Starfleet

Quentin Collins

Quentin Collins, Lieutenant Commander when Keneth first met him, is currently his first officer. The first interaction between the two officers was during the away mission to the Arrow, when he was assigned to the commander's team. Collins has been instrumental to Keneth in stabilizing his entry into Starfleet.

They spoke for the first time when he asked Keneth to find the weakness in the armor of a boarder on board the Arrow. Later, after a traumatizing experience involving a explosion, Collins helped him regain his feet and keep going. That moment of strength has stuck with Keneth to this day and keeps him confident in every situation, including ones where he objectively should not be confident.

Randal Shayne

Randal Shayne, commander when Keneth first met him, was his captain aboard the USS Arrow. The two had minimal interaction on board the Juneau, but served together briefly on board the Arrow as they returned to Starbase 821.

During that shore leave, Keneth had a meeting with him in which they discussed his plans and feelings about his Starfleet career. Keneth credits Shayne as having been the first one to actually force him to consider what his future would be. Near the end of that conversation he mentioned that he would like to work toward command and Shayne agreed to support him, contingent on his own effort.

Regan Wilde

Regan Wilde, Ensign when Keneth first met him, is currently a security officer aboard the USS Arrow. The two did not interact much in the beginning, especially as their jobs were in separate areas. Keneth joined Wilde impromptu for a survey of the surface of Theta 122, where the two talked about various topics on their hour long journey. Wilde has previously expressed misgivings over Keneth's ability to cook, which Keneth will never publicly endorse. He lost an eye shortly before Keneth's leave of absence.

History

Childhood

Keneth was born on Stardate 237402.18 at the Chicago Medical Center.

His father, David, was a researcher at the University of Chicago. His mother was a botanist from Canada. Somehow, his parents claimed, it had been an instant match.

From a young age, he had displayed a lot of interest in mathematics and his father had correspondingly taught him logical reasoning too – an experiment that failed miserably on his sister. But Keneth did learn – and that had become a defining trait for him – he could be incredibly rational and reason anything out. Or at least so he thought.

When he was three, the family moved to Mumbai, partially at his mother’s insistence and partially because his father had received a research opportunity there. It was there that Keneth realized that the majority of Earth really was identical, global culture was a real thing and that he would never find real diversity on Earth. It had been sacrificed for peace. Later, at twelve, they moved back to Chicago.

As he moved through high school, he grew bored of staring at the stars from a distance, calculating their lives to 128-bit triple point accuracy. He wanted to be near them, to feel the wonder of a discovery. He wanted to explore and a planet was too constraining. He wanted to meet people who were actually different. So he applied to Starfleet.

His family did not trust this to work – Starfleet had so low an acceptance rate it may as well be zero. He should just enlist they said, or better yet, study on planet – maybe join his father? Keneth almost started believing it. Then he was accepted. He had only one disappointment – he had wanted science, but he got engineering. He decided against switching majors later and instead minored in science.

Academy Years

The one notable feature of his academy time is his insistence on performing research. This lead to him forming a close relationship with Doctor Quinell Winslett, a propulsion researcher and one of his professors. He co-published a paper in his second year with the professor regarding transwarp fields, which began his love for propulsion. He later published papers on computation and a single study on navigational algorithms during a summer internship at the Daystrom Institute. His final year he published his thesis and a seemingly widely acclaimed paper on the effectiveness of key lime pie as ship based weaponry using transporter fields.

He graduated on stardate 239705.25 and was posted to the USS Juneau upon the completion of his training cruise on 239706.01.

Prologue, USS Arrow (239706.22 - 239707.12)

Keneth's first mission went off to an interesting start. He was initially assigned to the USS Juneau, to which he reported right out of the academy. After some introductions, he began work in engineering, helping with efforts to secure the bio-neural gelpacks onboard from damage due to Eichner radiation they were going to encounter.

Very quickly, however, before any significant discussion took place, he was called down to the shuttlebay to join the away team heading to investigate and regain control of the USS Arrow. It was here that he first met many of his future crewmates aboard the shuttle on the way to the derelict ship.

