Backstory/Timeline

Jalen Mhoram Vesole’s early life was filled with unbridled joy. He and his older brother were cherished by loving parents, who were also Archeologists for the University of Betazed. While his parents spent a fair amount of time away from the family home in Medara, the fact that their extended family, including both sets of Grandparents and his maternal Great Grandmother filled what gaps in care might have existed otherwise.

When Jalen was almost six years of age (2365), his ability to read minds and emotions manifested in near-full adult development, but with only a child’s control. His Great Grandmother Jelinzeda recognized the boy as their family’s “Mionye”, a gifted telepath, who, according to the superstitious old but loving woman, if given the proper training, could become a spiritual leader. It was she who taught young Jalen the means of controlling the more compelling of his abilities to this day.

Jalen’s telepathic development was the cause of the only major familial strife that he can recall. On one side, his maternal great grandmother and maternal grandmother both thought the boy should be sent to a Temple in Melfi, to embrace the role of “Mionye”. His Paternal Grandmother and both sets of grandfathers believed the boy simply needed to sent to a special school in Medara. His parents sided with the plan to try the Medaran Institute for Youth while they finished a dig near the City of Rixx. But the two grandmothers on his mother’s side never forgave the family for turning the boy away from loftier endeavors, and treating him like he “had a disease rather than a blessing”.

Jalen’s tenure at the institute was short lived. The fighting his family had done at the expense of his dear Great Grandmother left him angry and acting out. Moreover, he could not control all the voices and feelings in his head. In 2367, His Father Tranel and Mother: Crylzin (nee) Lina Vesole accepted the University of Betazed’s offer to head up the Archeological research on several sites on Tagus III, both because of the honor of doing so, but mostly to remove their young son from such a heavily populated area.

On Targus III, Jalen became a normal kid to the relief of his parents. He was able to quiet his mind and utilize the meditative techniques his grandmothers taught him to keep his abilities at his command, rather than at its mercy. Yes, he was a stronger than average telepath and showed flashes of forcing his will on others if angered (he once forced a bully to pants himself and dance a jig to the delight of his classmates), but make no mistake, Jalen is no superman, nor is he interested in being one. The trauma of his family’s dealing with the ordeal of his childhood problems had led him to view his own abilities with something akin to embarrassment and rue. He needed discipline and self-confidence.

A decade into the Targus III surveys, Jalen, or “JM” to his friends, through a dinner party held by his parents, he met a young woman whose Mother was in Star Fleet. She filled his ears with stories of adventure and derring-do, but he FELT behind it all was a real sense of discipline and structure that he knew he both craved and needed. On his 18th birthday, Jalen applied to Star Fleet Academy with the blessings of both his parents, his brother and his last remaining grandparent, Dolkon his Father’s own Dad.

Though he applied and made it into the academy (school) at the average Betzoid age of 18, it took Jalen ten years to finish! For the first few years, Jalen thought that he needed to find a Major that would help him hone or take advantage of his abilities as a reader. He started with a major in *Intelligence, focusing on Cardassia*. Along with his Star Fleet Core Curriculum Coursework, Jalen completed the following courses in the Intelligence Major: *Diplomacy: Hostile Species. Engineering Intermediate Electronics I, Engineering Operations and Command Functions, Intelligence: SIGNIT Collection/Jamming and Intelligence Crypto-analysis, Survival: Captivity, and Psychology: Cardassian.*

It was during this first period in Star Fleet where his easy-going, and wise-guy personality emerged. Jalen was at peace and thoroughly loving life as a single and sensitive Betazoid male. Moreover, his grades were better than average, and he seemed to have a bright future in the intelligence area. It just wasn’t feeling right.

Yes, he was feeling more confident, and certainly more disciplined, but he felt that perhaps he wasn’t dreaming BIG enough. He took a semester leave to go home to Betazed, and spent nearly half a year in his great grandmother’s art studio, painting. In addition to becoming quite an accomplished painter in the technical sense, he had noticed a theme that emerged in his artwork; his strokes were bold, the colors and contrasts daring. Many of his painting were images from Betazed’s feudal days, depicting enlightened leaders and philosophers. There, in the home where he had felt love, joy and the struggle of his family over his telepathic abilities...he found his answer in his Great grandmother Jelinzeda's art stdio. Jalen wanted a ship, or at least a command.

Jalen returned to the Academy and enrolled in *Communications/Operations Major* program, completing the 18 credit requirements with regular honors. He chose, as many would-be commanders do, to minor in *Helm/Navigation*, completing the 6 credit minor also with regular honors.

In the end, Jalen Mhoram Vesole finished his days in the academy graduating in the top 1/3 of his class with a *Major in Communications/Operations *and a *Minor in Helm/Navigation*. He also has an *“unofficial”* *Minor in Intelligence*, with a standing invitation to finish a Major in Cardassian Intelligence. His grades were good, but his instructors and professors appreciated more than his adherence to decent, but not perfect study habits. It was his desire to learn, to be BETTER. To strike that balance between command and control, they liked best about Vesole.

His time on Starbase 118 has been the most fun he has had so far, perhaps because he is sensing he has struck a balance in the use of his telepathic talents and his own moral code. Perhaps because he knows he will soon be an “Ensign” and on his way to a career he is certain to love. He has learned from his loving family, his own talents, and his experiences to trust what the universe sends you. It may not be what you expect, but it *will *be a gift. And damn, if he won’t enjoy it!
