Personality

Officer Personality Assesment: Ensign Stefan Matthieu [2397]

Professionally, Stefan Matthieu is a dedicated officer displaying great passion in his field of specialization. He is observed to derive great pleasure in exploring the finer points of his work and often seeks out new information and tasks that immerse him in his area of expertise. In nearly every area, personal and professional, he displays a very detail-oriented attitude. This mode of operating often leads him to produce highly accurate and polished results, however it also tends to lead into some level of detachment from the practical side of things. In working with others, Matthieu is reported to be very professional and formal while also demonstrating affable and good-humoured demeanour when not absorbed in any professional task. His manner of relating to colleagues and superiors is generally described as ‘reserved and reticent but nearly always good natured and gracious’. In personal relationships he tends to form few, close bonds that rely heavily on a sense of trust and camaraderie. With close relationships he readily shares his passion for areas of interest and expresses opinions and beliefs with ardour seldom shown in public.

Personal History

Stefan Matthieu was born on 4 September 2365 (236510.4) in Avingon, European Alliance, Earth, to Bernard Matthieu a Starfleet officer and member of the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps, and Marie D'Auvergne-Girard, the only daughter of the family D'Auvergne-Girard in Avingon.

Rather than grow up on a Starship, Matthieu's father decided to have Matthieu stay on earth to live with his mother. Matthieu spent his early years living on the property of his mother's family, a vinyard in country outside Avingon.

The wealth of the family Auvergne-Girard had been lost during the Earth’s final Great Wars, Earth-years 1992 to 1996. Following the wars, societal reforms eliminated extreme inherited wealth and socio-economic stratification on Earth, paving the way for the United Earth Government of 2150 which led earth to help form and join the Federation. Despite the changes, noble titles and family properties remained as artefacts of heritage and culture, including the country estate and vineyards of Auvergne-Girard.

Ages 8 through 14, Matthieu attended the primary school in the city of Avignon, and at home, learned to help his maternal uncle run the property and vineyard. In his spare time Matthieu explored the countryside and family land, finding places to read on free afternoons.

In 2373, Matthieu’s father, Commander Bernard Matthieu, serving as first officer on the Miranda Class Starship U.S.S Sitak, was sent to the Federation-Cardassian Border near Bajor as part of the conflict preceding the Dominion War. The U.S.S Sitak along with other Federation starships was destroyed in the Federation’s counterattack against the dominion alliance at the Starfleet station ‘Deep Space Nine’. The Sitak’s destruction in combat with Jem’Hadar warships left no survivors. Matthieu was eight years old at the time of his father’s death.

At age fourteen, Matthieu was sent away to study at a boarding school, a technical academy in the city of Grenoble. Throughout early adolescence, the death of his father shaped his views of service and duty, fostering in him a fear of leaving the earth and anything related to service in the ranks of Starfleet. News on Earth of newly commissioned ships and highly awarded captains brought to mind uncomfortable memories of the uniform and insignia his father served in and gave his life to. The nature of his father’s death and the conflicts between the Federation and other, seemingly imperialistic and hostile powers, became something Matthieu avoided learning about. This led him to instead focus on finding beauty and purpose in his studies of the physical sciences at the academy.

In his last year at the academy, Matthieu had become close friends with a classmate his age: a Vulcan male name Serrok sent to study on earth. At the year’s end, Matthieu had applied to University, as to continue his studies towards an academic career or research position on Earth, while Serrok and many of Stefan’s peers applied and attended Starfleet Academy. Matthieu still maintained his avoidance of Starfleet and thus showed no interest in the Academy. During his university studies, Matthieu kept in close correspondence with Serrok, and through him began to learn about Starfleet from within. He began to see through the walls he had put up around the memory of his father and the institution he served. The messages they exchanged conveyed the ideals of Starfleet, life at the academy and most importantly the image of what a Starfleet Officer aspires to be. Matthieu, through these letters and his own research of his father’s records had built an image of the officer his father once was and one he hoped to be. As Matthieu came close to completing his physics degree and Serrok his officer training, Matthieu had come to not only understand the legacy his father held, but now felt the desire to hold up the values he had served and wished to follow in his parent’s and friend’s footsteps. In the summer of 2392, with his degree in high energy physics behind him, Matthieu applied to the academy.
