Gender: Androgynous Male (He's gender-nonconforming by humanoid standards, and species non-conforming by Aurelian standards. He sometimes questions himself as a way of assessing what he's feeling at the time, but it's not his main concern. He is who he is. He is himself. Whoever that is, and whatever that ends up being. That means more to him than defining it with a word. Unless something requires a technical answer, he'll usually just answer a question about it with a very sincere, "I'm me." Or maybe, "I'm an engineer." He uses he/him pronouns, but is open to any as long as he's given respect.)
Orientation: Unlabeled. He doesn't have very much romantic experience, and it honestly never occurred to him to do so. He will playfully flirt, and he's very quick with a compliment or some encouragement. He's good for a playful joke. And if he's allowed, he does like being affectionate. He's a big fan of hugs and cuddles and things of that nature. He'd also love to have a family of some sort someday. He's very loving and absolutely adores people openly. But for him, those things aren't tied down by a romantic mate bond. He'd likely be surprised if anyone was interested in him romantically. It probably wouldn't occur to him that he's any different than people (even his own people) who experience more romantic feelings until it was brought into question. He's down to give it the old college try. But even if it doesn't work out, he's an excellent wingman. So hey. Let him be your hype guy. He's here for you.

Appearance

Height: 6'4 (1.95m)
Weight: 146lbs (66.3kg)
Wingspan: 17 feet when his wings are fully spread out. His wings are also sizable enough to reach down the majority of his back with the addition of long feathers. The top curve of his wings is a little above his shoulders when folded against his back.
Feathers: Scarlet feathers, with some blue and yellow on the wings.
Eyes: Blue.
Build: Lithe. Svelte and elegant. Semi-athletic. He’s stronger than he looks at first glance. But almost all of it is very much lean muscle, so it makes any muscular appearance look more toned than big. The feathers tend to hide that. He is tall in comparison to most humanoids, but he's actually fairly short for an Aurelian. (His parents and many of his siblings reach close to 7 feet tall or more. They like to rib him for that occasionally.)
Uniform (on duty): Most Aurelians don't wear clothes and are more likely to wear harnesses to carry items, perhaps bind wings if desired or needed. Or in some cases might have small accessories that are technologically helpful, or spiritually relevant to them. Dekas, however, is a special case. He was introduced to clothes and found that he loved them, and thus chose to wear an altered form of the uniform with necessary Aurelian accommodations. The back is more open, allowing for his wings. The fabric is lighter and more breathable. But the most noticeable difference is that his uniform does not have sleeves. For the most part, he does not bind his wings unless he feels they are going to be a problem for a given circumstance. They are a huge part of how he communicates nonverbally with others and that would hinder him more than the occasional wing spasm does.
Taste in clothing (off duty): He still likes clothes off duty, he likes how much they add to personal expression. His style is loose. Flowy and breathable. Beautiful. Colorful. Tastefully so. Not too distractingly bright without reason, in fact, he's quite fond of pastels unless he's looking for a reaction. His clothes are always light and easy to move in. Shirts rarely have sleeves, and if sleeves exist they're never long sleeves. He also does tend toward shirts that are cropped higher, he finds them more comfortable and freeing while still being expressive considering he grew up not wearing clothes at all. Many of the styles he finds beautiful are considered more feminine, and his off-duty attire reflects that. Catch him in a beautiful flowy skirt, he thinks he's pretty. He also frequently caps his talons/nails so they aren't causing problems being sharp.
Voice: Cheery. Bit sing-songy. Perhaps... feathery when he's using his voice softer. He speaks quite formally in federation standard, but it is still cheery, and somewhat musical or whimsical. He sounds as friendly as he is. His vocal range is a little higher, semi-feminine by certain standards. He’s also flamboyant, especially when he's excited, which accentuates the musical intonations of his voice a lot more. Sounds similar to a very slight Swedish lilt.
Notable details: His height because he's tall by most humanoid standards. Huge wings. Bright, scarlet plumage with touches of blue, green, yellow, and orange, and expressive head feathers to prove it. Black-tipped beak, as well as a more colorful tattoo of an intricate feather on the left side of his beak that has touches of yellow and orange. He himself is just a very noticeable, unique being.

