Early Life
Hayden was born on stardate 237504.03 to then Captain Rolaando Cayne and Dr. Perisma Cayne. His mother was the head of the Psychology Department at the University of Betazed. Captain Cayne was the commanding officer of the USS Roanoke, a Galaxy-X Class starship. Through much of his childhood Hayden didn't spend much time with his father. His duties kept him out among the stars and Perisma felt his life needed grounded. He would see his father a few times a year, and had calls with him often. As he got older the calls became less frequent.
As a young boy he idolized his father and wanted to be just like him. As he approached his teenage years something changed in the way he looked at his father. Removing him from the pedestal he had him on, Hayden no longer wanted to be anything like his father. While there was a slight respect for what Starfleet stood for, Hayden no longer wanted to grow up and become an officer.
Teenage Years
Hayden spent his teenage years in and out of trouble. Whenever he got caught, his parents were there to bail him out of trouble. This persisted into his twenties. Starting out with petty theft and fraud, he soon elevated his game. The theft was no longer petty. He was good at using his telepathy to his advantage, enabling him to steal many things and either selling them or bartering for other useful items.
Early Twenties
When Hayden was twenty he left Betazed aboard a freighter as a cargo specialist, it took him three weeks to steal the freighter. Teaming up with a couple of his friends he got into trouble with, they started stealing cargo and reselling it. Eventually, the opportunity to run cargo that was illegal presented itself. This was a point in his life that holds the most regrets.
When he was twenty-one, he was caught running illegal cargo using a stolen ship. For his father, it was the last straw. Hayden was given an ultimatum to join Starfleet and do something with his life, or his father would no longer be there to bail him out of trouble. At the time, Hayden was dating Vesra Demond. She had just been accepted to Starfleet Academy. Between her leaving and his fathers angst, he decided to apply to Starfleet. Though he was initially denied entry his father pulled strings and two days later he was accepted.
Academy Years
His freshman year he took nothing seriously, mocking most professors and causing light trouble when he could. In his second year Vesra broke up with him due to his antics. She wanted to be with a serious person and felt that Hayden was never going to grow up. At first nothing changed, he was still too mischievous. After Vesra started dating another student something clicked and he got his act together going from barely passing, to excelling in every obstacle placed in front of him. Hayden decided to double major in Security and Tactical, with a minor in Helm/Nav. On top of that, his electives focused on Intel classes.
After a stellar two years, Hayden considered staying longer to take enough classes to finish Command specialty as well, but was eager to begin his career. Once he graduated, instead of reenrolling, he was assigned to the USS Astraeus.
