Had it not been for Starfleet's direct orders, I would like to try to save
the base. One of my officers thinks he found a way to diffuse the bombs.
However, as much as I want to save her, my orders stand.

I guess I had to insist on being the last one off because--in spite of the
fact that I haven't admitted it to anyone--this is my home, too. But, as
Captain, it is my duty to be the last one on base, even more so since I set
the self-destruct.

But it is more than that. I have been trained by
Starfleet....drilled...tested. And the one thing that was drilled into my
mind and my heart the most was the phrase, "the Captain is responsible for
the ship." I know some of my officers may not completely understand
this...but...someday, if they themselves become Captains, they will
understand.

The mission the Admiral gave us worries me greatly. But it isn't because
of the Maqui. It is my belief that this will become a race. Not a race to
stop the Maqui before they do something major, but a race to stop them
''period.''
The Cardassians hate the Maqui, to put it nicely, which is why one of the
first Dominion tasks was to "cleanse" the Demilitarized Zone. However, if
word gets back to the Cardassians that a Maqui group still exists, we may
find a Dominion/Cardassian task force in the area soon thereafter. And
with the components for the new starbase still in tow, Starfleet--at least
temporarily--does not have the ability to deal with an attack in this
sector.
We must stop the Maqui before the Cardassians hear about this, or things
could get ugly.
'''Captain's Log, Stardate 237507.14.'''
Things have seemed to settle down, and our pursuit of the Maqui-controlled
vessel has been fruitless thus far. I am beginning to wonder if they really
did manage to sneak onto SB 118, or if they just decided to quite while
they were ahead. Time will tell.
In the meantime, I've ordered the Xanth back to SB 118 for minor repairs
and a crew-change. The starbase is fully assembled, and the crew is
working on making it fully operational. The new base is enormous...more
than 15 miles high, and the on-board population is expected to be
enormous, also.
On a note closer to home, I am a little concerned about my crew. As
Captain, it is not really my place to mingle with them, although sometimes
I think I should. But I have noticed a lack of relationships of a
more...personal nature. It is good to see that most of the officers are
able to work together, but I have to say I would like to see some
friendships develop, as well. Maybe time will grant me my request.

After Hamlet of Dane's death attempts are made on the lives of Lt. Commander Aquiss and Captain Arvanon.  One lead is in the sentient computer cube Aurora, but the crew have trouble deciphering the information held within. At Hamlet of Dane's funeral it comes out that he has a wife by the name of Lady Ophelia, a fact which makes his girlfriend extremely distraught.  Shortly afterwards the USS Xanth is hijacked and is retaken by actions from Lt. Commander Aquiss.  Unfortunately Ensign Barry White was blown to smithereens by a bomb before anyone could save him.
Hamlet's plot thickens as Lt. Tekra finds that Lady Ophelia intends to auction off all of his experimental technology to the highest bidder.  His logs also showed that he had been dodging assassins for over two years.  Ophelia contacts a group of people who are suspected of crimes by Starfleet intel - but no one can prove anything - all of them fabulously rich and to be bidders on the technology.  In the end Ophelia gathers all her buyers but Dr. Dane's robotic creations rebel rendering them all unconscious.  Starfleet security swoops in and arrests everyone.
Things get worse when poisonous lizards are released onto StarBase 118.  They kill two people and cannot be stopped by force fields.  The chaos deepens as they start heading for the command center.  Engineers find a nest of lizards and find they are resistant to phaser fire, so medical works overtime on finding an antidote to the poisonous bite.  Engineers lure them out with the lizards perfect atmosphere while medical creates an antidote.

The investigation into the death of Lieutenant, JG Hamlet of Dane and the
attempts on the lives of Lieutenant Commander Aquiss and Captain Arvanon
took an interesting twist last month when the base was overrun by a species
of lizard. These red, green, blue, and brown reptiles were about 2 feet
long and were immune to the effects of phaser fire. Things on the base
were further complicated by the fact that these lizards could evade sensors
and walk through force fields.
Things took another interesting turn when a random turbolift malfunction
kills the starbase's new Deck Officer, Han Sedona. The crew has no time to
grieve, however, as the lizards begin to multiply at a frightening rate. As
the total population on the starbase reaches 8000 lizards, Captain Arvanon,
Lieutenant Kal'tora, and Lieutenants JG Sharp, Fairaget, and Speed put
together a plan to trap the lizards with gravity well traps and knock them
out with anestisine gas.

