When Arik was young, his father Chamberlain, was a well-known surgeon in the Alpha Quadrant. In the final year of his primary education, Chamberlain asked Arik to follow in his footsteps and attend the College of Medical Sciences at the Tri-Planetary Academy on Aldebaran. Arik applied and was accepted.

At the end of his freshman year, Arik, who was already on academic suspension, was expelled from the school. His roommate testified to the school's Chancellor that Arik had taken a bottle of Romulan Ale from the Applied Pharmaceutics Lab and had been on a three-day bender when the accident happened.
