Intelligence Officers ensure that the senior staff of a ship or installation have the latest data regarding imminent threats, new alien contacts, nearby civilizations, and dangerous phenomena. This information is supplied through the resources of Starfleet Intelligence, and an operative's research skills.

General Parameters & Requirements

  • Main Responsibility: Compiling and presenting information on threats to command staff.
  • Other Responsibilities: Providing secondary support in most key areas of operation such as helm, communications, operations, and engineering.
  • Intelligence operatives are to gather intelligence information regarding the current mission, especially in regard to potential threats to crew and vessel. Most operatives are primarily focused on the use of research skills, as well as the ability to form relationships and negotiate with allies for new information.
  • Intelligence operatives, by the nature of the information they compile and make available to their commanding officers, must have classified clearance. Starfleet Intelligence data is often clearance-restricted and usually must be kept secured.
  • Similar to the way in which a Starfleet medical officer is an officer of Starfleet Medical, but reports to their commanding officer first and foremost, mainline Starfleet Intelligence officers are first and foremost accountable to their ship or station's commanding officer.
  • All but the smallest ships appropriate office space for Intelligence officers, with encrypted access to the Starfleet Intelligence database.

Guidelines

These requirements are written entirely OOC, and explain your responsibilities as a player. These guidelines apply equally to NPCs (or PNPCs).

While the role-models for intelligence are myriad in cinema – James Bond, and Jason Bourne, for example – all players with characters in the intelligence field should keep in mind that mainline intelligence officers do not have a role in clandestine operations. The vast majority of intelligence work both contemporarily, and in the Star Trek universe, is focused on research, negotiation, contact building with allies, and in some cases utilizing covert listening tools and skills to intercept data.

  • Permission first, always: Talk to your commanding officer about the boundaries for your character.
  • Section 31: As far as your character is concerned, it doesn't even exist unless your commanding officer has given specific, time-limited permission to introduce it. Even on Deep Space 9, the staff who we saw onscreen interacting with Section 31 did not discuss it regularly or certainly speak with others about it. This is an exclusive, rogue organization with no public persona, and as such, it's not something almost anyone would know about – even intelligence officers.
  • Chain of command: Per above, your character reports first to the ship or station's commanding officer. For mainline intelligence operatives, Starfleet Intelligence is simply the branch of Starfleet which coordinates intelligence data and helps operatives connect the dots. It does not command or control intelligence officers placed on ships or stations in most cases.
