Personal History

Bolarus has three continents, each with a distinct culture, and Yinn wasn't born on any of them. Her home island Izos is the northernmost island (with any sizeable population) before unbroken ocean, and Yinn's extended family made up one of the smaller towns on the island. It was the edge of nowhere.

But she had an idyllic childhood, running barefoot around the island, swimming in the sea with her innumerable cousins, learning about the wonders of nature from her dad Keff, and the methods of science from Hann, the mother she was closest to. A lot of her peers yearned for big city life on one of the main islands, but Yinn only looked in one direction. Up.

Some of her earliest memories involved sneaking out at night, swimming out away from the soft glow of the houses (Bolians used bioluminescent moss for illumination, not garish electric lights) to see the night sky in all its glory. She'd stare up at the stars and imagine herself there. Exploring strange new worlds. Seeking out new life.

She pushed herself hard to get into the Bolian Academy of Applied Sciences — they all did, Bolians find purpose in hard work and don't much care for wasted time — and dreamed of finding alien life that was truly alien, something that wasn't just another humanoid with different cranial features. Something new and undreamt of.

By a remarkable stroke of luck, she got pregnant at 17 by one of her teenage boyfriends, Trinn, and had the baby before she had to leave for the Academy. She wasn't sure if she wanted to tell her human cohorts about Tikk — humans had a weird taboo about having a baby too young, or with someone other than your spouses. Sorry, spouse, they only had one at a time!

And especially about leaving a child behind. Bolians don't have the direct one-to-one relationships humans do. A child isn't "yours" in the human sense, you're bringing someone into the family. Even with the typical four to seven parents, no one's raised by just them. Aunts, uncles, older siblings and cousins — everyone belonged to the whole family, and the family took care of everyone.

Tikk was in good hands, and while Yinn knew she was loved, she wouldn't be missed. Take a bucket of water out of the ocean, and the ocean isn't lessened for it. Pour that water into a lake, the water becomes the lake. She'd go back to Bolarus and her family one day. But for now she was where she needed to be. Part of the lake. Starfleet would be her family, and together they'd explore the stars as she always dreamed she would.
