The USS Ranger-A is a Nebula Class starship, which began its career under the experienced command of Rear Admiral Brian Kelly. The Ranger-A was a direct replacement for the USS Ranger, which was lost on Stardate 237403.11.

The Ranger is a powerful military vessel. It has its mission brief officially classed as Escort, however it is well known that the Ranger-A is dedicated to the dangerous missions involved in defending the Federation from external enemies. The Ranger-A has proved its might many times, and defended many Federation lives.

The location of the Ranger-A is, more often than that not, highly classified for obvious reasons, as most of the time the vessel is serving behind enemy lines.

The Nebula class vessel was intended as a more numerous counterpart to the Galaxy class project. Although much smaller, the Nebula class can support the performance of almost 90% of the missions of a Galaxy class vessel. This is due to the flexibility of the interchangeable 'mission pod' on the Nebula class vessel. The Ranger-A is fitted with a modified weapons/tactical pod as standard.

In early 2379 command of the ship was given to Commander James Terra, who received a promotion a few months later. When he took a leave of absence from the fleet, Captain Cheyenne Skye, daughter of famous shipping tycoon Milton Skye, took command. After a massive systems failure which was the result of an attempt to disable the computer by hijackers from the Mirror Dimension, the ship was returned to spacedock to begin a massive computer and internal overhaul.

The Ranger-A also has its sister ship stationed at StarBase 118, the USS Indria-A.
