Chief Engineering Officer aboard Starbase 118, Chief Engineer aboard the USS Darwin-A and First Officer on the USS Excalibur-A. He also spent several months acting as an Academy Trainer on the Starbase 118 Academy Campus where he also occasionally lectured. He took Com/Ops as a Minor in order to better learn the systems he'd some day have to repair.

Stats

James' Signature. He always signs in both Vulcan and Standard, although the handwriting for both is pretty bad.

Appearance

  • Height: 2.2m (7'2")
  • Weight: 90kg (14st 1lb)
  • Hair Color: Black
  • Length of Hair: Slightly longer than logic would usually dictate
  • Eye Color: Blue
  • Skin Tone: Light pink, slight green cast
  • Distinguishing Features: His size.
  • Build: Very tall although quite thin, but not unusually so. He does have issues with stealth, however.
  • Face: Not typically Vulcan
  • Eyes: Almond shaped
  • Mouth: Virtually expressionless.
  • Poses (Hands/Gestures, Feet/Legs, Torso/Head): Similar to the military 'at ease' stance
  • Taste in Clothing (when off duty): When in public basically what he usually wears on duty, but with a more plain shirt. On his own however, Jeans and a old replicated movie shirt. Recently, James has started to wear Vulcan Robes over jeans in some public situations.
  • Shoes: Safety boots
  • Voice: Deep but not very. Very level, almost disinterested, during normal situations. Can sometimes sound strange as he gets used to his new dentures.
  • Handedness: Ambidextrous

Manner

  • Habits: Pauses before speaking
  • Mannerisms: Very impassive
  • Religion/Spiritual Devotion: Atheist
  • Hobbies and Pastimes: Terran history - particularly 20th century -, using and maintaining old computers and reading
  • Likes: Order, Computers, Logic
  • Dislikes: Crowds, Transporters
  • Ambitions and Goals: To advance ranks in Starfleet and one day be able to maintain a ship like the ones he idolized in youth.
  • Achievements in Life: Entered Starfleet a year early. Promoted to Assistant Chief Engineering Officer.
  • Disappointments in Life: Not being initially appointed to Engineering when he left the Academy, although he is glad he was appointed to the Discovery.
  • Temperment: Very calm in the majority of situations. It is very hard to get him to show emotion, except in certain situations. Out of work, James will show a higher level of emotion although it is still relatively tame.
  • Mental problems (complexes and phobias):
  • Physical Limitations: Slightly weaker than your average Vulcan.

Beliefs

While having been raised on the teachings of Surak, he is not the most adamant follower. Perhaps due to the influence of his mother, he views logical as a powerful tool and Surak's teachings as more of an instruction manual for it. Consistently there are times where another tool is necessary or the instruction manual needs to be ignored. As a result socially, he behaves far more emotionally than most Vulcans, although still far less than most other species as emotion is a far more suited tool there. Additionally, he will occasionally apply logic to Surak's teachings (For instance by justifying withholding information from the DTI on the Drake's temporal activities as the needs of the many who may be put into danger by revealing their existence outway his need, as a one, to not lie). This leaves him somewhat in the middle of being a follower of Surak and not following him.

Backstory

James was born in the city of Shi'Kahr, Vulcan on the 30th of April 2367. His Father is a Physicist named S'bok, who is half-Vulcan and his mother is a Terran computer programmer called Kaname Nakamura. He was named after his great-grandfather Admiral Nakamura (not Starfleet).

His childhood was mostly spent studying. Even from a young child he wanted nothing more than to succeed academically, and that he did. At the age of 11 he passed the Kahs-Wan and was admitted into the Shi'kahr Academy. The next 5 years of his life are not practically fond times for James and is part of the reason why is emotional shell is so dense. James was mercilessly teased by his fellow students due to his 'impure' heritage. Regularly he was told that "I have noted many resemblances between your Mother and an Earth rodent of the subfamily Cricetinae, while my nose, which is ten times stronger than that of a human, could not fail to detect around your Father a powerful odor of plants in the genus Sambucus." and that "You are so deficient in intellect, that when instructed to bring back a fruit-filled baked pastry, you search for a rational sum for the ratio of the circumference of a circular area to that of a straight segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints are on the circumference.".

Photo from a family trip to the Great T'Kala Sea.

By 2385 James had graduated from Shi'kahr with honours. He entered Starfleet Academy a year early taking Engineering as his major and Com/Ops as his minor. He took Com/Ops in order to have a better understanding of the systems he'd someday have to repair. In 2389 he finally graduated from Starfleet Academy and joined the USS Discovery-C as a Com/Ops officer.

