At the same time he was elevated up to the Assistant Chief Tactical Officers position by his direct department head, Major Greaves.
The end of the 2399 was not what Jack expected or had hoped for. Late in the year, the USS Caboto, the ship Jack's father commanded was declared Missing In Action while in the Gamma quadrant on a diplomatic assignment. A multi-ship search was conducted for the Caboto, including the USS 'Oumuamua which resulted in several children from the Caboto being discovered and rescued but the ship and crew remained lost. During this incident, one of the children rescued turned out to be Jack's younger cousin Krystal who had been aboard the Caboto. Jack would later learn that his parents had adopted Krystal following the death or her mother and the disappearance of her father. With no leads to go on Starfleet declared the Caboto and crew Lost and listed the vessel as Missing In Action. Jack has fought with this decision of Starfleet's and does not agree with it feeling that the species in the area known as the Zet had something far more sinister to do with the Caboto's disappearance.
On stardate 240002.04 Jack was promoted to the full rank of Lieutenant and assigned as the Chief Tactical Officer of the USS 'Oumuamua.
Following up on intelligence information obtained by Captain Dana Anderson on stardate 240009, Jack with the help of the 'Oumuamua's Intelligence Officer Avander Promontory, takes a team to a potential prison site of the Zet. Information pointed to captives including those from the USS Caboto being held at the site and with strong information pointing to either his father or mother being held at the site Jack jumped on the chance to take a team on a Search and Rescue. The mission led to the discovery and recovery of the USS Caboto's executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Roy Grant. The mission took a devastating turn when one team member took incoming fire and went down. The team moved to an emergency exit strategy but at a slower pace which allowed Zet security forces to catch up to them. In a last ditch effort to protect the team Jack turned back and blocked off the Zet from the retreating team and in doing so trapped himself with the Zet. Overwhelmed and significantly outnumbered Jack was eventually captured and taken prisoner by the Zet and moved to a new holding facility where he was held as a prisoner of the Zet. After five months as a prisoner of the Zet, Jack along with the help of a USS Caboto security officer, Ensign Radek; escaped the Zet facility and was rescued by the crew of the USS Octavia E. Butler. Following medical, psychological and Intelligence reviews Jack was reinstated to active duty and assigned to the Chief Tactical Officers role aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler on stardate 240106.12.

Personal

Early Life

Jack Kessler was born to parents JC and Maurine Kessler in Scotland, Earth. Although born on Earth Jack spent very little time on the planet due to his fathers Starfleet assignments off world. Jack is the only child of the Kessler’s and has spent his life growing up under the shadow of a Starfleet command officer and an Exo-Species Research biologist.

Interests / Hobbies

Jack loves time with his dogs, especially camping and hiking with them. Other interests for Jack include swimming, two-vs-two beach volley ball and holographic technology which has lead to the development of Logan and MK9. Logan is a fully integrated holographic Golden Retriever from Earth. Using a mobile emitter Logan is capable of going anywhere with Jack on or off the ship. In 2399 following an incident on the holodeck Nesre Salo adopted one of the rescued Tervuren puppies from Bora Bora, Earth and brought it aboard the USS 'Oumuamua for Jack as a gift. The puppy Nesre named Lilou has quickly become a great joy in Jack's life.

