Ensign Dekas is currently serving as an Engineering officer aboard the USS Juneau.

Gender: Androgynous Male (He's gender-nonconforming by humanoid standards, and species non-conforming by Aurelian standards because of style and life choices. He does still consider himself very much male even if he's not hypermasculine by Aurelian standards of what masculinity looks like, but he doesn't mind assessing other thoughts now and then. He enjoys the process of learning even if he's just learning about himself. Besides, it's entirely non-offensive to be considered feminine to him. Femininity is well thought of among his people. He'll correct it, but he's probably flattered that he's being so well regarded by his own standards. And if he's feeling silly he may answer it with, "I'm an Engineer.")
Orientation: He's never really explored that aspect of himself. He can be affectionate, and he does like to playfully flirt and give compliments. But he's never really felt strong urges to court or romance anyone. He just wants to be close friends with people. He's not opposed to the eventual exploration of it, but for now, he's fine feeling friendship primarily. Plus he's an excellent hype guy, so he'll hype you up to your love interests and offer up opportunities to get together if by some chance he has an opportunity. He might not feel inclined toward romantic bonds, but he does love love and is thrilled to see other people experiencing it.

Appearance

Height: 6'4 (1.95m)
Weight: 146lbs (66.3kg)
Wingspan: 17 feet when his wings are fully spread out. His wings are also sizable enough to reach down the majority of his back with the addition of long feathers. The top curve of his wings is a little above his shoulders when folded against his back.
Feathers: Mostly bright red feathers, with some blue and yellow on the wings.
Eyes: Bright, icy blue. Some Aurelians don't have super noticeable pupils, but the Tropical Aurelians do, and thus so does Dekas.
Build: Lithe. Svelte and elegant. Semi-athletic. He’s stronger than he looks at first glance. But almost all of it is very much lean muscle, so it makes any muscular appearance look more toned than big. The feathers tend to hide that. He is tall in comparison to most humanoids, but he's actually fairly short for an Aurelian. (His parents and many of his siblings reach close to 7 feet tall or more. They like to rib him for that occasionally.)
Uniform (on duty): Most Aurelians don't wear clothes and are more likely to wear harnesses to carry items, perhaps bind wings if desired or needed. Or in some cases might have small accessories that are technologically helpful, or spiritually relevant to them. Dekas, however, is a special case. He was introduced to clothes and found that he loved them, and thus chose to wear an altered form of the uniform with necessary Aurelian accommodations. The back is more open, allowing for his wings. But the most noticeable difference is that his uniform does not have sleeves. For the most part, he does not bind his wings unless he feels they are going to be a problem for a given circumstance. They are a huge part of how he communicates nonverbally with others and that would hinder him more than the occasional wing spasm does.
Taste in clothing (off duty): His style is loose. Flowy and breathable. Beautiful. Colorful. Tastefully so. Not too distractingly bright without reason, in fact, he's quite fond of pastels unless he's looking for a reaction. His clothes are always light and easy to move in. Shirts rarely have sleeves, and if sleeves exist they're never long sleeves. He also does tend toward shirts that are cropped a bit higher, he finds them more comfortable and freeing while still being expressive considering he grew up not wearing clothes at all. Many of the styles he finds beautiful are considered more feminine, and his off-duty attire reflects that. Catch him in a beautiful flowy skirt, he thinks he's pretty. He also frequently files his talons/nails down so they aren't causing problems being sharp.
Voice: Cheery. Bit sing-songy. He speaks quite formally, but it is still cheery, and somewhat musical or whimsical. He sounds as friendly as he is. His vocal range is a little higher, and when he's really into something there is a notable increase in his rising intonations. He’s flamboyant, especially when he's excited, which accentuates the musical sounds of his voice a lot more. Sounds similar to a very slight Norwegian accent.
Notable details: The first thing you'll likely notice about him is the extremely colorful feathered head crest. It only serves to add to his flamboyance as a person. Next, you'll notice the wings which are also colorful. Lots of blue, yellow, and red. The rest of him is covered in his bright red plumage. Then maybe you’ll notice his height, as he stands tall by most humanoid standards. He also has a black-tipped beak, and an intricate tattoo of a feather on the right side of his beak that has touches of yellow and orange. He himself is just a very noticeable, unique being.

