Kala Meressa was born and raised on a farm in the Ilvian province of Bajor. Situated on the northern continent, the Ilvian province is known as the bread basket of Bajor. Yoran and Julis, Meressa’s parents, own a small kava farm.
 
Meressa was raised in a close knit, and loving family. She was educated at home by her mother during the Cardassian occupation. Her family holds traditional Bajoran values and beliefs. After liberation she attended a Federation school that had opened in the area. Her parents are strong supporters of Bajoran membership in the Federation, and wanted her to have the best opportunity to succeed. The day Meressa was accepted into Star Fleet Academy was a proud moment for Meressa and her parents.
 
Kala Cashard, Meressa’s brother, fought for the Bajoran resistance. He was captured during a raid on a Cardassian armory. He is officially listed as missing, as the Cardassian’s claim to have released all POWs.