James time aboard the Discovery-C was fairly short (approximately two months), however James fondly remembers it. During this time James made friends in Telice, Kieran, Jorus and Tom. Unfortunately, the only one James has been able to keep in touch with, so far, is Kieran. During his off-time, his group of friends managed to convince him to go to a local nightclub on DS-285 which ended in complete disaster with the group and Captain Tyr Waltas in the ships sickbay.

By 2390 he had transferred to the USS Drake as an Engineering Officer where he also found friendship in Wanda. After a particularly interesting surgery (of sorts) on the mechanical Pandora they bonded over a shared dinner.

Relationships

Mentors

During James' Starfleet career, he has had the good fortune (if such a thing could be said to exist) to serve under some particularly fine officers. While not all their leadership styles were compatible with his own, this is a list of the people who have influenced his attitude and style of and to leadership.
Raj Blueheart - Raj was the first officer of the USS Discovery-C while James was on board. James has a great deal of respect for him. James also assisted Raj with his learning on Vulcan meditation techniques. Perhaps the greatest thing Raj taught him, was to listen. James fondly remembers his days on the Discovery bridge, where Raj would accept the input of even the lowliest officer, like himself, and use it in his decision making process. Cmdr Raj Blueheart1.png
Pandora - James direct boss in Engineering. James is ever so slightly fascinated in the fact that she is an Android and very much appreciates working with another logical being. Due to James' work in AI he also very much appreciates just how complex Pandora is as a program, if only he had had the chance to look at it... Pandora had, arguably, the greatest impact on his leadership style. After serving under her for a year, James had soon adopted the same expectations of a excellent level of standards as she does. He also inherited several other features from her, such as her reluctance to spend time away from areas that need her, i.e. The warp core comes before paperwork. Pandora.jpg
William Rogers - James last CO on the USS Drake and Starbase 118. Despite knowing little about the man personally, James has a deep respect for him as a CO and trusts him implicitly. James always admired Rogers' willingness to as much leeway as needed. Like Raj, he listened to everyone's opinions before acting however, as shown during James' time undercover, when he had to act he did so without hesitation. He was also responsible for granting James many of the opportunities that made him the officer he is today. Because of him, James always tries to give those under him the room they need to complete the task on their own, without him prescribing the course of action - this has led James to even be surprised at how well someone has exceeded his expectations. Rogerscommand.jpg
Kael Thomas - James' First Officer when he served on the USS Darwin-A. Kael was formerly the Chief Engineer of the USS Vigilant so, he often had words of advice for James when he was just appointed the position on the Darwin. As time went by, the two of them became friends and James considers Kael as one of his chief influences in his later career. KaelThomas.jpg

Acquaintances

Tom Westerbridge - James only really knows Tom after from their disastrous Night out. Despite this James would like to know him better after all he was one of the few who mostly kept their cool that night... No-Graphic.jpeg
Oliver Weston - Given James' general dislike of secrecy, James was quite surprised to find that he quite liked Oliver - perhaps due to Oliver's somewhat atypical attitude to intelligence. Out of habit from the "Under a Black Flag" misson, James refers to him as Osazamasu, a Vulcan honorific translating to "Honored Spy". Oliver Weston.jpg

Coworkers

Jorus Cogud - James hardly knows Cogud, but he is intrigued by him and is interested in getting to know him better. He was also a direct co-worker, as Helmsman to James who then worked on Com/Ops. LtJorusCogud.png

Friends

Telice Shagan - James and Shagan where both on the same cadet cruse. They where quite surprised to see each other on the Discovery. Despite spending a year together, they did not know each other that well. Recently, James and Telice have reconciled their differences due to Telice's mistrust of Vulcans after a bad experience with a ambassador and now consider each other friends. Shagan.jpg
Kieran Collim - Girlfriend (at the time) of Telice Shagan. He mostly knows her through Telice, however he considers her a friend having spent shore leave with her and Telice in the past. During James' first shore leave on the Drake, James met back up with Kieran on SB118 to catch up. Unfortunately, it was interrupted by a call from James' XO David Whale, ordering James to a breifing. Kieranprofile small.png
Wanda DyAmone - James met Wanda when they split into two teams from the away team in the Back to the Future mission. Tensions where high yet Wanda still seemed to mostly remain mostlly logical and insightful, which earned James' respect. In many ways she also reminds him of his friend Telice. Recently the two spent some time together socially and have become friends. Wanda DyAmone.jpg
Ezri Otner - A unjoined trill and James roommate for much of James time in the academy. Due to James somewhat antisocial nature she was probably the only relationship he formed during these years and even that was one of necessity owing to her position as his roommate. She and James have recently reconnected over dinner, since she was assigned to the same ship as him. Ezri Otner.jpg
Aigle Phos - James and Aigle met when they shared their free time together while traveling to the USS Darwin-A. She has since been assigned to the same Compartment as him on the ship. He rather likes the older Ensign and finds her insights on energy, unique to her from her abilities and her training, rather fascinating. Aigle Phos.png
Raj Blueheart - As well as a mentor, James considers Raj a true friend. Since leaving the Discovery James hs tried his best to maintain contact with him and still provides meditation lessons from time to time. Both parties were quite shocked at how much each had when they recently met up for a second lesson via the holodeck, but in a very good way. They have agreed that they need to do it again and more often this time. Cmdr Raj Blueheart1.png

Familly

James and Kyryn Family Tree.png
Note: This tree is not necessarily complete. It includes only those family member revealed IC.

