"Veni, Vidi, Vici. (I came, I saw, I conquered.)"
a Magna Roman expression.
The Magna Roman are a species of humanoids almost identical to humans who developed in such a way as to perfectly mirror the Roman Empire on Earth. This is one of the best examples of Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development.

Magna Romans are also referred to as Magni Romani.

History

This planet was cited as evidence of Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development. An almost exact copy, a parallel of the Roman Empire on Earth had developed here. The English language had evolved here and was the most common language followed by Latin and then to lesser degrees over a dozen other European languages as well.

Since then new evidence has been discovered that would seem to indicate that there is the possibility that the Magna Romans and the other cultures found on the planet were actually transplanted to this world from Earth by a species called the Preservers. All of these cultures may have come from the area of Earth known as Europe and were scattered all over the planet.

As on Earth the Roman Empire started out as a small independent nation that became a military, intellectual and economic power. They quickly expanded, conquering their neighbors. Over time these provinces became full-fledged members of the Roman Empire as their borders were continually being pushed farther and farther.

In time they had expanded to the point where the entire world was under their power. However many of the newer provinces would occasionally rise up in rebellion, which would result in the Roman Legions stepping in and making an example of the ring leaders.

In order to prevent this the Roman government instigates a series of radical reforms that over the centuries resulted in every citizen, provincial occupant and even slaves to received rights to medicine and government payments in their old age. As a result the Empire eventually managed to put a stop to all rebellions and even wars for 400 years. This achieved their goal of achieving stability in the Empire.

By the mid-23rd century, the planet had reached the development of Earth's 20th century. Technology included radio communications, advanced road systems and powered transportation (such as the Jupiter 8), but no atomic power. Gladiator games were now being televised.

In 2262, the Federation class 4 stardrive survey vessel SS Beagle was badly damaged by a meteor in the system and a landing party beamed down to obtain iridium ore for repairs. The party was met by the locals, led by Proconsul Claudius Marcus who considered it potentially ruinous to his highly conservative society if word of its existence should be carried elsewhere; the officers were regarded as captured barbarians and forced to fight as gladiators. The Captain R.M. Merik however became First Citizen.

Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise visited the planet 892-IV six years later in 2268 after investigating the debris of the Beagle. They were held captives both by fugitives and later the proconsul, and Merik. The Enterprise crew managed to escape and speculated that the new religion might bring the transformation of the Empire, much like Christianity did to the Roman Empire on Earth.

By the mid-24th century, Magna Roma had become a member of the United Federation of Planets and soon after a surprisingly large number of their citizens enlisted in the Marine Core and Starfleet.

They have been firm supporters of the Federation and are one of the very few members of the Federation to be allowed to supply the entire crew for a Starfleet vessel. The very first one was the Constitution-class USS Farragut which was decommissioned and then given to Magna Romans who renamed it the USS Centurion. They have done so for a number of ships over the years.

Government

Currently the Republic of Magna Roma is the ruling government which is led by the Senate. Many of their government positions have the same name and function as those held on Earth during its Roman Republic however some of them do not have corresponding or similar positions either.

Their world is politically subdivided into a number of provinces, each with a governor who is appointed by the Roman Senate. That governor in many cases has a senate or similar body of elite citizens who advise and assist in the governing of the province. However all provinces operate under the supervision of the main government which is in the capitol, the mega city of Rome.

Considering their history and the importance of military service it is no wonder that no one can hold down any government position regardless of how important or unimportant it may be unless they have also served 10 year in the military. In the past that would have meant the Roman Legions but now days it means either Starfleet or the Marine Corp.

Description

They appear to be typical humans with the same kind of variety in height, weight, eye and hair color as well as body types as that found among the Caucasian population on Earth. However they tend to wear a lot of robes and other garments that are very similar to those found in ancient Rome on Earth.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

Since their species seems to be an almost exact copy both physically and culturally of those found in Europe originally on Earth before 250 BC it is not surprising that they have all of the same mental illnesses and mental problems that the human species suffers from.

Religion

The Romans believed in a pantheon of gods, but a nascent movement known as Children of the Son, a parallel to Christianity on Earth, started to be embraced by gladiators, slaves and even Senators, disrupting the stability of the conservative Empire.

Now this movement is in the majority and over 71% of the total population seems to be firm believers. However the belief in both the Roman pantheon of gods and a number of barbarian pantheons still survives among the rest of the population.

Mythology

As one would expect with more than a dozen different pantheons of gods and the rise of the relatively new Children of the Son there are literally thousands upon thousands of tales, fables, myths and legends regarding the different gods, demi-gods, prophets, heroes and cultures found on this world.