Manner

Hobbies and Pastimes: Socializing, singing and/or whistling (mostly to himself but he has no shame and will also sing and whistle for others if requested. He sounds lovely.) Learning new things, and having new experiences. He often enjoys finding things to do with Engineering specifically, but more casually than only working; small things. He is also learning a few commonly used federation languages here and there, partially out of genuine interest in linguistics, partially to break culture and language barriers easier. If he needs time to himself, he reads, both fiction and nonfiction. And like many Aurelians, he values personal history and thus very much enjoys the act of journaling whether that's through personal logs, or physical writing. Either way, he keeps transcriptions of those things.
Likes: Helping people, learning new things, whistling, reading, various theatrical music like show-tunes or just things that you can sing and/or dance to, also punk music due to a close friend he met during his time at the academy being the lead singer in their own indie punk band, singing, dancing, art, has a particular fondness for things that glow, flowers, meeting new friends, engineering.
Dislikes: Unkindness. Dishonesty, he'd much rather hear a nasty truth than a lie. Other things to be discovered with time.
Ambitions and Goals: To do his best, and make friends along the way. May get more specific as time goes forward.
Temperament: Very friendly. Excitable. Playful. Does his best to express himself in a way that the humanoid majority understands as approachable. Sometimes hard with a beak, but he really is trying. He's a pretty upbeat dude.
Values: Above all, he values kindness, openness, family, and friendship. As such he does tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. Even if someone says something insensitive toward him. (And he has experienced a few insensitivities from people who saw him as more animal than person at first glance.) He'll ask if they're okay before he pushes forward with correcting the behavior. He finds it makes people more amiable to listen if he's compassionate and sympathetic. He also finds it works to help him know intent before taking true offense even if his feelings were pushed on.
Spiritual views: He is a strong believer in the great Pho'nix. A being who spreads warmth and creation across the cosmos. He is open to the idea that it's more of a legend, he won't claim to be so prideful as to think it's the only option for the origin of the Bird. But he has a sense of spiritual faith about it. When he meditates, he keeps the Pho'nix in mind somewhere. Helps to keep him grounded. He has a necklace carved in the shape of a flame made out of a sunstone gem from Earth. It reminded him of his connection to the Pho'nix even so far from home. Like a fire that never burns out. He only wears it on special occasions, but he keeps it in pristine condition.
Known Languages: Fluent: Tropical and Formal Aurelian dialects, one or two other Aurelian dialects, Federation standard. Conversational: Several more flock dialects, Vulcan. Can hold very simple conversations in federation sign language. Also has an extremely basic beginner's grasp of Klingon.
Vocal habits: Prone to whistling or making clicking sounds for this reason or that. He sometimes forgets Federation Standard words and might ramble to find the word or phrase he's searching for, and often he will make those clicking or whistling noises when he's remembered such things. He's also very fond of the word "Marvelous!" so don't be surprised when he excitedly says it over something he thinks is marvelous. His laughter is generally self-contained and fairly quiet. Unless you can get him to bust up into hysterics over something, in which case it's a whole lot louder than you'd expect considering his normal laugh is so quiet and breathy.
Aurelian cultural habits: The main one he engages in is bowing respectfully to everyone in greeting. Since the academy, he has kept it pretty tame, usually keeping to a small head bow. A general greeting isn't a really intense bow by any means, but he still learned pretty quickly that people found it strange to be bowed to most of the time. However, in situations where he feels it appropriate, he will absolutely do a full bow of personal respect. Many flocks have similar shows of respect, but his flock, in particular, is very big on the bowing. Thus, so is Dekas. Other things to be noted later.

Siblings: He has 12 older siblings. 9 sisters, 3 brothers. He's the youngest. He's also the only one of his siblings to be born as a singular hatchling instead of being a twin or a triplet (which are very common on Aurelia.)

Background

Dekas was raised in the tropics of Aurelia. He has beautiful red plumage like the rest of his flock. He is the youngest of 13 children born to Zuka and Daf. In turn, he struggles with fully knowing himself at times as he has so many other Aurelians that he takes after. It's a lot to live up to.

In some ways Dekas is extremely naive. He's a product of his planet's culture and the culture's distinct lack of internal and external conflict with his people and other peoples. He's cautious, but he will give anyone the benefit of the doubt up front regardless of initial anxieties. He knows not every person or group has good intentions. His family line and flock history hold a great deal of the loss from the Orion's attempt to take over their planet. A noticeable majority of the still missing Aurelians can be traced back to his flock and similarly unique flocks. (There is, after all, a reason that most Aurelians seen are of yellow feathers these days.) He sometimes thinks and reflects about if they're still out there, or maybe if their descendants are, and if they'll ever be found. But much like the rest of his people, he tries to move past it and not look at other races as people who'd do the same as the Orions.

He’s extremely friendly, and always willing to help where he’s needed. Tends to want to care for others before himself. To a fault, if he’s not careful. Family is important to him, so he tries to find family in those around him. He likes people despite any awkwardness.

He was torn on whether he wanted to join Starfleet initially. He'd always felt drawn to it, but he loved his family, and leaving them sounded very difficult. He did eventually choose Starfleet and was easily accepted. Due to a disagreement with Koori, the sister he feels the strongest connection to, he was almost talked out of it. But he followed his intuition and his heart and chose to go. Most of his family was very supportive. Curious. Excited for him. Koori was supportive enough to not fight him on it again, though she didn't say goodbye when he left. As of current, their relationship is a little distanced and it has a lot less to do with the physical distance and more to do with the fight they had before he left. They haven't talked much about it since then even over mail or video chats. He hopes to try and fix that. Somehow.

While in the academy he learned he had quite an affinity for Engineering. Something he hadn’t expected of himself as it isn't typical of Aurelians to be interested in starship mechanics. But he very much enjoys learning new things about it whenever he can.

He graduated from classes with pretty good marks. Specialized in Material Engineering and Programming and minored in Propulsion Systems and Helm navigation. Takes a secondary interest in various pieces of knowledge about psychology. But that’s more of a side hobby than anything else.

He associates Major Han with pleasant thoughts and considers him to be someone safe. Being around him puts him at ease in some ways.
Rel Cassi	USS Juneau	Friends	While Cassi is back and forth on the ship at times, Dekas thinks she's lovely. And as far as he's been able to tell, she seems to feel similarly fond despite not having a huge amount of contact with each other yet. Regardless he's always happy when she's around again.
Alexander Williams	USS Juneau	Shipmates	Met the intelligence officer during a shore leave at the spa. He, The Captain, and Williams did some sort of Klingon foot treatment involving very toothy fish and then had some blood wine at the end of it. On an odd level, Dekas finds him somewhat attractive. Kind and also mysterious, as he assumes intelligence officers are wont to do. Beyond the occasional playful comment, Dekas doesn't currently plan to act on the odd attraction bit. In fact, he wouldn't know what to do with that if it hit him in the face since he's not sure what type of attraction he's experiencing about it. But he would like to eventually call him a friend.