S'Bok - James' Father. Growing up he did not see as much of him as he would have liked too, however that has caused no resentment. Despite his unavailability, or perhaps as a result of it, S'Bok took great efforts to be a good Father and teacher to his son. S'Bok.jpg
Kaname Nakamura - James' Mother. She is directly responsible for James love for all things electrical due in part to the exposure he received from her job in the Daystrom Institute. As a result he had large access to old tech growing up. Behind that his Mother is also one of the few friends he had growing up and is still, in his mind, his greatest teacher. Kaname Nakamura.jpg
Admiral Sousuke Nakamura - James' Maternal Grandfather and a retired naval Admiral. James can still clearly remember his old story's of life on the sea. While the federation's navy was mostly for historical purposes by this point, Sousuke still described it with passion. This probably had influence on James' decision to join Starfleet. Sousuke also taught James how to play several card games, despite his parents objections and, although indirectly, how to curse like a sailor in several different languages! Sousuke Nakamura.jpg
Elizabeth Nakamura - James' Maternal Grandmother. James would often spend time with her on Earth while his Mother and Father where away on business. After Sousuke's death she withdrew into herself somewhat. Elizabeth Nakamura.jpg
Satel - James' paternal grandfather. Until his Death when James was 13 years old, James would sometimes spend time living with him while his parents where away. James always thought he looked sad, despite his logical exterior, perhaps because his his wife's passing some 30 years before James' birth. James would usually spend his visits playing games of logic, such as chess or when James was older Kal-Toh, or meditating. In fact James can probably trace back much of his Vulcan cultural knowledge to his Grandfather. Satel.jpg
Katelyn Barrett - James' paternal grandmother. She died aproximatlly 30 years before James was born. His father and grandfather didn't talk of her much so James' knowledge of her and that side of his family, is almost non-existent. No-Graphic.jpeg

Educational History

  • Passed Kahs-Wan at age 11.
  • Left Shi'kahr Academy with honours.
  • Joined Starfleet Academy
James Diploma.png

During James' years in Shi'kahr Academy James was academically exceptional in certain areas such as Physics, although this is perhaps more due to exposure to James' fathers work than anything else. He was though without doubt skilled at problem solving. Perhaps in contrast to his academic achievements was his physical and social ones. As already mentioned, James did not do well socially at school facing ridicule from some of his classmates due to his mixed heritage. As for his physical achievements they can be best summed up by the words of his teacher to his mother, "James is certainly... Trying".

For more information on James' time in Shi'kahr Academy his School Report is available from the Library Computer Access and Retrieval System.

In the Academy James particularly enjoyed studying Artificial Intelligence and Warp Drives, receiving high marks in both areas. In contrast James did not enjoy or show much skill for Diplomacy causing more confusion and irritation than understanding. The same issues existed in Introduction to Starship Combat, due to James' reluctance towards physical activity. When it came to elected credits James chose to once again play his strengths opting for more subjects related to computers and warp mechanics. James found the Vibrations and Waves course in particular to be very challenging, if not somewhat fun. This did however lead to James' only disciplinary for creating a large electromagnet in his quarters. It did however get him full marks in his Electromagnetics and Applications project.

For more information on James' time in Starfleet Academy his Academy Record is available from the Library Computer Access and Retrieval System.

Professional History

  • Date Graduated from Academy: 238906.18
  • Current Rank: Lieutenant Commander
  • Current Assignment: Deep Space 285
  • Duty Post: First Officer

Aboard the USS Discovery-C James' duties were mostly concerned with the management of power across the vessel as well as managing inter-ship communications. For instance, during the mission Zero Tolerance, James had to manage the commchannel between the Discovery and the Achilles, to ensure no interruptions as well instigating a frantic search for a replacement host for the Symbiont of PO 2nd Class D'ona Helron. He also managed the docking process with DS-285.

On the USS Drake, however, James' duties mostly consisted of attempting to repair the aging ship from the disasters his crewmates saw fit to throw it into. He also had a place on the away team, where he applied his usual brand of logic and technical understanding. During the Back to the Future mission, James also engineered a solution to allow the Drake to interact with the systems of the Drake' even if it was eventually unused.

