Biography

Valin Bartholomew Dermont was born Stardate 235101.18 in the small earth town of Murray, Kentucky to a pair of Federation agricultural scientists, Marcus and Helen. He was the second child of a total of four, and as such quickly found himself on his own more often than not. His parents had planned for him to attend Starfleet Academy when he was of age, just as his older sister had done, but life had other ideas. He met a young Betazoid woman whose father was part of an ambassadorial team. She found Valin's blunt demeanor a breath of fresh air, for so little did the telepath meet a person's whose outer words matched so honestly the thoughts within. And in 2371 Valin Dermont and Kyleanna Frezgoi left earth together and eloped.

The very next year, the two had their first born, Kurdan Dermont. Valin knew the odd jobs he had picked up were not going to cut it, and with a year had signed on with the Maddius Haulers, a member of the Bolian Freighter Coalition. Maddius was a hard working Bolian freighter captain who took on the young married couple and treated them as one of the family. His own elder son, Mazius, was the same age and the captain spent every waking moment teaching both boys everything he knew.

Maddius had a keen eye for business, and over the next several years had turned his single freighter company into one with over a dozen ships. Dermont saw this as an opportunity, and in 2380 he and Mazius approached a group of Ferengi credit lenders based on Bolarus IX and were able to strike a deal. The two of them purchased the BSC Endurance, with Valin as the captain and Mazius as his first officer. They immediately signed on with the Maddius Haulers. Valin and Kyleanna hosted a party in celebration at the apartment on Bolarus. It must have been quite the evening, for shortly thereafter their daughter Brienna Dermont was born.

Tragedy struck in 2385. On their way back to Deep Space Six, something pulled their ship out of warp. It was an EMP pulse of some kind, affecting most of their systems. They found themselves in the middle of some kind of asteroid field that had not been on sensors previously. Without shields or deflectors, as well as engines, they found themselves smashed about in the field. After coming to rest on a large asteroid, the freighter found itself boarded by Romulans. Using equipment he had never seen before, the Romulans slaughtered everyone on board and stole their cargo. Valin only survived due to an explosion in the engine room which masked his life-signs but left him pinned for dead under debris. It was only a fortunate stroke that his family had been visiting family on Betazed during this incident. He spent two days trapped before he was found by a Starfleet vessel.

Seeing his friends die and his livelihood destroyed sent Valin into a great depression. His once cheerful and almost playful demeanor was replaced by one of fury and self-loathing. Everyone under his command was dead. His employer, Maddius, held no blame towards Dermont and even offered him another place in his company. However, Valin could not bring himself to look his best friend's father in the eyes and instead hid away in his apartment. Also, the Ferengi had come calling as Valin was behind on the loan payments. They did not care of the tragedy that had struck and a pair of Nausicaans came by to remind Valin of his obligations.

This time was exceptionally hard on Valin's family. Being telepaths they picked up on Valin's dark mood. Kurdan was old enough to understand but young Brienna could not process how her father was behaving. Kyleanna tried to get through to her husband, but after a couple of years decided enough was enough and moved back to Betazed, taking the children and filing for divorce.

The next year he received a letter saying how Kurdan how joined Starfleet Academy. That he was doing something with his life. Valin looked at a video of his son, looking so handsome and proud in his cadet uniform. It was a wakeup call. He was going to prove that he would be worthy of his family again. He was going to stop the self-pity and be part of something bigger than just his own meager existence. And Starfleet was just the way to do that. In 2390 he joined his son at the Academy.

He graduated Starfleet Academy on stardate 239410.04

Academy Notations

"Cadet Dermont has more recorded flight time than my two junior flight instructors combined. Given his success on the written exam and previous test flights, it was an assumption that this exam would be easily one of his best. Everything was fine, and he had received full marks through the obstacle course. We were nearing the landing pad, and as always the cadets are required to land manually. Dermont was coming in perfectly, but at the last second he angled the nose of the shuttle up and we ended up overshooting the landing zone by almost sixty meters. Needless to say, this ended up severely hindering his final score. When I questioned him on what happened, he merely shrugged and apologized for misjudging. I must put in a note saying I question this reason. I have flow over two hundred final flight tests and his original vector was near perfect and can only speculate whether the overshoot was intentional."

Lieutenant Commander Hal Northcrop, Starfleet Academy Senior Flight Instructor

"Cadet Dermont knows his mechanical theories. And while, sure, he is better with the hands-on aspect of the engineering job, he nonetheless scored excellently in all aspects of the engineering classes. Certainly well enough to be placed on a ship in the fleet. However, I just have to note this for whatever Captain may deem it worth reading. Dermont just might not be material fit for running his own crew. Now, I know his background, but I didn't see it today. We were in his final exam...a holo exercise where he takes over the role of Chief Engineer. It is designed to see how much information he has assimilated throughout his last year and to see how he applies it in on board a vessel. He was handling things pretty well, but at key times he failed to order the crewman to perform procedures that would have solved the problem before him. A problem that he answered without issue in the written section, not an hour before. So he is either forgetting how to translate the knowledge he has into a command format or he was failing to do so intentionally. I suppose only time will tell which one. I suggest retesting one year into his commission."

Commander Jotyon Rith'tael, Starfleet Academy Chief-Tester Engineering Overview

"I cannot go into the details of Dermont's case, as I will not breach his confidence. That will be a matter between his next counselor and myself. However, I can give some insight into his professional demeanor. He is a man with issues which at times may hinder his ability to take charge. He appears to freeze during moments that hinge on his decision-making skills. It is no breach of confidence to say that the tragedy continues to be a sore spot in his life. Be warned future commanding officers, he does not like to speak of that past. It lead to the alienation of his wife and children. And while he had joined Starfleet in an effort to move past it, it will be a long and challenging road for him. Despite his objections, I have put in his file for him to continue weekly counseling at whatever posting he may receive."

Lieutenant Helean V'Chauth, Academy Counselor