Manner

Hobbies and Pastimes: Socializing, singing and/or whistling (mostly to himself but he has no shame and will also sing and whistle for others if requested. He sounds lovely.) Learning new things, and having new experiences. He often enjoys finding things to do with Engineering specifically, but more casually than only working; small things. He is also learning Federation Standard Sign Language, he finds it beneficial to break a language barrier as well as appreciate the beauty of a language that doesn't rely on sound. If he needs time to himself, he reads or researches things that interest him or things he's curious about. He's also taken up casual journal keeping. At one point played a little bit of harp. He was not the best at it. But he'd like to pick it up again at some point and do better.
Likes: Helping people, learning new things, whistling, reading, various theatrical music like show-tunes or just things that you can sing and/or dance to, also punk music due to a close friend he met during his time at the academy being the lead singer in their own indie punk band, singing, dancing, art, has a particular fondness for things that glow, flowers, meeting new friends, engineering.
Dislikes: Unkindness. Dishonesty, he'd much rather hear a nasty truth than a lie. Other things to be discovered with time.
Ambitions and Goals: For now, his goal is simply to do his best with who he is and be a good person. May become more specific as things move forward.
Temperament: Very friendly. Excitable. Playful. Does his best to express himself in a way that the humanoid majority understands as approachable. Sometimes hard with a beak, but he really is trying. He's a pretty upbeat dude.
Values: Above all, he values kindness, openness, family, and friendship. As a person, he seeks to emulate those values the best he can. He gives people the benefit of the doubt upfront in the majority of circumstances. Even when people are rude or insensitive toward him he allows them the consideration that perhaps they don't know Aurelian etiquette, or they're having a really bad day. And he'll ask if they're okay before even considering how it made him feel. Intention means something to him, and if it's not someone's intent to be hurtful, then he'll make sure he double-checks before taking real offense. He'll be honest about it, but he can move past it if it seems like someone is just learning or going through a rough time. He lives his life showing high amounts of compassion and empathy. He is incredibly welcoming and encouraging.
Religious views: He believes in the Pho'nix, and shows great respect for the idea of the Great Fire Bird who spreads their warmth and creation across the cosmos. But he also is open to the concept that the bird is more of a legend than a literal real being. He acknowledges his limited understanding of things. The Bird could be real, and a god of their world. The Bird could be a legend. For all Dekas knows, the bird could have been one of the first Aurelians to have a sense of sentience, a progenitor of his species. He won't claim to be vain enough to know for sure. But he greatly respects The Pho'nix in whatever form or truth the idea holds. If he meditates, often he either grounds himself with the help of the Pho'nix in mind, or at the very least makes sure to extend gratitude for Them. And if he does pray for whatever reason, then The Great Fire Bird is the one he prays to. He keeps a set of specially carved Au'rin crystals in his quarters for that spiritual connection. He also has a necklace made of the same crystal that he might occasionally wear if he's feeling some kind of way about it. But he keeps that safe and for special occasions.

Vocal habits: Prone to whistling or making clicking sounds for this reason or that. He sometimes forgets Federation Standard words and might ramble to find the word or phrase he's searching for, and often he will make those clicking or whistling noises when he's remembered such things. He's also very fond of the word "Marvelous!" so don't be surprised when he excitedly says it over something he thinks is marvelous. His laughter is generally self-contained and fairly quiet. Unless you can get him to bust up into hysterics over something, in which case it's a whole lot louder than you'd expect considering his normal laugh is so quiet and breathy.
Aurelian cultural habits: The main one he engages in is bowing respectfully to everyone in greeting. Since the academy, he has kept it pretty tame, usually keeping to a small head bow. A general greeting isn't a really intense bow by any means, but he still learned pretty quickly that people found it strange to be bowed to most of the time. However, in situations where he feels it appropriate, he will absolutely do a full bow of personal respect. Many flocks have similar shows of respect, but his flock, in particular, is very big on the bowing. Thus, so is Dekas. Other things to be noted later.

Siblings: He has 12 older siblings. 9 sisters, 3 brothers. He's the youngest. He's also the only one of his siblings to be born as a singular hatchling instead of being a twin or a triplet (which are very common on Aurelia.)
- Siblings in birth order: Rha and Ruri (sisters), Irik and Keso (brothers), Sukki, Mars, and Ehk (sisters), Gura and Eris (brother and sister), Aki, Koori, and Ura (sisters)

Background

Dekas was raised in the tropics of Aurelia. He has beautiful scarlet plumage like the rest of his flock. He is the youngest of 13 children born to Zuka and Daf. In turn, he struggles with fully knowing himself at times as he has so many other Aurelians that he takes after. It's a lot to live up to.

In some ways Dekas is extremely naive. He's a product of his planet's culture and the culture's distinct lack of internal and external conflict with his people and other peoples. He's cautious, but he will give anyone the benefit of the doubt up front regardless of initial anxieties. He knows not every person or group has good intentions. His family line and flock history hold a great deal of the loss from the Orion's attempt to take over their planet. A noticeable majority of the still missing Aurelians can be traced back to his flock and similarly unique flocks. (There is, after all, a reason that most Aurelians seen are of yellow feathers these days.) He sometimes thinks and reflects about if they're still out there, or maybe if their descendants are, and if they'll ever be found. But much like the rest of his people, he tries to move past it and not look at other races as people who'd do the same as the Orions.

He’s extremely friendly, and always willing to help where he’s needed. Tends to want to care for others before himself. To a fault, if he’s not careful. Family is important to him, so he tries to find family in those around him. He likes people despite any awkwardness.

He was torn on whether he wanted to join Starfleet initially. He'd always felt drawn to it, but he loved his family, and leaving them sounded very difficult. He did eventually choose Starfleet and was easily accepted. Due to a disagreement with Koori, the sister he feels the strongest connection to, he was almost talked out of it. But he followed his intuition and his heart and chose to go. Most of his family was very supportive. Curious. Excited for him. Koori was supportive enough to not fight him on it again, though she didn't say goodbye when he left. As of current, their relationship is a little distanced and it has a lot less to do with the physical distance and more to do with the fight they had before he left. They haven't talked much about it since then even over mail or video chats. He hopes to try and fix that. Somehow.

While in the academy he learned he had quite an affinity for Engineering. Something he hadn’t expected of himself as it isn't typical of Aurelians to be interested in starship mechanics. But he very much enjoys learning new things about it whenever he can.

He graduated from classes with pretty good marks. Specialized in Material Engineering and Programming and minored in Propulsion Systems and Helm navigation. Takes a secondary interest in various pieces of knowledge about psychology. But that’s more of a side hobby than anything else.

For Dekas, that's enough to consider him a friend. He hopes the Major feels similarly, but is just happy to know him.
Rel Cassi	USS Juneau	Friends	While Cassi is back and forth on the ship at times, Dekas thinks she's lovely. And as far as he's been able to tell, she seems to feel similarly fond despite not having a huge amount of contact with each other yet. Regardless he's always happy when she's around again.
