As long as I have the privilege of being, I'm gonna enjoy every moment of it.

Amelia Semara is currently serving as a Science Officer aboard the USS Khitomer.

Appearance

  • Full Name: Amelia Magnolia Semara
  • Title: Daughter of the Valley of the Sapphire-Crowned Sun
  • Height: 5' 7" (1.7 m)
  • Weight: 130 lbs (59 kg)
  • Hair: Blonde
  • Eyes: Dark Green, near black
  • Build: Slim and Athletic
  • Telepathic Abilities: T4/E4
  • Manner of Dress: On duty, she keeps immaculate care of her uniform and hair. On and off duty, she often wears an heirloom golden pin - The Golden Leaf of Semizad - in her hair.[1] Off duty, she's the picture of a lady - often dressing to a higher standard than those around her, wearing elegant and modern renditions of classic designs.

Background

Amelia is the youngest of a long matriarchal gentry line descended from a noble house of Betazed - though no one in at least three generations seems to know which one, exactly. Born and raised in a high mountain valley on Casperia Prime, she grew up on an ancestral ranch her matrilineal grandparents had converted into a ski resort in an attempt to revitalize both the nearby town and the family name.

If they had their way, Amelia would have been born to a marriage they’d arranged for Alessa, her mother, and been shaped into the perfect modern-day Betazoid belle ready to take on the family’s mantle. That plan fell apart when Alessa fell in love with Tyvan, Amelia's father: a humble, if ruggedly handsome, outdoorsman and self-described hippie. Alessa married him despite the family objections, and was disinherited from the ranch in turn.

None of that stopped the family from insisting Amelia be brought up in the traditional way, same as generations of Semara matriarchs-to-be before her. If anything, the need to make peace in the family made sure she wasn’t going to escape childhood without learning everything she needed to know about navigating Betazoid nobility and galactic high society, and then some. Even as a child she found herself obligated to welcome and spend time with all manner of notables and dignitaries that visited the resort.

As much as Amelia enjoyed that life, when the mountains called, she answered. Between all the schooling and family obligations, Tyvan made sure Amelia was just as familiar with the local, small-town Casperian culture and, most importantly, opened her eyes and mind to the natural world around her. Scarcely a weekend passed where she wasn’t skiing, hiking, climbing, camping, or exploring nature. Tyvan also made sure she also learned to turn inward, teaching her a Betazoid kind of yoga and meditation.

As she matured, she increasingly blended what she’d learned from both sides of the family. She started working in her grandparents’ resort when school and social obligations allowed. After an unimpressive stint at University, she returned to her hometown as a ski instructor in winters, then as a backcountry and mountain tour guide in summers. Tourism in the valley boomed in her early twenties, and the growing town formed a volunteer search and rescue team. Amelia was among the first to sign up, putting her intimate knowledge of the valley to good use.

Her home changed quickly after her grandparents both passed. The estate passed to her uncle, Denral, who had little interest in running the business and less in the health of the town and its surrounding wilderness. He hired a Ferengi management company, which immediately began redeveloping the area. After a few years of non-stop change made her hometown nearly unrecognizable, her mother and father finally decided to move on from the valley, leaving Amelia alone to wonder what was next for her.

In the end, Amelia not only left the valley but the planet. She joined Starfleet, finding it was a good match for her assorted skills, and a new kind of mountain to challenge herself on.

Personality

Amelia is best described as an easygoing, refined ray of ruthless sunshine. Socially, she’s an optimistic, old-fashioned and utterly charming country Betazoid belle. Inwardly, she can’t resist the unquenchable drive to climb the highest mountain in sight - literally or metaphorically.

Her upbringing amidst the socialites and sophisticates instilled in her deeply ingrained sense of good country manners and Betazoid upper class polish, and left her with a love of gossip, harmless frivolity, and playful banter. Her rebellious phase saw her spending as much time cavorting and listening to stories in a local dive as she spent dancing and dining at charity galas, but she still struggles with rude and boorish attitudes compared to her gracious (and liberal) Betazoid-Casperian childhood norms. Still, Amelia is a master of the interpersonal, and, above all, a prodigious relationship-builder and loyal, joyful friend to those closest to her.

