The Southern Cross, under the command of Captain Gabbeck, was a freighter dispatched to provide medical assistance to TE IV in 2384. Four weeks after being dispatched, Midway Repair Facility lost contact with the freighter. Three hours after the freighter was due to report in, Deep Space 17 received a distress call and detected the vessels emergency beacon. Telemetry from the beacon seemed to show the destruction of the frieghter.
Twenty Five hours after the frieghter was due to report in, the crew of the USS Independence-A was dispatched on the USS Phoenix-C to supply TE IV and investigate the freighters distress call.
