Psychology
Tertius has had issues fitting in both back home on Magna Roma, and in the wider Federation. While he grew up mostly in the wider Federation he was presented with an idealized picture of Magna Roma by his parents. This leads to a sometimes volatile mixture of superiority and inferiority complexes, especially in connection with the prominent role Terra has in interstellar society. He feels generally more at ease when dealing with non-humans than with humans or other Magna Romans (who are genetically nearly identical to baseline humans)
Interests
Due to his parents' profession and his own experience during his childhood he has become quite proficient in comparative ethnology. As an outgrowth of this he enjoys sampling and preparing food from various cultures. He can be quite indulgent in this.
Background
Tertius Luca was born 25 years ago to parents of Magna Roman ancestry. Both his parents at that time were scientists (ethnologists) on the Federation vessel Shun’va. The vessel at this time was tasked in survey duties in the rimwards areas of Federation space, and Tertius was both conceived and born on the vessel.
Tertius spent most of his childhood away from his nominal home planet, and therefore was mostly subject to the traditions and culture of Magna Roma through his parents. He developed a rather idealized picture of the place, before coming to live there in his teenage years. He did not like it once he was there.
The Magna Roma of today is a member of the Federation, and tries to strive for the values of the Federation, but is not always successful in it. While technically equal and free, the old caste lines between free citizens and slaves that were present before acceptance into the Federation still are evident. The place is rife with nepotism and jingoism. For Tertius, who grew up in a multicultural environment far from the hotspots of conflict the Federation encountered the last few decades (he spent prolonged time on 7 different planets, including Earth for a short teaching assignment of his parents to Milan University when he was 12) this left a bad taste in his mouth.
After finishing his studies he decided to join Starfleet, and not as a member of the Roman contigent that was used for crewing the ships of Magna Roma herself, but as a regular member of Starfleet.