Society

Over 1/3rd of their entire world’s population are considered to be Romans. Another 1/3rd have full roman citizenship regardless of the province and cultural background that they come from and the rest while not being considered roman citizens have numerous rights and privileges that ensure that their lives are almost as good and well provided for as full citizens.

All cities and communities are well laid out with numerous and plentiful infrastructures such as education, hospitals, power, transportation, recreational facilities and water. Green spaces such as parks, gardens and nature enclaves are everywhere and available to everyone.

Culture

The Magna Romans have a deep appreciation for all forms of artistic expression. Music, sculptures, mosaics and numerous other forms can be found just about everywhere and since becoming members of the Federation that have found and imported new types of art that can now be enjoyed by the general population.

However one thing that they all seem to enjoy, either in person or televised from the Capitol Arena are the gladiatorial combats fought out now days not by slaves but by convicts.

Customs

All of the people love to see the games which are televised from the capitol arena in the city of Rome. Here any and all citizens who have been convicted of a major crime anywhere on the planet, regardless of what it is face justice as a gladiator. They are sentenced to participate in a certain number of matches and if they survive then they are granted their freedom. If they fail, they die.

Technology

They probably have one of the lowest technological levels of achievement with in the Federation and while they do have a strong educational system and numerous research facilities their best and brightest prefer to seek glory by joining Starfleet. That being said they are not that far behind the other species with in the Federation and this is mostly due to free trade and the exchange of technological knowledge among most Federation members.

Economy

Since becoming a member of the Federation they have managed to establish a very strong economy by the numerous trade deals they have managed to negotiate and maintain. They have an excellent reputation for fair dealing and go out of their way to ensure that nothing happens to tarnish that reputation.

Military

They never had a military space fleet but did have an extremely strong planet bound military force. After they joined the Federation a surprisingly large number of their citizens joined Starfleet and the Marines.

As a result when the Constitution-class USS Farragut was decommissioned, it was given to Magna Roma, and renamed the USS Centurion. Since then another 4 vessels and one entire marine core division have been staffed completely by them.

Since then the USS Centurion has been decommissioned and turned into a floating museum and training facility by the Magna Romans. All prospective applicants to Starfleet Academy get run through a 3 month instruction period on the ship to better prepare them for the Academy.

Two of their ships were part of the fleet that was destroyed in the Battle of Wolf 248 by the Borg.

Another one was destroyed during the Dominion War when it refused to retreat before superior numbers. It was able to hold off three Jem’Hadar and one Cardassian warship long enough to allow a Federation troop transport to finish loading the colonists from Ambidir III. In the final moments of the battle the doomed vessel crashing into one of the Jem’Hadar ships destroying it as well.

The Magna Roman Marine Corp Division saw active service during the Dominion War and fought in a number of engagements both with the Klingons and other Federation service personnel and Marine Core soldiers.

Currently they provide the entire crew for 4 vessels with in Starfleet with more of their people scattered throughout the fleet.

There are only 4 species that provide more soldiers to the Federation Marine Corp than the Magna Romans and as a result of their heroic service during the Dominion War there has been some serious consideration given to the possibility of forming a new unit to be called the 2nd Magna Roman Marine Corp Division.

Federation Intelligence Files

The culture of Magna Roma was considered a prime example of Hodgkin’s Law of Parallel Planetary Development. They had developed as an analog of Earth’s Roman Empire and Jesus Christ about 2300 years after those events transpired on Earth. When the USS Enterprise visited them in 2268 the Roman Empire had yet to fall and a nascent Christianity was only beginning to flourish in their early modern age of television.

Following first contact with the USS Enterprise the old Magna Roman Empire transformed rapidly into the republic. The republic was eventually able to join the United Federation of Planets.

Magna Roman society mirrored that of Earth's Roman Empire and was, in the 2360s, governed by the Republic of Magna Roma. Prior to the USS Enterprise's visit to Magna Roman, the planet was under the control of the Magna Roman Empire. The Magna Romans valued honor, glory and was based on a warrior culture.

It was later theorized that the planet was populated by the descendants of Earth Romans that were placed on Magna Roma by the Preservers.

By the mid-24th century, Magna Roma had become a member of the United Federation of Planets. When the Constitution-class USS Farragut was decommissioned, it was given to Magna Roma, and renamed the USS Centurion.

Circa 2259 of the alternate reality created by the Narada's temporal incursion, the USS Enterprise participated in a mission to this world. The mission there earned Montgomery Scott a Special Commendation.

An extremely popular Magna Roman condiment is Garum which is brewed from fish stock and spices.

892-IV (Magna Roma) has several oceans and at least three continents. It was politically subdivided into a number of provinces with the capitol being the mega city of Rome.
