Renos began nir career in Starfleet in 2379 assigned to Starbase 118 after graduating as a counselor with a specialisation in gender studies. It has long been a source of frustration that while ne can study the gender expression and history of many hundreds of Federation worlds, ne cannot study it in nir own species. In three years Renos worked hard and impressed nor bosses, rising to the respectable rank of Lieutenant.

Ne wasn't completely satisfied though and decided to upskill and train as a doctor having felt that there was still so much ne could do to help those who needed it most. Because ne'd already taken all the core courses at Starfleet Academy and had knowledge that was complimentary to nir new path, ne only needed to attend Starfleet medical and this cut the training time in half compared to what it'd be for someone going through the Academy for the first time.

By 2387 Renos had qualified as a doctor and was serving Starbase 118 in this new capacity and did so well that after about 6 months, ne had been promoted to assistant department head. The J'naii served in this role for three years before being reassigned to a space ship, the Odyssey class USS Apollo-A.

Unfortunately nir time there was limited and in 2392 ne was given nir biggest career boost to date. In response to the crisis at Prometheus Station, the USS Darwin-A was recommissioned in the Zeta Gelis Region under the command of newly promoted Commander Renos. While Starfleet had been looking to establish a stronger presence in the area — a region ripe with potential for scientific discovery and exploration - for some time, a distress call from a Starfleet survey vessel being pulled into an unidentified phenomenon prompted the emergency response. With fears that the phenomenon was the latest complication of the Prometheus Incident and the role of the mysterious Zalkonians still unknown, Starfleet tasked Commander Renos with assembling a team of officers from across the fleet to deal with it. Renos was promoted to Captain on 239206.03 after the conclusion of nir second mission in command. After a year in command of the Darwin Renos was promoted to Fleet Captain on 239302.27

Renos was promoted to Rear Admiral on Stardate 239402.24 by Rear Admiral Toni Turner. Later that year, Starfleet decided to commission Andaris Task Force, with the intention of helping to stabilize the Par'tha Expanse and strengthen ties with the Freeworlds. Rear Admiral Renos was appointed Region and Task Force Commander for the region and given four ships under nir command - the Olympic class USS Blackwell, the Intrepid class USS Atlantis, the Defiant class USS El Corazón and the Horizon class USS Darwin-A. On stardate 239410.09 Renos was very proud to appoint good friend and first officer of the Blackwell, Commander Brell commanding officer of the USS Atlantis.

Gender and preferred pronouns

The J'naii are a genderless, androgynous species. In their own tongue a neuter pronoun is used in lieu of "he" and "she," but there is no effective translation to English, which is why the preferred pronouns of Renos and many others is ne/nem/nir/nirs/nemself. Renos is considered a deviant because ne is genderfluid, on some days/in some situations ne identifies as male and at other times ne identifies as female. Nirs wardrobe consists of a mixture of feminine and masculine clothing and ne has two sets of duty uniforms so that ne can dress according to how ne is feeling on any particular day. When ne presents as female ne is happy being addressed with female pronouns, on days ne presents as male ne prefers masculine pronouns. This can be a lot to keep up with so if in doubt it is always preferable to use gender neutral pronouns to avoid offense as ne will be unhappy if addressed incorrectly.

Personality and Preferences

Personality: Renos has a naturally optimistic, bubbly and exuberant personality and can be seen frequently with a smile upon nir lips. Ne is highly organised and likes efficiency as can be seen in the way ne keeps nir quarters and ready room. As much as ne is often very friendly with others and likes getting to know them, ne is often very secretive, slow to trust and reluctant to let others get close to nem. Because of this ne can be uncomfortable around civilian telepathic and empathic individuals who ne doesn't trust as much as Starfleet personnel to abide by the reader's code. Renos isn't much of a stickler for the rules because experience shows that the rules are not always right.

Following a series of traumatic events in 2392 and 2393 which included torture at the hands of Raikenoff and later betrayal by Iy who kidnapped nem and subjected nem to psychotectic treatment alongside another deviant hunter ne suffered a crisis of identity. Ne became withdrawn, smiled less frequently, struggled to sleep and even feared it as it often brought vivid nightmares. With help from Kurt Logan, Dr Cook, Varaan, Brell, Lyldra and more, ne slowly began to rediscover nemself and reassert nir personality.

Fears:

  • Renos is afraid of being attacked by Klingon pain sticks after being tortured by one in 2393, during mission Breaching the Adversary. Ne came close to losing nir life and sustained injuries, including AF (atrial fibrillation), which threatened to end nir career. While recovering and receiving treatment Renos was left to wonder what ne would do without Starfleet and considered taking up full-time work with the Deviant Underground.

