MISSION OF MERCY

Stardates

240002.04 to 240004.08

Synopsis

Responding to the health problems discovered on their last mission, the Astraeus travels to Lanaxa in efforts to continue to treat and rid the lower class of their infection only to learn that it has now spread to the upper class as well. The situation worsens when the away team is captured by desperate members of the lower class and the Astraeus crew works to free them and save lives before it's too late.

LOCATIONS

Lanaxa

Lanaxa is the capital of House Lanaxa, one of the numerous Caraadian Houses in the Par'tha Expanse. As with other houses, the population is separated into the upper class (nobles) and the lower class (Seirbhiseach). The planet's diverse economy has been a stabilizing force with enough agricultural products being produced that the population has no issues sustaining itself and then some. Excess product is exported to Par'tha sector markets for a mild profit. The planet relies heavily on its lower-class population to work the fertile valleys and plains to keep the economy strong.

Act One

Summary

The Astraeus arrives in orbit over Lanaxa and they are welcomed back by Councilor Neletti Bolro, (played by April). Once permission is gained, the medical team beams down to a hospital where they find only those infected in the upper class waiting to be treated. At the insistence of those in the upper class, they need to be treated before the medical team can be escorted to deal with those in the lower class. Upon arriving and seeing again how the lower class is being treated, Elizabeth reaches out to Mei’konda with a proposal. Asking him if he would be willing to talk with someone about changing a few things to give the lower class access to better accommodations, resources, and medical care to eliminate infections in the future. Maybe inviting them up and talking about the Neutron Star to get them talking. Overhearing this conversation, Mabian Uzoncourt approaches the group and joins the conversation.

She agrees with Elizabeth’s recommendation to send a science team to locate the source of the infection. Elizabeth recommends that it would be safer to have a delegation come to the ship rather than risk infection with another away team and that she would be happy to screen those who would be visiting before they beam up to insure they aren’t infected. Mei extends an invitation to Uzoncourt, the head of the house, and Neletti Bolro to come aboard the ship to talk about a few things. They hesitantly agree to the offer and are screened, cleared, and beam up. The medical team sets up to begin treating the infected.

Meanwhile, Mei sends a second team to find the source of the infection. With permission, the science team beams down to the rundown living quarters of the lower class and begins their investigation.

Talks begin on the ship, while on the planet, the medical team is puzzled after running tests, as to how the infection has begun to spread to the upper class since the infection doesn’t appear to be spread in any of the normal ways, unless the two classes were drinking after or kissing each other, which they didn’t feel was the case. Each member infected is showing the same symptoms as what they had discovered in the lower class upon their previous visit, fever and inability to draw nutrients from the foods they had eaten. After doing what they can so far for the upper class, the medical team is escorted to where the lower-class infected are being kept. As they enter the guarded area, they can see it’s a small camp with few inadequate facilities. They are brought inside a bunkhouse in the camp with beds where those very sick are laid awaiting treatment along with. They set up and begin with the sickest of the infected.

As talks continue, Mei brings up the sensitive subject about making better accommodations and allowing the lower class to have access to better resources, medical treatment, etc. If only to keep them healthier. The Lanaxans listen to the proposal and turn their nose up at the idea of such a thing and are stuck in their ways. The talks continue where there is an eventual recess.

Act Two

Summary

The teams check in with each other and it is brought up that the infection can only be spread by coming into contact with the source or saliva of the infected. The science team can have an idea of what is causing the infections and run their tests and do what they do and work to come up with a solution. Now that the medical team knows more about how the infection started in the first place, they come up with a plan to create a cure only to hit as snag as those individuals infected in the lower-class refuse to let a cure become reality. They pull weapons and have the medical away team surrender weapons and their combadges, knowing that if they have the away team, then the guards won’t be able to do anything without risking lives of innocents.

Talks resume and Mei begins to make progress with his stubborn visitors. Jurog Ka'ala hands Elizabeth her combadge and tells her to get in contact with her ship and that he wants to talk with those of the upper class. If they refuse to listen more will become infected. Elizabeth reaches out to Mei with the message and the conference is interrupted. Mei learns that it is the servants of Lanaxa that are the reason behind the spread of the infection and that they’re doing so in hopes that things will change. Both landing teams are attacked and taken hostage by groups of Seirbhiseach, led by a Caraadian named Pro’jet.

Act Three

Summary

No longer willing to risk the away teams’ lives once Dr. Snow is directly threatened, Mei’konda orders Uzoncourt and Bolro to the Bridge while he and Serala proceed to one of the Astraeus’ transporter rooms to join an assault team who intends to beam down and put a stop to Pro’jet’s hostage situation.

Once talks begin and the military backs off, the medical team is given their badges back and allowed to begin working on a cure. But the teams are still unpermitted to finish their tasks until an agreement has been reached. As the science team is twiddling their thumbs, several of the members of the uninfected lower class begin sneaking the source out in the event that the talks fail. The team attempts to deter them to stop to no avail. Noa has no choice but to call in some guards to keep the lower class from accessing the infection source. As that happens the medical team is once again called to the hospital where more of the upper class have fallen victim to the infection.

Eventually, they reach an agreement and the teams are allowed to finish what they started. The medical team perfects a cure for the infection and begins to treat the infected as the science team works to fix the problem at the source while things on Lanaxa start to change.
