Lyara Alroyo was born on Bajor in the province of Kendra to Lyara Hana and Lyara Deren. Her parents had separated amicably shortly after she was born, but she had a good relationship with both of them. When she was Eight, her mother met Francis Giardano, a Starfleet officer who was visiting Bajor for geological work. They soon got married, and she quickly adapted to her new stepfather. They remained on Bajor while her step-father would go on deployments then come back to visit her and her mother before he'd go out again.
She loved hearing stories about Starfleet and their expeditions from her father, and she'd frequently ask her mother stories about the Federation aiding Bajor after the Cardassian occupation and during the Dominion War. These stories she heard growing up made her want to become a Starfleet member the second she was old enough to join so she can help others the way Starfleet helped her family.
She studied hard before she applied for the academy and got in after a failed try. While at the academy, she majored in Communications/Operations with a minor in Helm/Navigation. Her intention was to hopefully have a career in command, eventually becoming a Commander. During her time at the academy, she tried out for and joined a flight team.