Interests

Commander Renos is a big fan of martial arts and is trained in several disciplines from across a number of cultures including:

  • Kaigut, a J'naii style favouring leg work, kicks and knock backs
  • Karate, a Terran martial art. It is predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes.
  • Mok'bara, a Klingon martial art. The technique is similar to meditation, as the forms are said to clear the mind. It is the basis of Klingon hand-to-hand combat techniques, and may be practised alone, or in groups. It involves weapons such as the bat'leth, mek'leth, d'k tahg, and lahj.
  • Suus Mahna, an ancient Vulcan martial art form, which is a purely defensive practice that takes years to master.

Pet-Peeves

  • Gets irritated when people assign genders to inanimate objects, for example, referring to the ship as being female, etc.

Dress Sense

Hair and Make-up

Using cuts of various lengths and styles, Renos is able to display nir personality and give a more masculine or feminine appearance depending on how ne is feeling and wishes to present nemself.

When wearing make-up Renos likes to keep things simple most of the time, using just enough eye-liner, eye shadow and foundation to produce a fresh, natural look.

On-Duty: Renos's dress preferences while on duty can be as varied as they are with off-duty clothing. When feeling in a more feminine mood ne is more likely to opt for skants, or the skirt and knee-length boots option with natural coloured tights. Other times ne opts for smart trousers and pants. The captain is often fond of the duty waistcoat and can be often seen wearing it alone or underneath nir standard jacket if ne's feeling the cold. While many people dislike the dress uniform because of the fit or what it represents, Renos quite enjoys getting dressed up in nir whites when the occasion calls for it feeling it makes nem look very smart.

Off-Duty: Renos is not a materialistic person and generally prefers to replicate clothes as needed, choosing from a selection of the latest fashions rather than store and reuse the same items over and over again. That said there were a few items ne chose to keep, which were non-replicated, handcrafted items with sentimental value. Some were more feminine, like the white robe with golden oriental pattern gifted to nem some years ago by a friend who had helped nem get settled on Earth. Some were more masculine, like the sleeveless black leather jacket nem liked to pair with a plain white t-shirt and dark sunglasses. After attempted psychotectic rehabilitation at the hands of deviant hunters in 2393 and the resulting identity crisis ne threw out all or nir clothes and kept only those items acceptable by typical J'naii standards.

Relationships

Family

Renos has not spoken to nir family for approximately 18 years. Ne is an outcast and runaway, rejected by nir family for being different to what is considered socially acceptable and holding different beliefs. Ne has now seen more years of nir life without the love and support of family around than with it. Renos is considered a criminal and because of that ne cannot ever return to J'naii, even if ne wanted to. Ne has had to rely on the goodwill and help of complete strangers to escape his home world and as a result always tries to help and treat others with the same kindness. Ne now puts nirs trust and faith in the friends ne has made on Earth and beyond.

Friends and Acquaintances

Traenor - Best friend and first love
Best Friend and First Love

Doctor Renos first met the scientist on the USS Apollo-A when he came into sickbay for his physical shortly after joining the crew. Ne noted some problems with the knee and discussed a way forward that was sensitive to the tall human's needs. A follow-up appointment was made for a less formal setting to discuss a matter Maxwell wanted advice about. They spent a little time together while part of a team doing a scavenger hunt. Doctor Renos enjoyed his company a good deal and discovered his love of Saurian Brandy.

They never got the chance to catch up again before Renos was called upon to re-launch the Darwin, however ne readily used nir new-found rights and privileges when gathering the elite crew needed to tackle an emergent problem in the Zeta Gelis region, so they were soon reunited. While serving together the two continued to develop their friendship and nir feelings grew beyond anything ne'd previously experienced. Unsure about how to deal with these emerging emotions ne retreated to the relative safety of the holodeck where ne created a holoprogram that approximated Maxwell as closely as possible. Things unraveled after a misunderstanding exposed nir actions leading to a fracture between the pair, which healed in time. Nir attempts to convey nir emotions backfired when the valentine's gift ne left for the man was destroyed by his pet dog. Will romance ever truly blossom between the pair? Ne lives in hope.

Avaris Torrin
  • Torrin
    • Civilian - USS Darwin-A
Avaris Torrin approached Renos when ne was in the Mess Hall of the USS Apollo-A, feeling pretty down one day after receiving a distressing message. He immediately identified the fact ne is a deviant and got nem talking in a way that rarely happens. Doctor Renos explained what the problem was in a big leap of faith and the Trill responded by offering to help nir friend in need. At first eh J'naii was reluctant to accept but Avaris took some pretty bold steps to prove he could be trusted building a bridge that would allow Renos to let him in. Ne hopes that Avaris will prove to be not just a useful ally, but trusted friend.
When Renos was promoted and given Command of the USS Darwin, ne faced going it alone very far from all nir contacts under an increased workload. If nir work with the J'naii underground railway was to continue ne needed help and readily used nir powers to transfer Artem Dragumov to nir crew, knowing it would bring Avaris, the person ne needed most. He was furious about the move at first and it caused a heated rown between them, which resolved in him agreeing to continue support. He was soon in need of support himself when he realised the USS Dunbar was in the region and feared that there might be crew aboar that ship who would recognise him years after a very unfortunate kidnapping incident. The revelation put the Captain in a very awkward spot, torn between a friend and supporter and Starfleet duty.