As they arrived at the vessel, they quickly divided into two teams - one heading down to engineering and the other up to the bridge. He was assigned to the bridge team, headed by Lieutenant Commander Collins. As they embarked, they had to rapidly replan as they encountered several members of the species entitled 'The People'. Some quick thinking led Keneth to conclude that the weak point on their armor was a strip of black terminals along the sides of their suits. Using this information, the officers subdued the first creature. Unfortunately, they spent too much power in the process, leaving Keneth no choice but to fire on the nearest plasma conduit, ionizing the whole compartment in an explosion of sorts, thus incapacitating the second intruder.

The immediate aftermath of this was a nervous breakdown, unable to handle the emotions of terror and confusion that he'd just received. After being calmed down by Commander Collins, the team carried on to the bridge. Later he would feel quite silly about the way he reacted. As they entered the bridge and fortified their position, a string of repairs led to a new problem cropping up - thermal overload. Quick work by Warrant Office Kingsley averted death by using the heat to blow up a missile instead.

As the Arrow set off towards Starbase 821, Keneth and Ensign Sasaki were assigned to get the warp drive back online and fix the laundry list of issues aboard. Though sleep deprived, he began work, with a quick patch bringing the warp engines back online. But shortly after, Ensign Sasaki noticed a small bug-like device skittering around in engineering. A brief operation by Keneth and two crewmen succeeded in capturing the creatures.

In the course of investigation, he plugged the device into the computer to see what he could glean. However, having followed improper procedure, he accidentally exposed the device to the computer core, resulting in it sending random commands to the machine. This led to the ship accelerating rapidly to high warp factors, something unsustainable for the ship's current state.

Rapidly realizing what had happened, Keneth unplugged the device. However this action effectively 'killed' it leaving him feeling great remorse at what had occurred. Though he later admitted that the creature was technically an enemy combatant at that point in time, he maintains that it was his negligence that caused the whole fiasco, from the death of the creature to the near-destruction of the ship from the sudden acceleration. It has made him far more cautious of what he did with alien hardware, especially when the consequences were entirely unknown.

Shore Leave, Starbase 821 (239707.12 - 239707.22)

Soon after arriving at Starbase 821, he had a conversation with Commander Shayne. In it, he talked about his past on Earth, his motivations at the academy and reasoned through how his expectations and desires had changed because of the recent ordeal. He ended up firming up his goals and taking a definitive stance that he wanted to work towards command, though he was still unsure of where the path would take him. Re-enforced by a desire to move on, improve himself and get over his lingering guilt from the death of the arachnid creature, he entered his new permanent posting aboard the Arrow with greater gusto as the ship moved in to the Alpha Isles preparing to investigate the sudden appearance of millions of distress signals and deal with the implications of such a mystery.

Evading Mist, USS Arrow (239707.22 - 239708.31)

This mission was a complex one for Keneth. Early on, he was enlisted by the science department to help secure the biomechanical creature from escape. This led to him butting heads with Ensign Zicv, who disagreed with his more violent approach. While he had his doubts about the effectiveness of Jana's proposed solution, he went along with it, a fact that would torment him later. As they proceeded towards the Alpha Isles, he found himself with little to do and ended up having idle conversation with the Mission Specialist - a stoic Brikar by the name of Eerie. This changed rapidly however as the warp core got stuck as they tried to run from the Sheliak. He quickly proceeded to the bridge to debug the problem, which turned out to be some sort of malicious code in the system.

It was quickly decided that the best way to repair the system would be to restart the computers entirely. This posed a significant engineering problem, especially as they were rapidly approaching a singularity and needed automated helm control back online. In a stroke of inspiration, Keneth realized that he could use the ambient microwave radiation of the anomaly to power the system back on. Unfortunately, this ended up being insufficient in practice and he was forced to reset the system instead - loading the original twenty four year old software onto the ship.As they continued to Atlas Base, he made several of his concerns about their situation known to the Bridge Crew, including the implausibility of their situation and several incompatible aspects of what had just happened.

Reaching Theta 122, he along with the rest of the crew began a much needed shore leave and a an uphill battle with the never ending list of repairs.

