Ensign Ryes Thar'tavos

Ryes Thar'tavos is an Andorian Ensign serving as an Operations Officer on the USS Octavia E Butler and formally the USS Oumuamua, They are without a doubt, the most boring person you could hope to meet.

About Thar'tavos

Ryes perfers his hair professionally combed and gelled back and around their antennae. They are about 6 foot 1 Ryes is a by-the-book, conventional officer. They are described as possibly the most boring, monotonous, and conventional operations officer to have ever existed. They lack creativity and originality, often defaulting to following orders with a simple "yes, sir". Ryes is committed to their duties and follows protocol.

They can sometimes view certain tasks as beneath them, showing annoyance when assigned to what they perceive as menial work. They have shown moments of initiative, such as suggesting to collect teams and leave a dangerous situation. This indicates that they are capable of independent thought when the situation demands it.

Despite these negative traits, they are described as having an unblemished record and a year of perfect service and could be argued to be one of the most reliable officers in the fleet.

While qualified as a helm officer, Ryes prefers not to be at the helm. Their piloting style is described as dull and methodical, following textbook procedures.

Relationship with colleagues

Ryes seems to have a somewhat critical view of their colleague Nilsen, perceiving him as reckless. However, they don't show outright animosity towards him. Ryes tends not to be a popular member of the crew and he is just fine with that

USS Oumuamua

During the mission to Alpha Brenkelvi II. Ensign Ryes Thar'tavos piloted the Oumumauma to saftey, follow a course set by Nilsen was a part of an away team at the time.

USS Octavia E Butler

With the transporters still offline during the search for the USS Unity Dow, Ensign Elijah Kovacs and Petty Officer 1st Una Qualunque investigate the issue further. They run preliminary diagnostics, which don’t yield any useful information. Kovacs proposes running the transport sequence during a Level 3 diagnostic. Opting for a safer approach, given the last bio-canister test exploded, the duo debated what should be placed through the transporter. Una suggests something living, like the captain or first officer’s pet, to incentivize them to make sure it works the first time. Eli, however, recommends using a banana instead, given he wouldn’t be sure they’d be forgiven if something happened to the pets.

As the transport sequence completes, for the first few moments, it seems like all is well. Then, the banana explodes, pieces strewn across the room and on the officers. Looking at the diagnostic log, it appears that once the annular confinement beam reaches maximum power there is an error within the safety margins, but it is further compounded by pattern degradation once it’s at the transporter controller. They both agree to inspect the transporter more closely.

As they make their way to the controller, the transport self-initiates the transport sequence. Una, resigned to their fate, confesses her attraction to Kovacs, who awkwardly responds by mentioning his relationship with Nilsen. Ultimately, the computer is able to complete the transport successfully. Their tense moment is interrupted by a rude ops officer, Ryes Thar’tavos, who enters the transporter room to replace chips in various panels. Despite trying to get the officer’s attention, he doesn’t seem to notice them.

Ryes completes his task, cleans up the hyperspanner left behind, and leaves the transporter room, composing a passive-aggressive message to the Operations team about maintaining cleanliness.