Relationships

V'Len Kel
V'Len served aboard the USS Thor and USS 'Oumuamua with Jack. Jack's first shore leave aboard the USS Thor joined him up with V'Len and several others for a trip to Bajor. Jack also enjoys V'Len's Holo-mysteries in which they act of Detectives in Earth's early 20th century. Jack has found these mysteries to be not only fun but challenging.
Nesre Salo
Jack fisrt met Nesre Salo aboard the USS Thor and along with V'Len Kel and Commodore Aaron Kells spent several days on Bajor with Nesre during shore leave. Jack enjoyed his time with Nesre and when their second shore leave came around she was one of the first people he asked to go to Bora Bora, Earth with him. The shore leave proved to be fun and even led to the rescue of a mother dog on the islands peak of Otemanu. Nesre shares a similar love for animals as Jack and something that he believes has brought them closer as friends. A few months later Nesre surprised Jack aboard ship with Lilou, one of the Tervuren puppies they had rescued from atop Bora Bora. This was a huge risk for Nesre that ended up meaning more to Jack than she could ever know.
Michele Winters
Jack met Michele at the Starfleet Academy and the two started dating almost immediately. Michele shares a love of the outdoors and animals with Jack and the to were almost married during their final year at the academy. Focusing on their careers first Jack took his assignment and Michele took hers and vowed to achieve their goals in Starfleet before starting their lives together. Following the disappearance of the US Caboto, Jack's fathers ship Michele had herself transferred to the 'Oumuamua so that she could be closer to Jack.

Starfleet Career

Jack graduated Starfleet Academy in 2399 with strong aptitudes in Diplomacy, Tactics and Engineering. He is an accomplished Tactics recruit but his ultimate passion or perceived passion is to have a starship command of his own.

Jack was assigned to the USS Thor as Tactical officer right out of the academy and quickly found himself on a crew that he could learn from and grow with. Jack however found his first assignment in the Delta quadrant much more of a challenge than he was expecting when his ship and crew were ingested by a large space born creature. The experience has brought new realizations to the fact that anything can happen in Starfleet.

Jack's assignment to the USS Thor ended on stardate 239905, following the near destruction of the ship. During his second mission aboard the Thor, the ship was assigned a mission to the Gamma Quadrant and to the Okaea star system. During this mission the Thor was ambushed by a pirate vessel leading to the Thor's emergency crash landing in one of the Okaea oceans. Along side his crew, Jack worked through what seemed to be an impossible endeavor to save the Thor and rescue the ships crew while defeating an enemy that tactically had proven superior initially to the Thor. The experience brought Jack closer to crewmembers that he had not really known and now considers many as friends.

On stardate 239906 Jack accepted an offer from Commodore V'Airu to transfer to the USS 'Oumuamua, a Luna Class starship. Several days later at a ship wide awards ceremony Jack was awarded his second Captains Commendation for his ingenuity and grit were pivotal in getting the Thor off planet safely. Jack also received a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Shortly after his promotion and a brief shore leave the USS 'Oumuamua departed for another assignment in the Gamma Quadrant. Assigned to the diplomatic team, Commodore V'Airu left Major Wes Greaves in command of the 'Oumuamua. During this window the 'Oumuamua encountered an alien vessel made entirely of organic material and inhabited by living plants and trees called the Eesse. Jack found himself assigned to his first away mission since joining the ship and discovered that not all situations call for a Tactical officer but instead call for a balanced officer to help solve a problem. During this assignment he was also exposed to his first 'First Contact' scenario when his away team encountered another species called the Suclese who were hiding via a phase shifting ability and feeding on the life blood of the Eesse. This 'First Contact' had many different elements of difficulty, most of which was communications based. Although tension was high at times during the 'First Contact' negotiations with the Suclese, Jack found this a fantastic learning experience. Later in the mission he joined Lieutenant Corelli and Lieutenant jg Ulasso on another away mission, this time to explore an uncharted world that the Eesse seemed to be destined or drawn to by what they called the "Great Light". Here Jack found himself and his crew members is a second 'First Contact' situation. This time with a Eesse who served as a lone beacon on this planet, staged here thousands of years before to serve as a guide across the stars to the rest of the Eesse civilization. Jack found both of these 'First Contact' situations to be entirely different and although prepared for 'First Contact', he felt that now having actually been through it, he was better prepared for what lay ahead.

On stardate 239910.20, for his involvement in helping to translate the Suclese language in the midst of a fraught situation and discovering the planet at the end of the Eesse’s journey, respectively Jack was awarded the Explorer's Ribbon, First Contact Ribbon, Peacekeeper Service Ribbon and Innovation Ribbon by his command team.
