Background

(OOC: This bio includes embellishments/ expansions to the current Bactrican species write-up on the Starbase118 wiki.)

Following the Poet Incident of 2354, Bactrican society underwent targeted reforms aimed at making their world an acceptable candidate for Federation protectorate status. Among other changes, the Theocracy which had ruled the planet for a millennium was displaced in favor of the current system of rule by three sets of tri-bonded Bactricans and various degrees of civil rights would be granted to the formerly-oppressed thirds. These reforms would ultimately see Bactrica fast-tracked for full membership as a stop-gap against the Tzenkathi.

These reforms proved all-but-toothless, however, among certain regions and sub-cultures which managed to hold tightly onto the past in spite of the realpolitiks of the present. Imril was born to such a pair of Bactricans, who promptly handed their child over to a sarkui-enga (“nunnery”) for a ‘traditional upbringing’ and all of the unpleasantness which that entailed. A life of learning to make oneself the ideal candidate for eventual bonding to a couple (of the ‘proper mindset’) to whom they’d be effectively enslaved. Enslaved, if not by law, then by relentless and all-surrounding indoctrination. Dance, conversation, poise, and above all self-denial were the focus of the lessons.

The Reforms did require the sarkui-enga to grant their students more access to educational opportunities than the thirds of the past had been given, if filtered through a partisan lens and regarded solely as extra-curricular activities through which a third might achieve placement with a more prestigious couple. Imril took advantage of this to indulge a growing interest in engineering. Rapidly improved understanding of computers and rerouting communication lines granted them secretive access to even more scholarship, including non-filtered history of their world. The planet as it had been before the wars of a thousand years past, the lives of peace and happiness enjoyed by thirds before being declared property of the regime. Escape to the true promise of the Federation became their priority.

As part of their training, they were formally introduced to their parents at the age of fifteen…They promptly forged travel allowance papers in their name in order to get off the planet and pursue a life of their own choosing. An adventure which involved hotwiring a transporter bay and hacking the traffic signals of a hover-car lane just to get to the shuttlecraft landing bay. Afterwards, they disavowed their surname in solidarity with thirds of the past who never knew their parents at all.

Imril ended up housed in a refugee center on Bajor, where they were at last free to explore a world of knowledge. During this time, they developed a fascination for lost cultures, such as the Hebetian people of Cardassia, and an interest in exploring planets through their cuisines. Replicators were such amazing things! They found a hero in the form of Una Chin-Riley, someone who had sought refuge in Starfleet from injustices committed by one of the worlds it served. (Recruitment posters with her face on them were everywhere). They followed her example into a career in Starfleet, following a couple years of ‘catch-up’ education to get up to snuff with the application requirements. And not a small amount of counseling to deal with the culture shock.

Career History

Once enrolled in the Academy, Imril worked tirelessly to prove their worth to the organization, and to themselves. They came to see Starfleet as their family, and never looked back on the prior one.

The sole demerit on Imril’s student record was born from the massive chip on their shoulder regarding the Prime Directive’s injunction to turn a blind eye to the subjugation of others in order to avoid disrupting the ‘natural development’ of their oppressors. Which culminated in an epic rant during a Xenosociology seminar. (“When, exactly, did the victims of the Breen *choose* a boot on their throats as part of their inviolate cultural identity? If the Romulans had conquered the Coalition of Planets the 22nd Century, would the people of Vulcan and Earth and Andor and Tellar who cried out for freedom in 2398 have been satisfied to hear the next planet over tell them, ‘That sounds like a personal problem to me, but I’m sure you ignorant children will sort yourselves out eventually’? Just how long would the Dominion have had to be in control of Betazed before the Federation washed their hands of its citizens? Give me a set number of years. Or dead bodies. Whichever math works better for you.”) They had to retake the seminar the next year to earn the Science credit.

Aside from that outburst, and few smaller ones, Imril tends strongly towards showing polite deference towards their superiors. Never forgetting to call anyone with even a little authority over them Sir or by rank or tile. That much of the sarkui-enga teaching took.

Frontier Day 2041: In their fourth year of Academy classes, Imril was privileged to be one of the cadets granted a seat to watch the fleet formation from an orbital construction platform maintained by the Starfleet Corps Of Engineers. It was here that they were assimilated into the techno-organic Borg Collective under the direction of the last Borg Queen and Vox (Jack Crusher) via nanoprobes that had laid long dormant within their body. Imril could only watch in silent terror as their body rampaged across the station, killing people and assimilating Starfleet and Earth systems. What could have been a lifetime of hell instead was a 'last gasp' of the Collective; they were soon free of its control. But the damage had been done. It took time and counseling to resolve the guilt over what they'd been unable to stop themselves from doing.

Towards the end of the school year, the Academy assigned Imril to a cadet cruise on Starbase 118. With a distance from Earth, they were able to put Frontier day behind them and refocus on the positives which had led them to a career in Starfleet. Ready, willing, and able to put all of their learning to use. And driven to learn even more.

They were delivered to the station by the USS Bucephalus, a soon-to-be-retired Centaur-Class ship. While en-route, the vessel received a distress call from a Federation colony on Huith IV. By the time the Bucephalus was on scene, the colony's inhabitants had vanished. Cadet Imril was part of the initial away team that investigated the area. It soon became evident that the colonists had fled heretofore-unknown indigenous lifeforms capable of 'wrapping the darkness about themselves'. Commander Obsen, the ship's First Officer, was one of the officers killed by the beings during the resolution of the crisis. (OOC: This scenario was partially written out as the 'origin story I submitted as part of my application).

One of Imril's training scenarios while on Starbase 118 was a holographic mission carried out by themselves and their fellow cadets under the command of Commander Jo Marshall. The mission revolved around saving the personnel and research of a Caldonian science station from unknown aggressors. Imril's tasks upon beaming down with the second away team included resolving a radiation leak and discovering the location of a thoron-based scan inhibitor which was obscuring the nature of the Caldonians' research. In their exuberance to deactivate the station's security system before it could attack the team as intruders, however, they acted without seeking Marshall's permission. They launched right right into overheating the Security-specifc computer core -- via rerouting plasma exhaust that had to be moved to stop the radiation leak -- to buy time to hack into another system and establish false station IDs for everyone. This had the (possible) side-effect of giving a mechanical adversary free run of the station, too, thus endangering everyone. Following the outcome of the holo-mission, Imril resolved not to let such a mistake, jumping in without knowing all of the possible angles, happen again.

Upon graduation, Imril was assigned to the USS Artemis-A, a Luna-class explorer.