Background

Renos is deliberately vague and has infrequently confided in others about nir past, only doing so with those ne has got to know over a long period of time, or more unusually those ne strikes a connection with quickly. That said there are some things ne will talk more freely about such as the fact ne left nir home world in 2373, a turbulent year that ne will never forget. Renos had been forced to seek asylum on Earth and was fortunate to have been granted it. It took a number of individuals to get nem off of J'naii and not all of them were affiliated with the Federation. It took a number of months to settle in on Earth and even more for the culture shock to wear off. As ne began to learn of all the different species that make up or are aligned to the Federation, ne increasingly found ne identifies more with other cultures than nir own.

As ne settled in more he began to think about the future - ne decided ne wanted to spend it helping others. Back on J'naii ne had just started college and had been studying to be a psychologist so ne looked at similar careers before deciding to choose a career in counselling. Renos applied to several courses but when ne saw some recruitment material from Starfleet ne knew right away and passionately that this was the path for nem. It took a bit of doing to secure the necessary endorsements but nir charming disposition and passion for it helped to counter any initial shortfall in education or other doubts. When given the chance to take pre-entry tests ne knew ne had to give it everything as there would be no seconds chances. Fortunately, it paid off and in 2375 nir training began. Renos has always been incredibly thankful for the Federation for granting nem asylum and to Starfleet for giving nem a rich and fulfilling career that enables nem to chase nir dreams. Ne always gives thanks for nir breaks in life and wants to help others flourish too, especially those facing any sort of disadvantage as ne understands struggle and hardship better than most.

Quarters

When choosing bed linen, paintings and other decorative features to personalise nir space, Renos prefers to avoid colours associated too much with one gender or another such as pinks and blues. While they may appeal to nem while ne is in a feminine or masculine mood, ne tends not to like them so much when ne is in the other mood. For this reason ne favours browns, and fresh spring colours or warm autumnal colours.

USS Apollo-A

Quarters on Apollo-A

Renos is a visually oriented individual who likes to add small touches to nir living space to personalise it in meaningful ways with items of significance to nem, such as Daruma Dolls. While aboard the Odyssey Class USS Apollo, Renos had large, luxurious quarters befitting nir rank of Lieutenant Commander and position as Chief Medical Officer. Being a highly organised person, ne liked to have a place for everything and everything in its place. Of particular note was nir wardrobe, which had a divider splitting the wide unit into two halves. Masculine clothes, footwear, accessories and grooming kit filled one-half while feminine equivalent items were in the other. The clothes were ordered first by item type and then colour.

Elsewhere in the room ne displayed a couple of pictures of old friends from Starbase 118 that ne intended to keep in touch with. It was nir hope that having their smiling faces dotted around the place would serve as a visual reminder to place a subspace call to them from time to time. A yellow Daruma doll took centre stage on nir dining table, as ne wanted it displayed in a prominent place to serve as a constant reminder of the goal ne'd set.

Darumas

Daruma Doll

Ne first learned of Daruma Dolls and the traditions surrounding them from another Academy Cadet who came from a traditional family in Japan. The doll is designed to get back up when it falls, embodying the essence of the famous Japanese proverb – fall down seven times and stand up eight. The Daruma is commonly regarded in Japanese society as both a good luck charm and a constant reminder of one’s goals. Ne thought it was an interesting idea and after completing nir first one has never looked back.

Yellow Daruma A1: This Daruma was made just prior to leaving starbase 118 to join the crew of the USS Apollo-A. The goal it represented was to help a fellow deviant relocate off-world and start a new, happier life. The doll was not yellow by accident as the colour symbolises security and protection and is appropriate to the goal ne had selected to focus on. The doll only one eye has been painted and is kept in a prominent place so it is seen often and serves to remind nem of nir goal. Renos has been in regular if infrequent contact with an individual back home. Ne can relate to the problems facing nem and has been giving as much help and support as ne is able to. Ne hopes to be able to get this individual off-world within the next twelve months and cannot imagine not achieving the goal. Ne intends to paint in the second eye once this is achieved. The doll could then be burned in a special ceremony at which point ne would pick up a new one and set a new goal.

It was to Renos's great disappointment ne would later learn the individual ne'd sworn to serve had been killed by a mob. The doll lingered as a reminder of them and the life lost to deviant hate. Eventually Dr Cook was able to persuade nem to let the doll go, feeling it was unhealthy for nem to have what he saw as 'reminders of failure', lying around.

