| In an article appearing in the January 2002 edition of Star Trek: The Magazine (Volume 2, Issue 9), entitled "Who is that Alien?", the following information about the Zaranites, based on Robert Fletcher's original background notes, added:

The jewelry they wore was made from horns of the Berbbotjahaa; the top part of the necklace indicated their family, while the bottom identified each individual.

| They are a very calm, stable people who can deal with incredible amounts of stress with no side affects. In fact they appear to be as emotionless as [[Vulcan|Vulcans]] but like the [[Andorian|Andorians]] who hide their emotions from strangers, the Zaranites seem to conceal their emotional state from other species. In truth due to the masks, protective garments and other cultural differences this is all an illusion. Most species just can not notice or understand the outward signs that would normally reveal their emotional state.

| Zara is the name of their creator/observer. He/she respects perseverance and the will to survive. Once a year the entire species take one day and meditate on the challenges and difficulties that they have had to overcome in their life. During these 29 hours they will not eat, drink, sleep or move from their position for any thing. This one day of worship is also a test of their abilities to survive.

They desired to be isolated in 2366 at first contact with the UFP, as some of its natives were undergoing metamorphosis into non-corporeal creatures. The first sign of a Zalkonian turning into a non-corporeal entity is when they start to exhibit painful isoelectric bursts. Zalkonians are ruled by a repressive government that seeks to destroy all those who exhibit signs of this change. Within four years, at least some natives were involved with the Maquis on Volan III.

All travellers should be warned that the Zetarians are seeking humanoid bodies to inhabit. When they find a physiologically compatible body they will take possession of it.