During his time on the Drake, James also participated in a special joint mission with FedSec, where he went undercover with the crew of the Leviathan to attempt to foil a terrorist plot against the federation. During the mission James' computer skills came in use subverting their foe's systems and even finding key evidence of their target. He was also part of the team that assaulted the leader Tomic's ship, the Rapier, which lead to defeat of him.

James' transfer to Starbase 118 also came with a promotion to Lieutenant and the position of Assistant Chief Engineering Officer. Working with his Chief Engineering Officer, Pandora, they decided to split the responsibilities between the two of them, with Pandora taking charge of Engineering on the base itself and James taking charge of the Drydock ship repairs.

To his surprise, after his transfer to the USS Darwin-A he was appointed to Chief of Engineering by Commander Greir Reinard. While initially apprehensive of the new responsibility, it quickly gave way to excitement.

Typical Day

Starbase 118

As James favours the Beta shift (1400 to 2200 hours), he will generally wake at approximately 1200 hours. He will then go into his washroom, take a sonic shower and perform his other daily ablutions. By this point he will either have decided what he wants for breakfast or have a general idea, so he will precede to order it from his replicator and eat it on his dining table while reading the news on his PADD.

By the time James has usually finished his 3rd cup of tea, he is ready to leave his apartment. Before going to work he will first, however, make his way to the commercial sector where he will buy his lunch. Usually this will be a sandwich from a deli or other food that he can eat quickly on the go. He will then make his way further down to the Engineering Section where he will have his daily meeting with Lt. Pandora at precisely 1230 hours.

James will arrive at his office at 1300 hours to begin his shift, with the exception of Fridays where he has a slightly longer meeting with Lt. Pandora, so he won't arrive until 1330. He will then spend the next three hours filling out paperwork, meeting people and generally performing admin duties. By the time this has ended he will typically be on his 10th cup off tea for the day.

At 1600 hours James will begin his walk around the Drydock. While he never makes his way around the whole dock (Which given its girth would be impossible to do in three hours) he does try to see all of the major points and any areas of concern. During this he will interact with the yard crew and ensure everything is working optimally.

The last three hours of his shift are spent working on the bases permanent residents. As there are approximately 30 ships, James keeps them on a monthly check rotation, typically preforming one check per day. James will personally handle the checks along with the teams assigned to them. This is his favorite part of his shift as he gets to not only finally do some hands on work, but also because he gets to interact with many wonderful ships even if most of the time he doesn't actually get to do anything to them. James takes the policy of ensuring all of the mothballed ships are in good enough condition that they could be launched within days of a request being made.

After his shift James will typically withdraw to his quarters. Occasionally, he may either have a social event to attend or may just want to eat out for a night, but generally this is not the case. When he gets home the first thing he will do is get changed and have a sonic shower. Even if he does have a social event he will generally do this anyway. After that he will have dinner and start to work on his personal projects on his workbench for another three or so hours.

At about 0100 hours he will get changed and ready for bed, which he aims to have at about 0400 hours. In the intervening time James will usually read, watch old shows on his Desktop Viewer or do some research.

USS Darwin-A

Perhaps due to the ships size and his position, James never really feels totally off duty. His waking time is now very dependant on what time his last shift ended or the last disaster ended, however he tries to keep to the Beta shift (1400 to 2200 hours), he will generally wake at approximately 1200 hours when he has the chance to do this. He will then go into his washroom, take a sonic shower and preform his other daily ablutions. By this point he will either have decided what he wants for breakfast or have a general idea, so he will precede to order it from his replicator and eat it on his dining table while reading the news on his PADD.

By the time James has usually finished his 3rd cup of tea, he is ready to leave the residence. Before going to work he will first, replicate a packed lunch so he doesn't have to interrupt his work to search for food.

James will arrive at his office at 1300 hours to begin his shift, He will then spend the next three hours filling out paperwork, meeting people and generally performing admin duties. By the time this has ended he will typically be on his 10th cup off tea for the day. This is his least favorite time of the day, fortunately it is more usually necessary for him to go deal with something in main engineering.

For the rest of his shift, James will spend his time in main engineering. He considers this a time to sit down with the ships systems and ensure they are preforming at peak efficiency and to try out new improvements to them. He actively encourages those under him to come to him with ideas for any improvements and also tries to keep himself abreast of the latest theories in Warp Mechanics and engine design.

After his shift James will typically withdraw to his quarters. Occasionally, he may either have a social event to attend or may just want to eat out for a night in The Evolution Bar, but generally this is not the case.

Of late he does far more research than anything else..
