Background

Atan was born on Castor III, a moderately developed colony world. Moderately developed in that there were only about 50,000 colonists when Atan was born. They had standard Federation technology and were fully involved in the interstellar ‘community,’ but still close enough to its colonial roots to still have more than a bit of wilderness. His father was a teacher in the upper school and coached several of the athletic teams. His mother was a doctor at the planet’s only large medical facility.

When he was 10, his father took Atan and his older brother on a two week camping trip. Their younger brother stayed at home with their mother to attend a music ‘camp’. A few days into the trip, their mother contacted them to tell them to stay at their camp. A virus had either mutated or interacted with something native, and it was racing through the colony.

Their father tried keeping things as normal as possible. Both Sitah and Atan were on the swim team their father coached, and Atan was also an avid diver. Their remote campsite was near a cove with some small cliffs. They’d brought a small camp replicator with them for water and a few basic foods, so the boys saw it as some kind of extended holiday at first. Near the end of the second week, they lost contact with their mother. It was almost a week later before the Starfleet ship that had responded had been able to synthesize a vaccine and they could return home.

When they did, they found their mother and younger brother, Imis, had both died from the virus. They all fell apart for a short time, but found strength enough in each other to come back from the loss.

This all served to solidify Atan’s desire to become a doctor, like his mother. He wanted to have a role in making sure this didn’t happen to others. He refocused on his studies, continued his training with his father, and even learned to play piano like his brother Imis had been doing. He was determined to make himself an excellent candidate for Starfleet Academy. It worked. He left Castor shortly before his 19th birthday, headed to San Francisco.

Atan had worked through most of the trauma of his mother’s death by the time he arrived at the Academy. In addition to his classes, Atan joined the dive team, took time to explore Earth, made friends, and even tried dating. He was still an exceptionally studious cadet, but he was learning to relax and let go of some of his stress.

SF Medical was intense, even after the intensity of the Academy. One of the best parts of his classwork, in his opinion, was the specialized training he received with the other telepaths and empaths there to use those abilities when treating people. He’d always had a relatively strong telepathic ability, but these special sessions really took him to a different level. Growing up on a colony world, he hadn’t had the same level of access to training he might have had on Betazed. By his third year at SF Medical, any deficits he might have had were gone.

Atan credits the friendships he made at the Academy for helping him get through med school psychologically. They helped him start to focus a bit less on saving lives and a bit more on the lives he was training to save. He even started a relationship his last year at SF Medical. Kasper was two years behind Atan. He was a human from Earth, a city called Oslo. His lightheartedness and spontaneity were the perfect balance to Atan’s serious and deliberate nature. After a year together, they both had taken on some characteristics of the other. With Atan’s cadet cruise looming, followed by a probable ship posting, they mutually decided to end their relationship. If they ended up somewhere together in the future, Atan thought they might give a long-term relationship a chance, but now wasn’t the time for either of them.

Atan left for his cadet cruise feeling he now had a better, more sustainable balance in his work and life, but only time would tell.
