Background

Evelyn Veir grew up on Betazed in a rural community outside of Ohmallera. Her parents met racing sailboats when her father (originally from the Languedoc region of France, Earth), had recently moved to Betazed to take an engineering job. Veir entered medical training in Ohmallera after her undergraduate studies, completing her studies with a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University on Earth. While on Earth she met her wife, Muireann, through mutual friends. Planning to return to Ohmallera post-fellowship, the couple's plans changed when the city was attacked in 2388 and they instead remained on Earth. Veir joined instead a surgical team at the Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrière in Paris, France, where she found it particularly rewarding to connect with her pediatric patients (and their caregivers) thanks to her empathic abilities. She and Muireann have two daughters, Cerise and Lark.

Resigning from the surgical team after causing a critical and irreversible error during an otherwise routine surgery for an aneurysm, Veir struggled with depression and anxiety. Veir discovered that the setback with her surgical career was due to a neuroinflammatory disorder that affects, among other things, her fine motor skills. While some aspects of her chronic illness are treatable, Veir was informed that she would not regain the physical skills necessary to continue in her original field. The dynamic nature of her disability poses some challenges, but Veir is learning strategies to manage her well-being during flares. After gaining some additional training in emergency and internal medicine, Veir is beginning to trust herself again as a practitioner and hopes to be of use to Starfleet Medical. She is resolute, warm, and analytical.

In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, swimming, and listening to Kasseelian opera. Knitting serves as therapy for both her hands and her mind.
