Description

They are humanoid in appearance save for a webbed membrane between the fingers and slightly amphibious features. On the whole they tend to have a reddish weather beaten complextion and dark hair. The men tend to be 6'2" to 6'4" and the women tend to be 6' to 6'2".

Physiology

They tend to be athletic and tall with well developed musculatures. They have a high resistance to pain and while they suffer from a normal range of medical conditions they also seem to be fairly resistant to most common viral infections.

Psychology

They tend to have a higher level of aggressive behaviour than most species but are able to control this with ease. They are also highly competitive athlets and tend to do very well in all physically demending sports. Other than that they suffer from a normal range of mental issues.

Society

Considering how blunt and direct they are one would expect a higher level of civil unrest or disruptions but crime is almost unheard of and civil unrest never occurs. They have a fairly happy society with any personnel differences being dealt with in a very quick yet effective manner.

Soft soothing melodies and tranquil nature pictures/paintings form the majority of their artistic efforts.

Customs

As a culture, Zaldans are infuriated by courtesy, viewing it as a form of phoney social behaviour designed to camouflage true feelings. This has meant they have found integration into the galactic society difficult. Once this is taken into account, however, they are a friendly and helpful people.

Technology

They are slightly behind most Federation member species.

Economy

They are self sufficient and while that do have a wide range of export goods they tend to have difficulty finding and keeping trading partners. Still even with this they have a strong economy and a few long term trade partners.

Military

Before becoming a member of the Federation they had a large fleet of military ships with larger than normal complements of infantry. Since then they have sold off all these ships and now serve in the Federation. Due to their background they are one of the few species that have been allowed to provide the entire crew for a ship in Starfleet. In fact they have consistently had more than 1 ship with a complete Zaldan crew ever since the 10th anniversary of their acceptance into the Federation.

Federation Intelligence Files

In late 2366 a Borg cube invaded Federation space and due to the Borg's vastly superior power Starfleet suffered a disastrously one-sided battle with the cube, called the Battle of Wolf 359. A fleet of 40 starships assembled to combat the cube, and 39 of those ships were completely destroyed, with the cube emerging unscathed. 2 of these vessels were crewed completely by Zaldan crews. Zalkonian

Humanoid race distinguished by multiple horizontal facial ridges. They desired to be isolated in 2366 at first contact with the UFP, as some of its natives were undergoing metamorphosis into non-corporeal creatures. The first sign of a Zalkonian turning into a non-corporeal entity is when they start to exhibit painful isoelectric bursts. Zalkonians are ruled by a repressive government that seeks to destroy all those who exhibit signs of this change. Within four years, at least some natives were involved with the Maquis on Volan III.

Zaranite

Zaranites are Semi-Humanoid and have shiny light-brown skin and breathe carbon dioxide. Zaranites always wear a heavy metallic mask with twin air hoses leading to a small environmental backpack, when in class M environments. They virtually always wear heavy grey robes in public.

Mysterious non-corporeal life forms. An unknown catastrophe on Zetar destroyed all corporeal life but separated out the intelligences of the dominant Zetarian humanoids. The surviving Zetarian entities have travelled space for millennia and may be completely immortal. They need no spacecraft and can travel up to .999c without assistance. All travellers should be warned that the Zetarians are seeking humanoid bodies to inhabit. When they find a physiologically compatible body they will take possession of it. The Zetarian presence can be removed by controlled decompression therapy.
