(Description Here)

Background

Tho’Bi’s parents were both Starfleet engineers, having met at the Academy.  They often joked that their relationship was based on a lack of options.

Though not always assigned to the same ship, his parents decided to keep their son with them.  The original idea was to have Tho’Bi move from vessel to vessel depending on which best suited his parents’ assignments.  However, from the age of 6 onwards he lived with his mother on Deep Space 3, while his Father pursued a career that increasingly focused on becoming a command officer.

Hospital Ship

On stardate 237903.19, Tho’Bi was born aboard a Starfleet Hospital ship. Unlike natural Andorian conception, that involves four Andorians to provide the required Genetic code, Tho'Bi was conceived using only the code of his two parents. This was done by an experimental technique that use the transporter pattern codes of two other Andorians, to provide the required additional DNA. Within that coding, a random factor was introduced to each of the 'pattern donors' to make the DNA unique.

Tho'Bi had to remain on the Hospital Ship until he was one year old, to ensure the stability of his genetics. He spent large amounts of his time alone during this period.

From age of 1 until around 5 - 6 years old, Tho'Bi would spend periods of months at a time on the Hospital Ship, as various aliments and genetic instabilities showed up. When on the Hospital Ship, he was mostly isolated.

Personality

Applying to the Academy was a natural step for Tho’Bi. He feels at home on starships and is accustomed to being around people from all over the Alpha and Beta quadrants. While still prone to the Andorian temperament, having grown up around many different peoples means Tho’Bi is more accustomed to controlling his strong surges of emotion. He is however still inclined to enjoy an argument and can be combative in his tone. He can be prone to nerves when first meeting people. This inclines him to alternate between being stand offish and awkwardly trying a bit too hard. He is happiest around people he knows and, of course, machines. When nervous, he often worries his antenna are wonky.

Family

His parents are extremely proud of his decision to join Starfleet. His extended family, less so. Many of his relatives back in Andorian space looked down on his parents choice of Starfleet, rather than Andoria’s own Imperial Guard. He has only visited Andoria a few times and mainly when he was very young. His parents worry that, given his Starfleet upbringing, Tho’Bi would struggle to deliver a fatal blow if ever challenged under the right of Ushaan (Andorian duel to the death). Moreover, they worry that members of their own family might be inclined to such an action (to balance the perceived dishonor of their and their son’s place in Starfeet).

Growing Up in Space

Growing up Andorian around a mix of species, his childhood had been a series of painful lessons learned; often physically painful for others and emotionally painful for him. As he grew, so did his Andorian strength. As he grew, so did his turbulence of his Andorian emotions. In the beginning, even well-meaning play could result in playmates sent sprawling wildly towards the nearest bulkhead. He would run to jefferies tubes to hide; the shrill shriek of parental outrage echoing about his antennae. Gradually, he learned to measure his strength to the measure of those with whom he played.

Deep Space 3

Around Stardate 238605.18, Tho'Bi was living with his mother who was assigned to Deep Space 3 in the Beta Quadrant. This was the first time he had experienced people from outside the Federation. Part of his mother's engineering duties was to tend to a wide variety of Federation and non-Federation ships alike. Tho'Bi would quite often find himself aboard Deep Space Freighters. The crews could be a clannish people; some descended from the very first sub-light freighter crews, fusion-powered spacecraft that ventured between worlds in great protracted trajectories spanning years. Their culture was one in suspended animation, separate from the wider galaxy, and so too was their slang. Tho'Bi picked up an eclectic mix of slang and phrase, of which one of his favorites proved to be, 'Disco Biscuits', meaning 'excellent'.

Though difficult to say exactly when it first started, it was also around this time his mother noticed it. The other children would play together until tired; and once tired, would happily nap or enjoy quiet time together; but not her six-year-old Andorian boy, after a time with his peers, he would seek out the company of machines. His mother equated this compulsion as being akin to charging his batteries.

Tho’Bi was six years old when he met his best friend, Zee. Though only catering for less than a dozen children, the young Andorian boy found the chaotic mess of noise and movement of the elementary class too much; he retreated, instead, to set of interactive blocks, each block reacted differently with each other block, in terms of shape and function; the result was an ever-evolving cognitive test of spacial and engineering awareness, designed to prepare young Federation members, for possible service in Starfleet.

As he worked the blocks, his antennae picked up a pattern within the apparent chaos of noise and movement; six-year-old Tho’Bi looked up from behind his blocks, a Ferengi boy was moving from child to child; he was smaller in statue than the other children, but either unaware or undeterred by this fact; the Ferengi boy spied Tho’Bi, hiding behind his blocks, and promptly strode over. “Ah!” The Ferengi gesture with his hand. “You must be Tho’Bi!”

Before the young Andorian had time to stutter a response, a sticker with his name had been slapped onto his chest. The Ferengi boy nodded and smiled a broad, uneven-tooth-filled smile. He pointed to his own sticker, “I’m Zee! Nice to meet you!” “Di-Did the te-teacher tell you to…”, as Tho’Bi’s words ground to a nervous halt, he instead pointed at the sticker on his chest. “No!” Without asking, Zee dropped down next to him, “Think of it as… networking!” The Ferengi made a grand sweeping gesture with his hand.

He and Zee had developed at technique for dry cleaning and pressing clothes; it involved, attaching Comms Badges to clothes, beaming them into open space, and then beaming the back. They made pretty good money from it, until they’d beamed a visiting diplomat’s formal dress into space, without realizing he had a flask in his pocket. The water-based beverage expanded rapidly as it froze, it exploded, ruining the diplomat’s formal dress and causing a station wide alert; as the explosion was sufficient to trigger station security measures.

The Academy

While all his contemporaries had raced after the cutting edge fields of Trans-Warp, Temporal Shift, and Multiphasic shields, he had looked backwards and sideways. Tho'Bi specialized in Fusion and alternative power sources.

SIM Archive

Replace the links below with links to your own SIMs that you find memorable or are important to your character - you may want to add more as your time with the fleet goes on! You can find a complete archive of sims here at the SIM Archive.
To end your bio, we're going to drop in some code here for your ship's crew template, which should appear at the bottom of your bio and will help members of the fleet easily browse other bios of your shipmates. Change the name of the ship below to whatever the name of your character's ship is, unless of course you've been assigned to the USS Gemini! Don't forget the letter suffix for your ship if yours has one (such as the USS Darwin-A).