Amelia’s gregarious personality is balanced out with an unquenchable love of nature and the outdoors that lends her a centered, almost spiritual inner quiet uncommon in Betazoids. Long hours either in solitude or with only a close friend taking in the world around her has shaped her into a passionate naturalist and conservationist, and something of a natural scientist.

Her greatest strength might be an apparent immunity to all manner of dangerous situations. She has a knack for meeting situations head-on with reassuring poise and positivity (or annoying glee, depending who you ask) plus an inexhaustible supply of quaint sayings and analogies, and an unconventional approach to solving problems she makes work for her.

Amelia’s various reasons for joining Starfleet are all likely true: a desire to document and preserve wild places in the universe, and a dedication to finding common ground with almost anyone. However, it’s also likely she left her home equally because of unresolved grief when she could no longer recognize her home, or her place in it.

Hobbies and Likes:

  • Rock climbing, hiking, yoga, and generally anything outdoors
  • Parties, dancing, and good gossip
  • Playing her Casperian fiddle
  • Good food. She’ll at least try just about anything, but she has a weakness for her family’s barbeque tradition.[2]

Dislikes

  • Dry lectures and cold theory
  • Bad manners
  • Using good manners to hide bad intentions
  • Ferengi Capitalism
  • Wanton exploitation of natural resources

Relationships

Family

Parents

Amelia grew up in a loving home, and maintains a close and heartfelt relationship with her parents despite the distance and demands of a career in Starfleet. She frequently recalls them affectionately and their family home, even if her parents have moved out of her home valley.

Talia Ohnari
Confidant

Amelia felt a kinship with the Khitomer CMO almost as soon as she met the woman, and opted to entrust the doctor with some of the deeply private details of her ability to telepathically commune with animals.[3] She's offered to help with Talia's Pyrithian Azure-crested fruit bat, Statler. Perhaps, in time, the shared love of animals and compatible demeanors will be the start of a friendship.

Potential Friend

After a long conversation about food, family, and the Commander's upcoming wedding, there seems to be a strong promise of friendship between the two despite the differences in seniority. Amelia happily dragged the man along on a visit to Yosemite park, and got involved helping his parents put together the feast for his wedding. Who knows what the future holds?

Nolen Hobart Arrow.png

Nolen Hobart
Officer Idol

After failing a command test set out by the Commander, Amelia has decided to make Hobart her mentor. Perhaps not the healthiest admiration, Amelia has yet to fully realize the fullness of the gulf of differences between herself and the half-Betazoid first officer, but she's determined to learn everything she can from him (for as long as he'll tolerate her enthusiasm).

Randal Shayne
Giant Question Mark

Amelia's relationship with her Captain has gotten off to an unusual start, to say the least. After a mission that ended with her telepathically coaxing a non-corporeal toddler to behave, Shayne, fearful of Amelia's telepathic abilities, used a drug that inhibited her ability to read him.[4] Fearing her sudden and strange empathic blindness was a side effect from the mission, Amelia rushed to sickbay, where she discovered the truth about the Captain's self-medication from Doctor Ohnari.[5]. Amelia left well enough alone, until she discovered the Captain suffering from a bout of withdrawals at the Dewitt's wedding. Not wanting to leave him alone, she asked him to dance with her, and during the dance the two finally managed a conversation.[6] Already, the consequences of the relationship are being felt - unbeknownst to Amelia, Shayne has been temporarily relieved of duty due to the intensity of his withdrawals from the drug, leaving where the two go from here deeply uncertain.

Important Sims

  • Nesting - Amelia recalls what it felt like telepathically communing with a bird.
  • Lightshow Lullaby - Amelia's memory of an early empathic experience helps her communicate creatively.