Shore Leave, Atlas Base (239708.31 - 239710.09)

Shore leave started out unexpectedly, with Keneth being dragged into teaching a cooking class, despite knowing nothing about the art. Other than his culinary escapades, he also spent significant amounts of time on repair work, crawling through shafts alone. He also faced his reckoning with his feelings since last mission. In a massive boil over he collapsed in his quarters, wondering if Thompson dying was really his negligence, and whether he should have overridden the science officer and have installed a lethal failsafe for the spider. He ended up talking to his sister Riley for the first time in a while. While she does pacify him, he realizes that it would be a long time before he fully recovers, quoting 'God may forgive a man, but his nervous system won't.' to sum up his feelings. He also finds that he has forgotten his late brother's birthday for the first time in years. Riley warns him not to lose sight of what's important before hanging up and leaving him to his thoughts.

By the next day, his feelings have crustified and he has begun actively avoiding the science department, a feat considering it is right next to his quarters. Later, he joins Ensign Regan Wilde for a planetary survey, in which the two talk and Keneth begins to feel less alone again. They also find the first signs of peculiarities on the surface, including some sort of water system.

In the awards ceremony on Atlas Base, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and received a commendation, something he was not expecting. While he, like seemingly every other officer, questions whether he deserves the promotion, he accepts the fact there will never be a perfect time.

Overall, as shore leave ended and the crew began a new mission, he was feeling a lot more stable, even if he wasn't as happy as before. He is still uncomfortable near Science Officers and the corresponding department, but he feels much more integrated with the crew and hopeful for the future.

A Scouring of Stars, USS Arrow (239710.09 - 239801.08)

As the Sheliak approach Theta 122, the race is on the figure out what is going on with the base on the surface, Atlas base. The mission ends with stalemate and a rough alliance with the flotilla of ships surrounding the planet. It is then that Keneth abruptly takes a leave of absence, just as shore leave begins and shortly after his father gets diagnosed with a terminal illness. Little love is lost between the two, but he did take shore leave for a reason ...

Training Cruise 2: Here We Go Again, USS Centris-A (239811.15 - 239811.21)

On stardate 239811.15, around eleven months after he left active service, Keneth returns to Starfleet. Due to his extended absence he is required to redo his training cruise aboard the USS Centris-A before reassignment. Keneth comes back a changed, more sarcastic person with a hint of overconfidence. It remains to be seen where he goes after graduation. It should be noted that Keneth decided that life is too short and completed a top level piloting certification that terrified his sister during his absence. Entering the holodeck for the final exam, it feels good to be back!

Endless Night, USS Arrow (239811.21 - 239901.01)

The Arrow crew had been stranded on the Midnight Planet, a strange place with nights that stretch for weeks, violent flora and fauna, no communications and lost crewmembers. Keneth helps the recently arrived Lieutenant Sheppard get medical assistance, before joining Commander MacKenna with repairing the communication equipment. In the end, the lifeforms on the planet, wonderful in their own way, help the crew get back to the ship safe and sound, with one exception. Amanda Crossley died a hero.

Shore Leave, Casperia Prime (239901.01 - 239902.10)

The crew is back on shore leave after the Nightmare Planet and Keneth spends several days in repairs, half sulking. Eventually, First Officer Maz Rodan has an intriguing conversation about tea, habits and how Keneth really should go down to the planet.

Upon arriving on Casperia Prime, Keneth heads to one of the strange establishments and asks for a drink, only to be told that the local Starfleet officers had been causing trouble. Affronted, he asks the bartender who these officers were, only to find out it was this ever divisive Patrick. Hauling the drunk crewman out, he heads abck to the ship, only to be stopped by marine Vincent Jones.

A quick conversation later, they head to prepare the barbecue Captain Shayne had asked him to take point on. Quickly, Patrick becomes a liability as they try to gain access to their foodstuffs, only to have the crewman begin insulting the dockmaster's family members. With some quick thinking from Jones, they make it out, though Keneth is quite disgruntled that he couldn't deal with the situation on his own.

They end the night with the barbecue finally going and talking to the others as they wait for the Awards ceremony to begin.

Back on the ship, Keneth has a long discussion with new engineering officer Connor Dewitt about himself and the ship. They become well acquainted and Keneth is hopeful to have formed a friendship. The next day they both meet with Chief Thaon Brom and help him with the search for Commander Rodan's pet millipede, which has begun wrecking havoc on the ship's systems.

Overall Keneth feels a lot more relaxed and in line with the crew as they prepare to meet their latest mission head on!
