Academy cadets are welcome to work with their curriculum advisors to create a course layout which will work best for them. However, the following Standard Course Layouts serve as a reference for most cadets.

Undergraduate Guidelines

  • Minimum number of credits needed to graduate: 48.
    • All cadets must complete the core curriculum (21 credits).
    • Cadets may take up to a maximum of 5 credits per semester and a total maximum of 60 credits during their time at the Academy.
    • A cadet must declare a major field of study by the start of their third year.
  • Minimum number of credits to major in a primary field of study: 18.
    • Some majors such as tactical, counseling, and science require additional credits. Check each major's individual requirements.
    • Cadets wishing to earn a specialization within a field may be required to take additional courses as specified by their department.
  • Minimum number of credits to minor in a second field of study: 6.
    • A cadet is not required to earn a minor at the Academy, although many cadets ultimately qualify upon graduation.
    • Cadets can select an additional 12 courses (for a total of 18 credits in a second field of study) to graduate with a second major rather than a minor.
  • Minimum number of elective credits to graduate: 3
    • Cadets are encouraged to take advantage of their time at the Academy to pursue additional courses that interest them.

Medical Cadets

  • Medical cadets earn an MD from the Starfleet Medical Academy after having previously earned a bachelor's degree and completed their pre-medical coursework. The MD program involves an additional 42 credit hours of coursework and clinical experiences spread across 4 years.
  • Cadets who wish to earn both their undergraduate degree and their MD from the Academy typically major in one of the science specialities or counseling (although any major is acceptable) during their undergraduate years. They complete the coursework like any other cadet in those fields before going on to their medical studies.
