“They forget what a Romulan can do and never forget that a Romulan never forgets.”

a traditional Romulan saying

Sybil is currently serving as a Science officer aboard the USS Gorkon.

Appearance, Manner, Personality

  • Species: Human
  • Height: 5'6" (167 cm)
  • Weight: 130 lbs (59 kg)
  • Hair: Her light blonde hair is styled in a tightly woven crown braid across the top of her head. The braid is neat and controlled, with every strand meticulously in place, reflecting her disciplined and orderly nature. This elegant, yet practical style gives her a composed and almost regal appearance, fitting for a Starfleet officer with a commitment to precision and professionalism.
  • Length of Hair: short
  • Eyes: Her eyes are a striking blue, wide and expressive, with a slight almond shape. They often glint with curiosity or soften when she's contemplating a complex problem or mission detail.
  • Build: Her build is slim yet athletic, with long limbs and a graceful posture that hints at someone who is comfortable with both physical training and long hours of scientific work in a lab or stellar cartography.
  • Birthmarks: She has a small, faint birthmark on the back of her neck, just beneath her hairline. It's barely noticeable but something she is vaguely aware of.
  • Taste in Clothing (when off duty): She favors the crisp and functional Starfleet uniform, which allows for ease of movement during duty. Off-duty, her style remains simple but elegant, often consisting of sleek, fitted jumpsuits or relaxed, comfortable outfits suited for her quarters. When attending formal events which do not require uniform, she prefers deep jewel tones like emerald green or navy blue.
  • Voice: Her voice is soft, with a calm and melodic quality.
  • Mannerisms: She often fidgets with small objects, like a stylus or a datapad, especially when she feels nervous or unsure. When she's concentrating, she has a habit of biting her lip or shifting her weight from foot to foot, showing a more anxious side to her otherwise composed demeanor. She also tends to speak very carefully, as if she’s always second-guessing herself, though her tone remains polite and earnest. In group settings, she sometimes hesitates before contributing to discussions, waiting for others to speak first, but once she starts, her words are thoughtful and well-considered.
  • Quarters: Her quarters aboard the starship are a blend of personal and familial significance. Though they maintain Starfleet’s practical and efficient design, there are several sentimental touches that reveal her close connection to her family. A few framed holo-images of her parents and siblings rest on a shelf, reminding her of the high expectations and legacy she carries with her. A small, hand-knit blanket—passed down through her family—lays neatly folded on her bed, offering a sense of comfort and home. Despite the warmth of these familial reminders, there’s an underlying sense of restraint in how she decorates. Her desk is always meticulously organized, with datapads and reports stacked in perfect order, as if she’s trying to prove herself through her discipline and hard work. Occasionally, she glances at the holo-images, a mixture of pride and self-doubt on her face, wondering if she’ll ever truly live up to her family’s reputation. Her quarters, while cozy and intimate, reflect the tension she feels between being part of a proud family tradition and her own insecurities about not feeling good enough. In the evenings, she sometimes sits in her chair by the large viewing window, staring out at the stars. The vastness of space both comforts her and reminds her of the daunting responsibilities she carries as a Starfleet officer and as a member of her distinguished family.

Family

Parents:
  Mother: Evelyn Nemes

  • Occupation: Historian and Cultural Anthropologist
  • Description: Evelyn is a dedicated and passionate historian known for her extensive research on ancient Betazoid cultures. With her expressive dark hair often tied back in a neat bun and warm brown eyes that twinkle with enthusiasm, she possesses a nurturing demeanor that encourages her children to explore their interests. Evelyn is supportive of Sybil’s dreams but can be quite intense when it comes to academic achievements, often unintentionally amplifying Sybil’s insecurities about meeting expectations.

Father: Orin Nemes

  • Occupation: Archaeologist and Starfleet Consultant
  • Description: Orin is a charming and adventurous archaeologist who has traveled to many planets in search of lost civilizations. His lighthearted approach to life and deep love for exploration is infectious, making him a beloved figure in Sybil’s life. He has a tall, sturdy build, a shock of silver hair, and bright green eyes, reflecting the adventurous spirit he hopes to instill in his children. Orin is often the one to reassure Sybil that it’s okay to make mistakes, though he can sometimes be oblivious to her deeper anxieties about failure.

Siblings:
  Alaric Nemes

  • Occupation: Starfleet Science Officer
  • Description: Alaric, Sybil’s older brother, is the family’s overachiever, having quickly ascended the ranks in Starfleet due to his sharp tactical mind and strategic skills. With a tall, imposing stature, dark hair, and piercing blue eyes, he carries an air of confidence that often feels intimidating to Sybil. Unlike the rest of the family, Alaric tends to focus on Sybil’s shortcomings, offering pointed critiques of her mistakes and decisions. His well-meaning but harsh comments leave Sybil feeling discouraged and insecure, causing a rift in their relationship. While he sees potential in her, his constant reminders of her failures create a barrier, making Sybil hesitant to reach out for support.

Mirielle Nemes

  • Occupation: Aspiring Starfleet Engineer
  • Description: Mirielle is the family’s creative spirit, pursuing a career in engineering with a focus on designing innovative technology. She has long, curly blonde hair that reflects Sybil’s, and bright green eyes filled with curiosity. Though she shares Sybil’s clumsiness, Mirielle embraces it with humor, often lightening the mood during family gatherings. Her playful nature and ability to laugh at her own mistakes offer Sybil a sense of camaraderie, though she still feels the pressure to keep up with her siblings’ achievements.

