Background

236307.19: Zhaan was born on her parents' estate located on a small island in the Atraxan Island chain.

Both of her parents are artists specializing in telepathic visualization using Diamond Glass Basotile as their primary medium. Both are considered gifted and developed a reputation both on and off world that led to offers from galleries and private collectors. At first, Delai turned them down but later decided to accept some of these off-world offers as a means of searching for priceless works of art stolen during the wars which ravaged Basul Rodul. Toward that end, he purchased a vessel large enough to be used as a family home.

Unlike most Rodulans who seldom leave their home world, her parents' pursuit and recovery of priceless works of art meant that Zhaan spent the majority of her childhood in space and on alien worlds and in interactions with non-Rodulan crew members. Their experiences in those years led to some of her father's most important works of art, one in particular, created shortly after the death of her mother, Meilyss, is considered a modern masterpiece and is often exhibited in off world galleries.

The day her Mother was killed, during one of their 'missions' as her father called them, proved to be a turning point in Zhaan's life. In mourning for her Mother, Zhaan also questioned everything that she had once taken for granted.

Her father and brothers went armed from that point forward; her father blamed himself for Meilyss' death and turned inward for a time while her brothers threw themselves into the work. Those were dark times for the family but her father and brothers were adamant about continuing the work they had started.

As she grew older, Zhaan was fiercely protected by her father and brothers, something that continues to this day, and chaffed under their well-meant but, as she thought, unnecessary restrictions. Her natural curiosity and giving nature led her to make friends wherever they went and it was through her friendship with a Betazoid counselor who also became a friend of the family and traveled with them for a short time, that Zhaan came to understand that she wanted to help others heal -- and she wanted to continuation exploring the vastness of space.

Her decision to leave the Seeker and enter Starfleet was met with resistance but she was adamant.