Things are starting to pick up, only for
the worst. After an attempt on my behalf to examine Hamlet's quarters on
the Xanth, I am almost trapped in his quarters, as well. I am not sure
where to re-start this investigation, but one of the remaining lose threads
is that box that my Engineers found. I don't know if know finding "Aurora"
will help, or even if it is still around, but I will find that out soon.
However, for the time being, I have ordered that the starbase be placed on
security alert.
Our officers' meeting will prove to be interesting, also. Hopefully, our
new Deck Officer will be on board by then, and I can introduce him to the
group. End log.

I wish I could say that things have been normal, but that is not the case.
Aquiss has been forced to disable the Xanth. An annoying action, but one
that was necessary. At least we know the starbase's shields can repel
quantum torpedos, but that is a small consolation.
Hamlet's funeral wasn't even normal. I have to admit that the more I find
out about that man and the people that know him, the more confused I become.
The crew seems to be adjusting to a reality without Hamlet, but it is hard.
Even though he kept to himself, he really did involve himself with the
crew, but in ways I am only beginning to understand. Kal'tora seems to be
the hardest hit, but not anymore, for reasons which I will not detail here.
There hasn't been much from the Admiral lately, but several messages from
Elinor indicate that the changes I had envisioned for Starbase 118 and the
Xanth are becoming a reality, slowly but surely. But, I can't even worry
about that now....::

Things are finally starting to look better. The damage to the starbase is being repaired bit by bit. Now that the COMM system is reliable, I've asked for reports from all departments. I should be hearing something soon, hopefully.

The R&D team is aboard. It is my hope that we have repaired enough of our systems that we can put them to work upgrading what we just repaired. ::I pause...that sounds wierd to me...:: I've looked over their records...they should do good work.

Had it not been for Starfleet's direct orders, I would like to try to save the base. One of my officers thinks he found a way to diffuse the bombs. However, as much as I want to save her, my orders stand.

Maquis Out of Flames Crew Roster

After watching Starbase 118 reduced to it's component atoms by a combination of self-destruct and machinations of Kalendra Solret. The crew of Starbase 118 found themselves aboard Starbase 118's defiant-class vessel the USS Xanth.

Starfleet assured us that the new Starbase would be completed in a matter of days and the command staff of the Starbase were given the mission to intercept a re-emergent Maquis celle before they triggered any incidents that may justify Dominion-Cardassian incursions into Starfleet territory.

It was soon discovered that the Marquis were on there way to UP shipyards where a number of older classes were undergoing a refit to bring them into line with the newer classes of vessels. It soon became clear that the Marquis were attempting to seize at least one of the refitted vessels.

A maquis group managed to beam an away team aboard and take sickbay hostage. The seige was ended and the group imprisoned but not before one of the maquis was beaten to death by the 2nd Science officer....On interrogation.. the Maquis leader informed us of the location of an asteroid base.

On the way to the base disaster struck - Lt Hamlet was lost - presumed dead when his quarters were converted into a 'detonation chamber' the contents of his quarters reduced to their component elements. An investigation failed to find sufficient evidence to arrest his suspected assassin.

The Xanth, with the help of the USS Orion, managed to disable a captured Romulan scout used by the Maquis, and on arrival at the shipyards entered battle with two Maquis vessels - refitted excelsiors...

The Xanth managed to disable one vessel and the maquis base but the second Maquis excelsoir is out there... somewhere....

On the return trip Lt. Cmdr. Aquiss almost met the same fate as Lt Hamlet - but was rescued by Lt Tekra.

UPDATE, by Captain Curtis Arvanon

The Starbase 118 officers--still aboard the Defiant class warship USS XANTH--capture the last ship that was hijacked from Utopia Planetia by the Maquis. The crew's return to the starbase is not a peaceful one. Engineers Sharp and Fairaget discover a strange device--soon nicknamed Aurora--which claims to be sentient, then disappears. Soon after the XANTH docks with SB 118, an attempt is made on Captain Arvanon's life, and an unknown force attempts to gain access to Starbase 118's computers.

A routine staff meeting is turned upside-down by the new Deck Officer, Ensign Barry White. The investigation into Lieutenant JG Hamlet's death is given new life, even as the crew of the Starbase prepares for his funeral.

The crew's investigations into Hamlet's death and into the disappearance of Aurora continue, and the crew continues to adjust to life on their new 18-mile high home. Many activities are taking place all over the station now, some involving some involving some less-than-virtuous characters, but whether or not they have any connection to the starbase's current problems has yet to be seen.