USS Apollo-A

Lt Cmdr. Renos, CMO, USS Apollo-A

When Doctor Renos was reassigned to the USS Apollo-A as a chief medical officer the Odyssey class ship was between missions. This represented a step up for the J'naii from the position of assistant chief that ne'd held for 4 years. Some people might have expressed disappointment at not having advanced sooner and Renos has never been unambitious, however the position and its responsibilities had always suited nem just right and allowed nem to continue with other, more personal projects that held equal value to nem. As exciting as it was to move to a ship based assignment after working on Starbase 118 for the entirety of nir 13 years in Starfleet as a comissioned officer, it also led to the worry that continuing nir personal projects would prove to be more difficult.

The J'naii didn't have much time to worry about it as ne was very quickly put to work doing physical exams for the crew, many of whom were new and hadn't had the chance to get such things squared away yet. While the ship was on shore leave at Starbase 118, Renos was lucky to be included in a team building exercise where ne began to make friends with Collim Kieran, Dial and Maxwell Traenor who ne had seen previously in sickbay. The scientist had made a good impression on nem and so the J'naii had been particularly looking forward to working with nem. During the team building exercise small groups of officers competed in a scavenger hunt, taksed with working together to solve clues to get to the next activity. Their first task had been a drinks tasting session where they'd had to choose the 'best' from a selection of 5 drinks, which all had a claim to the title for one reason or another. After much deliberation the Saurian Brandy in particular had become a firm favourite and they'd selected it as the 'best drink' winning a bottle of it and their next clue in the process.

Later Doctor Renos and nir department was faced with one of its biggest mysteries - Fleet Captain Kali Nicholotti was picked up by the Apollo-A having seemingly come back from the dead. While she could not remember any of the people she had been attached to, or life experiences she still retained all of her former skills, though to her it felt like something read out of a textbook. The memory loss was extensive as it was selective. Subtle differences had been detected between the Kali Starfleet medical knew and the one they had before them. The change in eye colour from an off gret tone to bright cerullian blue. The CMO's first taks had been to do an in-depth physical exam including bloodwork, detailed scanning, an optical examination to look for hints of implants or eye conditions to explain the changes to the eye, and a physical fitness test to determine whether Kali was fit for duty or not. Following that she was sent for a psych eval with the counseling staff. While Kali was found to be fit for duty, there is still a lot of work to be done to help Kali get her memories back. Since Renos and Kali were both reassigned to different vessels, it will be someone else's job to pick up the threads of that investigation.

USS Darwin-A

The Lost Souls

Cmdr Renos, CO, USS Darwin-A

In response to the crisis at Prometheus Station, the USS Darwin-A was recommissioned in the Zeta Gelis region and Commander Renos was to be the Captain. While Starfleet had been looking to establish a stronger presence in the area—a region ripe with potential for scientific discovery and exploration—for some time, a distress call from a Starfleet survey vessel being pulled into an unidentified phenomenon has prompted the emergency response. With fears that the phenomenon is the latest complication of the Prometheus Incident and the role of the mysterious Zalkonians still unknown, Starfleet has tasked Commander Renos, who has experience with the mysterious, xenophobic species, to assemble a team of officers from across the fleet. Renos had passed nir bridge officer exam but felt under prepared due to a lack of bridge experience.

Arriving on the scene ne quickly got a status report from the Dunbar and sent over a team to support the exhausted freighter crew. On the bridge they kept a wary eye out for signs of Zalokonians or trouble in the area while trying to study and get to grips with the volatile anomaly. There were tense moments where they had to declare a communications blackout and their shuttle was blown out the back of the freighter when it suffered a hull breach! The most difficult thing in seeing that unfold was not knowing how the away team where doing and whether anyone had been injured or killed.

Things were further complicated when it turned out one of their civilians, Avaris Torrin had previously had a run in with the Dunbar after kidnapping one of their officers. It put nem in a very awkward position, which ne handle as tactfully and carefully as possible. There were problems with the sensors and at times, it felt as if the anomaly might well win. Ne felt out of nir comfort zone through much of the mission and tried hard to hide that from the crew and Commander Kael Thomas, their chief engineer, who seemed so in his element and confident. Renos took things in nir stride and remained strong even when officers were disappearing before nir very eyes!

Dr Renos receives a message from Teren, a J'naii diplomat stationed aboard Starbase 118. On the face of things it is a simple conversation between friends but ne has big expectations of the hidden contents and goes to some trouble to keep the message private and off the grid. The doctor is in for a surprise as the message is not as expected.
Dr Renos views the video message and is deeply troubled and emotionally moved by it because of the way it resonates with nir own experiences, as a result ne feels compelled to act.