Family Dynamics: The Nemes family is deeply bonded by their shared love for exploration and learning, yet they also embody the weight of expectations that often hangs over Sybil. Their home is filled with books, artifacts from various cultures, and memories of adventures, all serving as a reminder of their distinguished legacy. While Evelyn and Orin encourage Sybil to embrace her individuality, they often unknowingly contribute to her feelings of inadequacy. Family gatherings can be a mixture of warmth and tension, with Sybil caught in a whirlwind of love and self-doubt. Alaric’s critical nature looms over her, amplifying her insecurities and making her feel as if she can never measure up. Despite these challenges, the family’s unconditional love shines through, particularly in her relationship with Mirielle, providing Sybil with a safe haven to explore her dreams and navigate her clumsy, endearing journey in Starfleet.

Background

General

Ensign Melik Finley is a 36-year-old Starfleet officer with a reputation for being both a brilliant tactician and a bit of a maverick. He has a knack for thinking outside the box and coming up with unconventional solutions to complex problems, which has earned him both praise and criticism from his superiors. Being the son of a Human father and a Romulan mother, he learnt from both cultures, which were often so hostile to each other. His mother, who had left the Romulan Empire before the Treaty of Algeron in the late 2300’s, finally reached the Federation via detours, where she initially settled on Vulcan. Several years later she met the human scientist John Finley there, who was working on a project with a Vulcan colleague at the Vulcan Scientific Institute. In the year 2365 Melik was born.

CHILDHOOD / YOUNG AGE

The Vulcan Years 2365 - 2375

Melik spent the first ten years of his life on Vulcan. There he learnt some basics about Vulcan philosophy but never really felt at home, because he was not following the Vulcan way of Surak and openly showed his emotions which led to him being shunned by most of his Vulcan peers. His reference persons were therefore only his parents and then his younger sister.

The Earth Years 2375 - 2385

When Melik was 10 years old, his family left Vulcan and moved back to Earth to his father's old home. Melik was quite happy that he could now live in a new environment, where it was easier for him to socialise with his peers. Even here, however, he sometimes encountered doubts or even rejection due to his Romulan heritage, so ironically he sometimes pretended to be an “emotionless” Vulcan to avoid this problem.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

Merchant Marine 2385 - 2396

Melik had always felt the urge to learn more about space and wanted to get "out there". However, he decided against applying to Starfleet Academy, as he was sure that he would be rejected because of his Romulan roots. So he started a career in the Federation Merchant Marine onboard the freighter Lynx. Transporting goods to Federation colonies most of the time, he took over several jobs of the five-member crew. After some time his skipper mostly entrusted him with security tasks and eventually he also became the right hand of his skipper. In his sparse free time, he read a lot and particularly wanted to learn more about his Romulan heritage. He was fascinated by Romulan culture and tradition, so he learnt to appreciate this side of his heritage more. From now on, he also stopped pretending to be Vulcan and embraced his heritage. Furthermore, he only used his first name Melik from that time on. Instead of playing the “emotionless Vulcan”, he uses humour as a defence mechanism, often deflecting personal questions or uncomfortable situations with a well-timed joke. He often pretends that things don't really affect him inwardly and that he doesn't care, even if the opposite is the case. Melik doesn't want to let anything show on the outside. However, this did not prevent him from often being met with rejection and mistrust. Time and again, he himself is unsure of where he even belongs. To cope with these feelings, Melik has to fight an unhealthy temptation to use alcohol as a means of escapism. His tendency to drown his problems in the bottle has only exacerbated his struggles, even leading to a strained relationship with his skipper a growing sense of isolation. Despite his rough skin, Melik is fiercely loyal to his crewmates and would do anything to protect them. He has a strong moral compass and a sense of justice that drives him to stand up for what he believes is right, even if it sometimes means going against the grain. He is known for his bravery, resourcefulness and unwavering dedication to duty. Underneath his tough exterior, Melik is also a deeply compassionate and caring individual, often willing to act as a mentor and confidant to younger crewmembers.

Joining Starfleet 2397

The longer he served on the freighter Lynx, the greater his desire grew to not just transport goods to distant planets, but also to learn more about these planets and explore them. He therefore decided to give Starfleet a try and apply, which he finally did in 2396. Despite his experience and older age, he must now find a way to overcome the challenges of serving as a junior officer while coming to terms with his own limitations and mistakes.

Sheathed Sword 2391
USS Gemini
Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Melik Finley) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.

Genesis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
We give the Genesis Award to those officers who make a sincere and noticeable effort to improve their simming skills. Mick has definitely done so in the time he’s been with us! He’s sought advice on a variety of topics, taking guidance to heart and always striving to make his sims engaging and his characters interesting. We’re seeing him go from strength to strength, and so we’re delighted to present him with the Genesis Award.
Awards Special Xalor 2011.jpg
Xalor Clan Xifilis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
Presented by Quinn Reynolds I’m delighted to present this award to Mick, the person behind Lina Dahlquist [now Melik Finley]. He is one of our many writers for whom English is a second language; something many of the Gorkon crew didn’t realise until recently! He doesn’t just use English, but does so in a way which communicates the vibrancy of his character; her hopes, dreams, struggles, and disappointments. It’s a testament to an ongoing dedication to his writing craft, and I’m very proud to recognise his ability to overcome the language barrier to create such engaging sims.
