Named for the Roman goddess of the dawn in Terran mythology, the USS Aurora was launched from the Antares Ship Yards in March of 2382 and delivered to StarBase 118 for assignment in April of 2382. Her first Commanding Officer was Cmdr. Megan Parker, whose first mission was a Search-and-Rescue operation for members of a Federation Observation Team that went missing on Caraban II. All members of the team were recovered save for one, who was murdered by suspicious locals after having wandered into a town under the influence of indigenous flora. Subsequently, the Aurora was assigned to a highly-unusual mission involving relief for Romulan citizens suffering from a plague. They were escorted into Romulan space, and were able to cure the local population of the affected planet.

The Nova Class was designed as a modern replacement for the long serving Oberth Class science vessel. The requirement called for a ship capable of making relatively short duration missions; Starfleet intended to use these ships in the large unexplored areas between Federation controlled space, missions which would typically be staged out of Starbases and last for a few months up to a year at most.
Shortly thereafter, now-Captain Parker fell sick to a mysterious virus and was dropped off at Star Fleet Medical, and the ship was reassigned to short-range anthropological missions with civilizations along the Romulan Neutral Zone, under the command of Malcolm Lysander. Over the course of six nine-month missions, the Aurora was involved in a number of important new discoveries regarding the migration of early Romulans.

Aggressively designed, the small ship and its lack of amenities manage to surpass one's first impression of its diminutive size. Known for its durability, the Nova Class has swiftly loss its status as a "little ship" and is slowly gaining acclaim for their usefulness in making for more accurate missions to new areas of space, bringing back teraquads of data on individual systems that is disseminated amongst the fleets.
With those missions complete, the Aurora returned to space-dock for an major refit, which was completed in January of 2388. She was then assigned to Cmdr. Della Vetri in February of that year, a cruise that lasted until Vetri's promotion to Captain and the reassignment of herself and her crew to the newly-commissioned USS Avandar.

The Nova sports impressive weaponry for its size, and its scientific capabilities more than make up for its reduction in speed when compared to its larger "cousins." Double deflector dishes also provide added security when far from a starbase or suitable repair facility, in that a single malfunctioning or damaged deflector will not prevent the ship from going to warp.

Highly accurate sensors and computer systems makes it the perfect tool to send into scarcely known territory and many discoveries have been made by Nova Classes finding things larger Explorer-type ships such as the Galaxy Class left behind.

Amenities are few and far between on a Nova, but its work is important and crews that work on these small ships know their worth and protect their reputations fiercely. Much like the favored Oberth, the Nova is sure to hold a place in Starfleet lore for a long time to come.
