Ishmael is 1.78m (5'10"), with dark hair and pale complexion. He mostly resembles his Kerelian father as far as facial features go, but he does have his mother’s Al-Leyan tipped ears and blue glowing eyes. Because of those light-sensitive eyes, he always keeps his quarters dimly lit and often wears sunglasses in normal light conditions (the exception being during personal or counselling-related conversations, as he values the importance of eye contact well over his ability to see clearly). His hearing covers the range of 1.5 to 45,000 hertz and he has a singing voice to match, both due to his mixed genealogy.

Ishmael is notably reserved and cautious when he speaks and is through-and-through a perfectionist, sometimes to his own diservice. He enjoys history and music, and always strives to experience and learn more in both subjects. He is also quite passionate about his Al-Leyan heritage, enthralled by the brutalist architecture, rich food, and meticulous attitudes seen on Leya-1. At the same time however, he often feels out of place in Al-Leyan culture and instead values the more liberal outlook he found at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. Unlike his extended family he harbours no resentment towards Klingons, and somewhat admires them for their resolve and (ultimately) positive contributions to Al-Leyan society.

Finally, Ishmael has very conflicting feelings about violence. His father, a member of a notably peaceful race and a diplomat to boot, is a devout pacifist while his mother is a firm believer in standing up for one’s principles and ceaselessly fighting to improve the galaxy.

Personal History

---

Ishmael Aldor was born on Stardate 237006.26 in Chicago, IL on Earth to Isaac and A’el Aldor. Isaac, a Federation Ambassador to Leya-1 of Kerelian descent, met his Al-Leyan mother while stationed on Leya-1. Despite A’el’s initial protests, Ishmael was raised throughout his life by both parents as opposed to spending the traditional initial ten years at the Al-Leyan Haemachuo organization. Because of his father’s occupation, Ishmael spent his early life moving back and forth between Earth, Leya-1, and a handful of starships. Over time he grew much closer to his mother, who was often less busy and more determined to recreate for him an orthodox Al-Leyan upbringing.

At age seventeen, when he could no longer stand changing schools and jobs so often, Ishmael applied to Starfleet Academy and began living on Earth more permanently. During his first few years he frequently switched between different hobbies, passions, and majors, likely due to inheriting his father’s ability to quickly absorb new information but not his mother’s patience. Around his fourth year, his superiors began to notice behavioural patterns consistent with personality disorder, and he was swiftly put in touch with Academy counselors. At first Ishmael detested the idea of going through psychotherapy, but over time he learned to develop a healthy relationship with his emotions, reconcile his internal struggles with culture and belonging, and genuinely connect with his peers. During this time he also began intensely studying psychology and he switched his major accordingly, this time for good. By the end of that year, he was well versed in consciousness, cultural, and behavioural studies with a marked interest in conflict mediation. Finally Ishmael had a clear goal for his future: even if it meant spending an additional two years studying on Earth, he would become a counselor on a starship.
